"Pack Man's Reports " | Do Work / OIFC | 11/25/16

Started the day at the 100/400 big wahoo were being caught there as well as mahi and black fin! We had an early bite and it slowed down so we moved to the blackjack and picked up another wahoo and a few short strikes! Never had a wahoo hit so hard on a marado lure that the wahoo bit the hooks off the lure! Everything was caught on black and purple some guys were saying red and black! Also heard the guys at the steeples saying the blackfins were so thick they had 20 in the boat! It was slick out there today and was perfect couldn't have asked for a better day! Water temp was 76 today!  Thanks for the great Report Billy!

Lobster on the menu for Thanksgiving dinner! We did a couple dives and found some "sea bugs" as well as a few Grouper and Hogfish. Pictured are Amy and Brayden McMullan and Austin Aycock. Also thanks to our co-divers and chaperones Cameron and Brittany Sebastian of Coastal Scuba. PS- also shown here is video of a Great White shark that was filmed less than 5 miles from where we were diving; happy she didn't find her way to us! Capt. Brant McMullan

"Congratulations Joe Winslow" | Do Work / OIFC | 11/22/16

We at the SKA wanted to express our congratulations to Captain Joe Winslow of the CCU Saltwater Fishing Team.  He is the 2016 Hall of Fame Inductee.

“Fishing is a humbling sport. It teaches you life skills like patience, hard work, humility and teamwork.”  That’s what this year’s Hall of Fame inductee said!  No stranger to the kingfish community, so it should be no surprise that Joe Winslow, one of the most dominant Carolina King Mackerel tournament fishermen, is receiving this honor tonight.  Dr. Joe Winslow starting teaching at Coastal Carolina University back in 1997 working as the Director in the Office of Online Learning from 2013-2016 and recently transitioned back to a normal professor in order to have more free time. In 2008, six students approached Joe and asked if he could teach them how to fish in the area. Agreeing to do so, the official club was born! Today the current roster holds almost 60 current CCU students. Joe takes club members on fun fishing trips when the bite is hot so students watch him in action and hands-on learning.  He takes a select few along with him to fish SKA tournament seasons. This year, Hooligan has had 1st, 2nd, and 4th place finishes in the past 4 tournaments, claiming the number one spot in Division 9.  Joe also teaches online and distance learning so when the fishing club hosts their annual seminars, he can live stream them for people across the country to watch.
James Coleman, CCU fishing club president said this about Joe: “Joe Winslow is an outstanding fisherman and mentor who is very knowledgeable and has achieved so much in his career. Myself and others can always count on Joe for guidance, fishing related or not, and he is always honest and kind. Without Joe our club of fishermen here at Coastal Carolina University would only be a fraction of what it is today and we greatly appreciate him and everything that he has done for us since the beginning."

Congratulations Joe!!!

"Thanksgiving Holiday SALE" | OIFC | 11/21/16

Big Fishing Weekend Ahead

Inshore:  Capt. Jacob and Capt. Jeff both report extremely good fishing for Speckled Trout, throwing in quite a few Flounder, Red Drum and Black Drum in the mix.  Hot spots have included Saucepan Creek area, Shallotte River area up past Holden Seafood, Rock wall in back of Shallotte Inlet, Ocean Isle and Sunset Beach bridges and Little River Jetties.  OIFC HAS LIVE SHRIMP and without a doubt that is a very effective way to fish for Trout and other inshore species.  However, the water has cleared up nicely and the Trout are responding to artificials; and thus with clearer water, you will want to choose colors that are more natural.

Check out this HOW-TO from Capt. Jacob on using artificials for Speckled Trout- CLICK HERE

Offshore:  We learned last year that November is the new October, and this year is no different.  Fishing for King Mackerel, Grouper and Wahoo is very good.  The Kings are going to be holding in the 65'-80' depth range at spots such as the Shark Hole, Jungle, Atlantic Ledge, York Hole and Horseshoe.  The Menhaden have gotten tough to catch on the beach, so I wouldn't spend any time with that but rather focus on using dead Cigar Minnows and jigging live Cigars on the fishing grounds.  The Grouper are in the same places you are King Mackerel fishing right now.  A live Cigar Minnow will get a bite; the key is to be anchored up directly over the structure.  The Wahoo bite has been good at the BlackJack, 100/400 and MacMarle'n ledge areas.  It has seemed the best fishing has been inshore of the break from 140'-180' as of late.  There will also be Blackfin mixed out there as well.

We hope to see you this upcoming holiday weekend.  Use the sale opportunity to fill someone's or your own stocking.  Tis' the season.

Headed up to Hatteras with Brian Allen and friends to r mind myself that King Mackerel fishing isn't hard when you are where the fish are! After a week in Ft Pierce, FL chasing Kings this helps my mental health. SKA Nationals would be a blast on this bite; equivalent to Biloxi. Capt. Brant McMullan

"Finally!" | Tiberias - 22' | 11/15/16

Craig Cox and his dad Don Cox joined me this past Friday for a half day fishing trip. This trip had been scheduled and rescheduled three times due to inclement weather. Finally, we caught a beautiful day and it paid off. We caught the majority of our trout on soft plastics. Tossing 4" Bass Assassins in sand trout color produced a two man limit and then some. We kept enough to feed 6 and I kept a few for my family as well.  It was great spending time on the water with great repeat clients. See ya on the water!
