"December Play" | Do Work / OIFC | 12/17/13

While poor Capt. Rickey stays at the coast of N.C. holding down the OIFC with other members of the crew, Capts. Brant, Barrett & Amy headed off to Fla. to pick up the new Yellowfin, Miss Amanda is in the Bahamas with her brother Noah and family, and Capt. Derek Treffinger along with OIFC 1st Mate Ben Morris are in Fla. red drum fishing.  We  I was on the water with Capt. Roger and we ran up on Robbie Roberts trying out new props on his twin 150 Mercs mounted to his 23 ft. Contender.  It was beautiful on the ICW and the ocean was slick flat.  It's not a bad life.

Don't forget the Captain Rickey's Annual Specktacular Tournament the Saturday after Christmas.  Capts. "meeting" will be in the parking lot of the OIFC Friday night the 29th and "feed" at Clay Morphes' house Saturday night.

"Bluefin Hype" | OIFC | 12/14/13

I just happened to notice my calendar today read December 14th.  Why is this siginificant in our fishing world?  Well, I'm not usually the one to start the speculation and hype that surrounds the giant bluefin tuna fishery in our area so I'll just stick to facts and let yall decide.  It's true over the last few years the bluefin have not shown up in good numbers off our coast like they did in the mid 2000's.  However, every year multiple reports come in of "sightings" from net boats, airplanes, or fishermen heading to the Gulf Stream.  This year is no exception as rumors began at the end of November of giant bluefin harrassing the whiting netters off Topsail Beach.  To my knowledge, there has not been a confirmed bluefin hookup this year off our coast but if it's going to happen the time is now.  History says that from December 15th to January 15th is the peak time when the bluefin would normally show up in our waters.  There has been very little effort to find the bluefins in the last couple years which is likely one reason they haven't been located.  This could be the year.  You never know.  So, if you're headed offshore over the next month keep your eyes open and your guns cocked.  Carry a pack or two of horse ballyhoo, a couple 50 wides and a strong back just in case you stumble across paydirt.  In year's past the bluefin would typically be found within a 10 mile perimeter of Frying Pan shoals but truthfully they can be anywhere.  We've seen them in water 10 feet deep to 3000 feet deep.  One variable will always be consistent, where there is tuna there will be bait and sometimes vice versa.  If you see big bait marks out there this time of year it's a reasonable bet there could be tuna nearby.  So, the time is right and now we just need somebody to be a hero.  A fun trip this time of year is to leave early, troll for bluefin for a couple hours near the shoals and then depending on what you are seeing, either catch giant tunas or run another 30 miles offshore and catch wahoos.  If anyone wants to give this a try and needs more information, come by the Fishing Center and we'll happily tell you everything we know.  Getting the bluefin madness cranked up again around here sure makes for an exciting winter.

Here a few pics from the glory days of bluefinning out of OIFC

Look for group of Gannets diving. If you see them diving, that means a large fish has schooled up bait so gannets can catch them by diving on them. More gannets more bait schooled up, more bait schooled up, more likely Bluefin. If you see 10+ gannets diving together, very good chance that is Bluefin that has schooled up the bait. Let us know if you see that on the water.

"A Cold Day On The Water...." | Do Work / OIFC | 12/13/13

I think what the OIFC's Amanda said was a cold day on the water is better than a cold day on land..Anyway, Amanda, Capt. Roger Gales & I decided we'd had enough of the dry land and needed some time on the water.  Roger is home for a couple weeks before he heads back to the tug so we took his 23 ft. Contender and messed around on the Intracoastal.  We caught skate, Roger showed Amanda how to hold it without hetting stung, some small black drum. a very small flounder and a toad fish.  Above all. Amanda showed the guys she's not too sissy to go out and fish in the cold.  A big thanks to my good friend and former OIFC Captain Roger for taking us out and teaching Amanda manny great lesssons.  Anytime I am on the water with Roger I learn also.

"Cy's World Tourney" | Tiberias - 22' | 12/01/13

Brandon Sauls and Clay Morphis strike again in the last 30 minutes to bring home the prize. The team also included Clay Morphis Sr. this year which allowed them to weigh in a third redfish. The tournaments format pretty much makes this tournament a redfish tournament, unless you can find some very large trout. All three redfish were with in the 18 to 27 inch North Carolina slot despite all skeptics out there. These fish had some shoulders on them. The largest two were also weighed and verfied here at the OIFC. Clay Morphis Jr. has taken top spot and by far the largest slot fish ever weighed at the OIFC coming in at 7.90 pounds. That is a very solid redfish! Brandon Sauls should slide on the board somewhere as his fish weighed a solid 7.3 pounds. Their total weight that won the tournmant for a three fish aggregate was 21.2 pounds. Second place was taken by Russ, Lexy, and myself weighing in three respectable redfish at 17.1 pounds. All winnings were donated back to the tournament. The tournament supports a great foundation that is working to insure that fishing and hunting opportunities will exist for our youth for years to come. Please take moment and look at www.cysworld.org See ya on the water!
