"First Backwater School Class..." | Tiberias - 22' | 03/23/13

Last night Capt. Jeff and I hosted OIFC's first backwater fishing land class. We dicussed with our 4 class members the importance of the details. Covering topics on best line choices, equipment, anchors, knots, and the importance of shealth in your approach to the fish. This morning we all met at the dock to take the classroom to the water. Mother nature continues to dish out some uncomfortable weather for fishermen. All four guys agreed to getting in a half day of fishing despite the extremely wet conditions. Bob and Kevin were the two class members that I had the priviledge of guiding this morning. We could not have started out in better conditions first thing this morning. The boat was stocked with artificials, clams, and live mud minnows. We made our approach as dicussed in class and hooked our first redfish with in a few minutes. Most of the reds were just below the 18 to 27inch slot and were released to be caught another day. We did manage to find a few slot fish and even upgraded to a nice 24" red to top off the livewell. The rain started to fall. We were determined to get the half day completed. We headed up the Shallotte River to practice our artificial lure presentation. We got a lot of practice with little feed back. One keeper trout did smack an artificial to prove they will eat a soft plastic! The rain had turned into a steady soaking, so we headed back to the dock. Thank you Bob and Kevin for joining our class. I feel confident that you learned many great things from our class today and I am sure we will see ya on the water!

We had a great time! Thanks for taking us out! My father-in-law thought there was really no fish in that inter-coastal until now! You finally helped me prove him wrong!

"Freeze that Smile!" | Tiberias - 22' | 03/22/13

The Smith family joined me this morning for a half day backwater adventure. We started our trip around 8 o'clock in near freezing temperatures. I made a quick little run into a shallow creek. We had a few live mud minnows itching to go to work. The very first mud minnow got eaten before the sinker hit the bottom. A little short run, a few good headshakes and out came the hook. We reloaded...next minnow gets drilled before hitting the bottom. The redfish went around a dock piling and cut the line. Reloaded...third times a charm...Lia finally lands our first red of the day just under the slot. Anna was next....minnow under the dock...chirp, chirp...crickets! Really? Three in a row and they quit that quick? We made a slight adjustment and got her hooked up! We had several more chances to land reds, but only managed to get 6 or 7 to the boat. We made a move up the Shallotte River and beat several hundred yards of bank to pick up one 18 inch trout. The weather may have thrown us a curve ball, but we smacked it right back at the pitcher! Thank you Bill, Drew, Anna, and Lia for fishing with me! I will look at this picture for many years to come and a big smile will come over my face! See ya on the water!

"Stream Action Today" | Real-Time Update | 03/22/13

Headed in from stream with box full of fish. Found wahoo in 300ft of water after working offshore to find decent water. After catching wahoo and dealing with boneheads we started jigging to mix things up. Amberjack were plentiful as well as other bottom species. Capt. Steele took hours of video and when he finishes editing the sailor talk out will post it. Come on down and join us. Stay tuned for more updates.

Team OIFC/Yellowfin composed of Brant & Barrett McMullan, Brian & Austin Aycock,  1st Mate Derrick, and this reporter have made it to Nags Head for a day of blue fin tuna fishing.  Other than getting lost, hitting a dear and being certain Brian ran over a skunk, the trip was uneventful.  We will keep everyone updated as the day goes on tomorrow and depending on our signal.

Check out our Facebook page for some video of the trip.l
