I've caught plenty of them at the Little River Jetties this year.

Keith Berciunas 08/26/2013

Could it have been a nurse shark? We caught a few a couple weeks ago on a wreck out of Southport. A couple short pulls (didnt really "RUN") then like pulling dead weight to the boat. Both were caught on light tackle-flounder gear.. Was pretty cool to see, i didnt think we had Nurse sharks here.

Nurse shark

Capt. Rickey 08/26/2013

From Tommy Helms today: That was some kind of Shark ! My friend Greg Adkins managed to bring that fish to the boat on a Penn open face and ugly stick , it was maybe 7 or 8 Ft. and at least 200 Lbs.. The Barracuda were terrible one ate half of one flounder , all this happened at the Jolly Mon Reef ! I had no idea were I was because the buoy was gone , just some crazy No. on my GPS I had two flounder 5.3 & 5.1 and half of another one at least 5 plus that old cuda took half off ! So have a great day and see you on the pond

"Blue Pearl, Black Bass" | Do Work / OIFC | 08/25/13

Mikennerly and his son Michael took my two grandsons out today for a little bottom fishing on The Blue Pearl. It was a great day on the water. These two boys, Jack and Will wore the Black Bass out! Not a lot of keepers but two tired boys who are now hooked on fishing.

Thanks Mike and hopefully you've turned them into fishermen too

Send your reports & pics to sunset69@atmc.net & I'll get them on.

My thanks to Tommy Helms for noting that the Jolly Mon Reef Buoy is gone. About a week ago I spent a half hour trying to find it and thought my GPS was in error because we never did find it.

"Blue Pearl" | Do Work / OIFC | 08/23/13

Butch Myers fished today with Mike kennerly on his boat, a 31 cape Horn named The Blue Pearl.

They had four Cudas from 140' until they got into deeper water at 240'. Then they picked up these two AUGUST Wahoo. Water was 80 everywhere and a clean blue out deep. The Blue Pearl stopped on the way back in at 80' and caught some nice Seabass 14 - 16" and then ran on in.
Thanks for the report Butch & Mike.  Mike the OIFC crew wishes you the best with your knees.

If anyone has any reports with pictures please send them to me at Sunset69@atmc.net.

"Backwater Fishing Report" | Tiberias - 22' | 08/22/13

The action remains steady in the backwater. We have managed to find a few flounder for the dinner table and hurt some elbows with some hard fighting reds. Live mullet minnows on light carolina rigs will do the trick on the flounder and reds. Some anglers have been using white colored bucktails and soft plastics to catch flounder as well. Live shrimp will catch just about everything else...under a cork or on a carolina rig...be prepared to bait your hook often. See ya on the water!

"Great day to be on the water" | Real-Time Update | 08/21/13

The Tethel family, first mate Austin Aycock and my self were aboard the Carolina Cat today. We set out around 7:30 to look for some live bait down around the Holden beach area. With no promising signs of Pogies we decided to head around 19 miles offshore. Immediately we were greeted with short strikes and one fish that pulled the hooks. After slow trolling through the numbers one last time we pushed off about 7 more miles into some cleaner water. As we deployed the spread I turned to tell Ritchie Tethel that we were marking a good amount of bait on the depth finder. The words never came out of my mouth before Ritchie was running for the down rigger rod that was hooked up on a nice 10# Mahi. Shortly after, the other down rigger line hooks up to another 8-10# Mahi. The Tethel crew battled like professionals as we boated both fish to start our day. We continued to troll around the same numbers picking up one more 10-12# Mahi before we picked up and decided to go bottom fishing. This decision paid off as well. We were greeted with big sea bass, trigger fish and a short gag grouper. Tired out from bottom fishing, we got a report from Captain Rube McMullan that the Mahi were schooling near his boat on the same numbers we caught ours just a couple hours before. We headed back to our same spot for one last go at a bigger Mahi. After the spread was set our long line sings. No jumps, no color, what is it? As we laid eyes on the fish it turned out to be a short king mackerel to end our day. We headed back to the dock with 7 Mahi, 10 sea bass and 4 trigger fish. The weather has finally stabilized and the fish are letting us know. These next couple 10kt or less days are perfect opportunities for smaller boats to head out in that 20 mile range to get on some of these fish. Come on by the OIFC and pick up some king rigs and chum to catch these fish. They're out there waiting to be caught. Capt. Derek Treffinger

"Awesome Friends" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 08/21/13

I had the pleasure of fishing with Paxton and Chandler from Charlotte. Two boys that live only miles away from each other. Met at OIB a few summers back. They ended up fishing with me this week, I have never fished with two finer, more appriciative young men in my career. These two are welcome back on the Get Busy Fishing boat any time.
