"Sneads ferry " | Choice of Two / OIFC | 08/19/13

Well Saturdays forecast looked great so we decided we would go fun fishing and after some thought we decided heck lets enter the tournament , fish down here and if we get lucky make the 65 mile run up to sneeds ferry .. Well as we left the inlet we were greeted with a snotty rough ocean that was like a washing machine .. We caught bait and headed out to a spot west of the navy and set out our spread .. First line in was hit within seconds small king  which we released  to fight another day.. Within the next 5 minutes we had a smoker hit the long line and run 3/4 of the spool of before we could get turned on him and as soon as we got the rod man up in the bow and worked to get on top of the fish he tail whipped us . Oh we'll we set them back out and picked at a few more kings but nothing big enough to make the run up to sneeds .. It was a fun day luck just wasn't on our side other than when Trask dropped the rod in the water and the downrigger line actually caught the rod and reel .. " now that was luck ".. We had a good time and fished in good company ..

For those who have heard/read/seen the Brandon Sauls Bonecrusher show, I can attest it's the read deal. To say Brandon is "dialed in" on the inshore fishing world is a gross understatement. We caught 9 "no need to measure em" flounders and released a couple nice reds. The good news is I caught the 2 biggest[shown in pic]; the bad news is both fish, I thought I was hung up, and was as surprised as the fish when they broke the surface. Oh well, maybe making progress on my inshore fishing as last time I gave a shot at flounder fishing, another local flounder legend, Woody Wooten caught 9 and I caught 1, and the one I caught he told me "hey, you got one on".

Capt. Rickey 08/18/2013

UH OOOOO!!! Looks like we have another in shore powerhouse. Brandon I hope you weighed those flounder in and any slot red drum you had.

"Citation week" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 08/18/13

What a week. Fighting rain showers and east winds, surprising the fishing has been good for a BIG fish or two. For those of you that think a citation is a bad thing well it can be, but in North Carolina a citation fish is one that is reconized as an exceptional catch. Steve Huie fished with me Saturday near the mouth of Sass Pan Creek. We were casting for flounder. The schools of mullets steaming by were getting exploding on by something. I took out a float rig and baited it up. Next thing I knew Steve was hooked up on this awesome 5.2 lb trout.

"Fishing N the Rain" | Tiberias - 22' | 08/17/13

I have been blessed with some die hard fishermen this week. It appears that the redfish appreciate the fact that we were willing to get wet for them. The bite has been pretty steady on the redfish front and plenty of flounder hanging around. Capt. Jeff Williamson landed a stud  5.2 pound speckled trout first thing this morning. Hopefully he will post a picture soon. The conditions have been difficult to deal with as usual this season. The rain has been coming down by the bucket fulls and the East winds have been relentless. Never the less, we continue to push ourselves to the very edge of our comfort zone and manage to pull out a few fish. Thank you all for coming out in the rain! See ya on the water!

"Team Beeracuda" | Do Work / OIFC | 08/17/13

  •
We teamed up on the Choice of Two Fishing Team Cape Horn this morning for the Sneads Ferry King Mackeral tournament. Last night's forecast was for great seas all day. Well, it was wrong. We left out at 5 am with howling winds and a crappy ocean. After running 45 miles off, we put lines in and within minutes we had a small king. Gonna be a good day? We let him go knowing action would be hot and within minutes of that, the Mac Daddy sent the line screaming!!! I mean smoker status.Little did we know he had plans to tail whip the line and got off within a couple of minutes. And from then on, it was tail whip after tail whip after tail whip. Changed to longer leaders, no luck. Oh yeah, did I mention it was a steady rain all day? It was the busiest slowest day of fishing ever. It was a good time on the water with great friends but a crappy day for fishing. No worries, Beeracuda will be in the Sailfish with new reels and ready for the South Brunswick tournament for Labor Day!!

Thanks for letting me post this guys

"Snead's Ferry KMT" | Hail Yeah / OIFC | 08/17/13

"Everyone has a plan 'till they get punched in the mouth."  Mike Tyson

Myself, Austin and Edward Julian loaded up this morning and headed out with plans to bring home the big check from the Snead's Ferry KMT.  We had been keeping a close eye on the weather and after seeing the forecast of 10 knots or less and seas of 2', we all had high hopes.  We set out a solid plan of: Leave out of Ocean Isle, head toward the Navy wreck, and work our way to the east util the scales opened and we could weigh in.  Sounds good right?

Then we got punched in the mouth.  We cleared the Shallotte inlet in the dark, with a driving rain and a hard NE wind blowing.  The ocean was like a washing machine.  With a hard NE wind blowing and a large SW swell, anywhere we wanted to go was dead into it.   We completely changed the plan and decided to head out to the Atlantic Ledge.  The bite we had all dreamed about never materialized.  We managed to catch 6 barracuda (up to 50#'s) and a jack head.  With the large number and size of the barracudas, it would have been very difficult to catch an entire king.  We slugged it out all day in the rough seas and rain at the ledge and did not have a king bite.  Once we left, we got about 5 miles inshore and the seas were completely flat and we were able to finally push the motors up past 2500 RPM's.  We will get 'em next time.  As Austing told me today, "If it was easy, there would be a manual."

This is Mrs. Judy Helms holding two fine flounder she and husband caught at one of the AR's. Judy's husband Tommy hasn't been out as much as in the past because he's got some skin cancer going on caused by the sun.  Cover up peoples!  We have some sunshirts and face/head covers at the OIFC like the one's our captains wear daily.  The shirts are cool looking with our logo and a heck of a lot cheaper than famous name brands.

"Happy Birthday Denise" | Real-Time Update | 08/14/13

This past Saturday, the 10th, was my stepdaughter's birthday. When planning what to do, her mom Pam, husband Jeremy Dixon and I put together a fishing trip with our mutual friend, Capt. Chris Critt from Holden Beach. Our plan was to run about 20-25 miles to an area we wanted to check out for bottom fishing. We began slow trolling the area as we searched the bottom to find some areas for the women to catch sea bass. Not long after we set our spread, we had a short strike on our left long line. Excitement followed as we thought we may have found some kings. We reset our lines and turned back into the area. After a few passes our short flat line was smoked and the chase was on. Speculation about the species on the other end ranged from king to jack to cobia. Only when the fish turned and ran hard toward the boat did I announce I thought we may have a wahoo. About 40 minutes later Denise played eyes on her birthday present, a 71.2lb wahoo. Happy Birthday Denise.

"Fried Crispy Backwater Report" | Tiberias - 22' | 08/13/13

August is upon us and we have experienced some of the warmest days of the season this week. The water temperatures start off around 80 in the morning and nearly reaching 90 degrees in the afternoon. The water color conditions have been less than favorable all season. We continue to grind it out finding a few fish willing to bite. Live mullet minnows have shown up by the thousands and plenty of shrimp can be found in the creeks. The table has been set...the question remains...will the fish show up at chow time. Here are some hightlights from the last few trips. See ya on the water!
