"Warm Weather To Blame" | Do Work / OIFC | 11/24/14

~The following report is from Shane Britt:

~Still catching trout. It was a little bit slower then last week for me. I caught fish but not the numbers that I've been. I blame it on the warm temperatures not the rain usually nasty weather makes for good trout fishing. I threw everything you could think of bucktails, jigs, hard baits everything short of live bait it took thinking out the box and tying on a Alabama rig to start putting a nice stringer of fish together. Had 1 nice fat fish that could of been a citation but not real sure because I did not weigh it. Sometimes it takes experimenting with different stuff to get any results.

Yesterday the trout were hitting on live shrimp.  Capt. Brant replenished ours yesterday.  They are still $5 a dozen!!!!  The OIFC also carries the Alabama Rig which is a productive way to fish.

Also the OIFC and Shane are working together to make the OIFC a dealer for Britts Bucktails..Stay tuned!!!!

"He So Crazy!!!" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 11/24/14

Jeff and I weaseled on trout fishing yesterday because of the weather.  However a little rain and cold doesn't deter Bonecrusher Sauls.  Armed with live shrimp Brandon slayed the the trout.  We have shrimp and if the creek don't rise we will have them as long as they are around.  We also have the cheapest shrimp.

The most difficult part of using live shrimp is keeping them alive!

In our area there a two main factors that kill shrimp in bait buckets. Overcrowding,

Overcrowding

Many anglers will buy a large amount of live shrimp to last them the entire day and place them all in a small bucket only to find that with in a few hours they are all dead. To help avoid this it is best to keep large amount of shrimp in a large container or multiple small ones.

A good rule of thumb is to keep no more than one dozen shrimp per gallon of container for any long period of time. If all other conditions are met, 50-60 shrimp can live almost all day in 5 gallons of water.

Bait BucketLack of Oxygen

Shrimp in a small container will quickly deplete the oxygen in their water and die shortly after. A good solution to this is either a bubbler or a water circulation pump. Both of these disturb that water surface quite a bit and cause the water to absorb more oxygen. The more shrimp that are in a container the more water movement and oxygen that is needed.

Another simple solution for this is to use flow through bait buckets. These are the buckets that have holes in them and all the angler to lower them into the water so the bait always has a source for clean and aerated water.

The OIFC sells aireators, buckets with an aireator & Frabil flow through bait buckets.

"Motivated" | Tiberias - 22' | 11/20/14

It is difficult to get motivated to go fishing when the temperature starts off in the 20's. I have talked to several folks who are wearing out the trout. I eased down to the dock this morning taking note of how clear and green the water has gotten. There was very little wind this morning and the tide was approaching dead low. I started to feel that itch! I just hope they continue to bite like this through the weekend. Some solid trout between 2 to 4 pounds are hanging around. All the usual places this time of year seem to be producing. From the Little River jetties to the Cape Fear river channel. White and chartruese colored soft plastics worked extremely slow with a little pro-cure scent did the trick today. I rather catch them on soft plastics myself. However, we have live shrimp available for $5 dozen. I don't expect they will last long, so come get'em. See ya on the water!

"Trout Fishing With Artificials" | Do Work / OIFC | 11/17/14

~This was posted by Shane Britt, an excellent local angler who fishes almost exclusivly with artificials, Shane Britt

In the past 2 day.s I have probably caught 60 to 80 trout with a 80% keeper ratio. Finally got in a nice little spot this evening where these 3 to 4 lb fish made there new home in my cooler. All other fish was released healthy bsack to be caught another day. All fish were caught on a variety of bucktails tipped with various soft plastics. Main producer has been a mullet imitation bucktail with some sort of chartreuse grub. Not 1 peice of live bait has been thrown.

Thanks for the info Shane

I would suggest using a Spro 1/4 oz bucktail tipped with Berkley gulp chartreuse grubs or New Penny grubs or shrimp.  All have been having excellent results.-Capt. Rickey

The 2nd picture is of trout Brett Fulford caught Sunday while fishing the Lockwood Folly River with a friend.  Brett said these hit on a MirrOlure he was pitching on a grassy bank

~~The trout bite was on at the Little River Jetties today. Well until the cold rain came then who cared. Not sure if the flounder bite was on at the OIFC but if it was barefooted Brayden was ready. BTW Jeff was using the Ocean Isle Fishing Center's hand tied trout rigs. Made by your's truly to match the local bite.

"Dust Has Settled" | Do Work / OIFC | 11/12/14

Everyone is back from the Nationals a little tired but safe and sound.  Now our focus is turning to the hot trout bite in our area.  Today, Shane Britt fished the Shallotte River and had some pretty good luck.  Shane said he was using a buck tail tipped with a soft plastic artifical on the rising tide. There have been a lot of trout caught on  white Gulp grub and shrimp on a red jig head.  The fish must have had a convention and decided they liked the Gulp New Penny again because trout are being caught on them.  Come on down and enjoy a less crowded ICW, shop the OIFC, get a good meal and watch the game or race at the Wing Company and take advantage of the trout bite.
