"Fun fishing on a beautiful senc day... " | Real-Time Update | 07/18/13

Had a great time fishing with mike lappin and crew aboard his 34 yellowfin, the over equipped. Started in 100 feet slow trolling and were instantly rewarded with a decent king and an african pompano... From there it was on with multiple bites from ap's,nice kings, a 35 plus lb cobia and jacks. Had 1 king that went 30 easy... Lots of fun on a gorgeous day...all kings released to fight another day. It was a super nice day on the water. If you missed this one, im sorry. "Don't drink the coffee" | Tiberias - 22' | 07/18/13

I have been tempted to add a little sugar and cream to the water and give it a taste. Nah! I wouldn't recommend that. Apparently a few fish have made some adjustments and are handling the water conditions well. You can still find red drum, black drum, and speckled trout hanging in our backwaters. Each day continues to add new challenges, but we continue to make adjustments finding a few fish to tighten up the lines. The mullet are finally showing up in several places. The redfish seem to be keying in on the mullet right now. Speckled trout and black drum are live shrimp eating machines, but you have got to get it past the pinfish. We also pulled out the soft plastics late last week and caught several reds. White color patterns were working the best. As always working a 1/8th ounce jighead slowly with a one two twitch and pause action was getting the bite. My favorite soft plastics of choice are 4" Sea Shads by Bass Assassin. The best two color patterns right now have been the sand trout and green moon colors. Working hard and being patient will yield results even in these conditions. Good luck out there. See ya on the water!

"Happy Birthday Aaron" | Real-Time Update | 07/17/13

First Mate Aaron Dew celebrated his 16th birthday today with family and friends at the OIFC. Many of you have watched Aaron grow up around the fishing center for the last 6 years. He started going with me on trips when I ran the It Works learning about fishing and more importantly how to socialize with people from around the country and what a good work ethic is. I am very proud of how he has grown as a person and am eternally grateful to Capt. Brant and all of the McMullen family for allowing Aaron the opportunity.to become part of the OIFC family. Happy Birthday Son.

Are you kidding me Kevin???? Just saw this picture on Kevin Sneed's facebook page.  It seems he caught this stud King Mackerel while shark fishing near Yaupon Pier.... Way to go Kevin.  I guess the Kingfish have given up trying to avoid the pond water out on the beach....

"Got Em On Update" | Hail Yeah / OIFC | 07/15/13

We had been looking forward to the Got em On tournament ever since the end of the Jolly Mon. The weather seemed to be on everyone’s mind as the tournament drew near. The tournament changed from the one day format to a pick your day between Saturday and Sunday. We went back and forth on which day we wanted to fish several times. Finally, 10 minutes before the deadline to declare your day, we bit the bullet and elected to fish Saturday. The forecast was calling for the wind to be blowing hard SE and then to blow really hard starting around 12 with strong thunderstorms all day. Sounds great right? Austin, Edward and I got the boat loaded and headed out Saturday morning around 6:00 am. Once we cleared the inlet, the plan was to head out to 70-80 feet of water and start fishing. It only took about 5 minutes to figure out that we would never see 70-80’ of water so we went to plan B and headed to the 90’s. With the rough sea conditions all week and a lot of nasty water pushing out of the inlets I knew there was a good chance that we would be wasting our time, but we didn’t have a plan C. We circled the area one time and settled on a spot to drop the anchor. With the anchor set, we started chumming and got the kite up. It didn’t take long for the action to heat up. We spend the next several hours catching big Spanish, small kings and 137 sharks. In the middle of the action we had a king in the low to mid 20’s greyhound on a kite bait and miss the hooks. This boosted our spirits and we went back to the grind. Finally around 11:30 “it” happened. Shortly after I dropped a blue fish back on a balloon rig, a big king grabbed the bait and headed straight offshore at a high rate of speed. The fish kept acting like he was going to slow down so I decided not to throw the poly ball right away. Mistake. Fish kept going and going and going. Finally, I asked Edward to throw the ball. He ran to the bow and at the moment he had the anchor line off of the cleat, the fish was gone. Not sure what I said at that exact moment but I’m pretty sure it is not appropriate for this report and I pray the boys never repeat my profanity filled rant. All fishermen know that empty feeling in your stomach that only losing a big fish can cause. It is a hole that can only be filled by catching another big one. As if on cue, the wind started blowing 25+ mph around noon. The boys and I decided it was time to call it quits. We got inside Shallotte inlet and decided we had better look at the fish in the bag and decide if we were going to make the run to Carolina beach. We were tired, hungry, soaking wet and wanted to go home. We made several calls and the consensus was that we needed to weigh in. The fish was 14.65 pounds and earned us a little check for the top Jr. Angler. Congrats to Barrett, Brant, Amy, Caroline and Brayden McMullan on their victory. Caroline and Brayden were really the top Jr anglers and they truly earned it.
