"Trout Report" | Do Work / OIFC | 11/16/13

Brandon Sauls and Clay Morphis pulled up to the dock today with several live trout they had caught at the jetties using live shrimp.  The biggest of their trout was caught by Brandon and weighed in at 4.85 lbs.  Brandon and Clay revived their trout and let the go for another day.

Within 30minutes, Dr. Jeff Wallen and his son Joshua pulled up and Miss Amanda weighed their trout at 4.90 lbs.  Dr. Jeff and Joshua were also fishing the Jetties using OIFC live shrimp.

We will be temporarly our of shrimp due to mechanical problems with our supplier's boat.

"Nationals .North Carolina style . " | Choice of Two / OIFC | 11/12/13

The national championship in Biloxi Mississippi was a clean sweep for the Carolina boys with the first second and third spots all coming from N.C. The week started of with bad weather which kept our team stuck on land basically from Tuesday to Friday catching mullets and ribbonfish daily just to pass time .. The. Fish weren't at the usual spot or spots rather during the pro tournament ans had our team scratching our heads on weather to run 130+ miles to the west delta or fish some of the rigs that have been holding fish for the pro tournament .. We decided after looking at the sat shots and currents wind etc . That the fish just had to be at the horseshoe so we elected to start there despite the pro tournament results .. Well we arrived at 9 am 80 miles offshore and were the only boat  there .". Oh  No maybe we made a mistake boys " .  Put out our spread and immediately had a fish hit and bite through the rig . Next line fires off and again bit through 60 lb wire . After missing another fish we switched up the rigs and hooked up to a solid 35lb fish  .. It was at this time I see the windy conditions boat roll up as well as a few others .. We kept working a small pod of hard tails just under the surface and were rewarded around 11 clock with a monster . The fish ran like a wahoo and had us stretched out running toward the crowd of boats  not to mention we are hooked up with another fish on the bow of the boat .. We focused on the fish that was making crazy wahoo like runs and after about a 10 minute balttle the fish showed his shoulders and I got a gaff in him . 58.lber .. High fives and a few choice words were yelled on the boat and we went back to work .. We worked hard and caught a bunch of 30+ lb fish that we released and just could never get the next big bite we were hoping for and finally at 2 clock we were out of bait and out of time  realistically with the weather as rough as it was .. We decided to head to the scales  where our fish took over the lead but , the lead didn't last long  when the ocean isle fishing center boat rolled up . They took over the leader board and bumped us into second place .. The boys know what they are doing is all I can say .. It was nice being in the same bracket with these guys along with the 3rd place boat from nc the Windy Conditions Team .. I saw these guys at work and they are a force to be reckoned with as well .. Congrats to all the guys and especially the N.C boys that represented so well ..

Captain Corey, Fantastic win! I am very happy for you, your team, and OIFC!

Mike Kennerly 11/17/2013

Great job and congratulations to the OIFC. Great job Corey representing the rest of us Cape Horn owners and I am sure all the Angler's Marine staff are proud!

Corey Bellamy 11/14/2013

Thanks Brant . Next time I'm gonna have some VHF problems lol.. Nah man glad we all got to have some fun and congrats on catching 2 awesome fish

Gary Reagan 11/14/2013

Congratulations to all three teams! That is quite an accomplishment.

Capt. Brant McMullan 11/13/2013

Thanks for making sure we got to the fish. Team worked well as we split up and then all converged as the bite became obvious. We have a good story to tell and I will work on crafting it over the next few days. The results looked pretty but getting there was not... Stay tuned. Good job Choice of Two

Corey 11/13/2013

No problem rube I felt sorry for you guys since you haven't won since 2011 lol .. Great bite

Rube McMullan 11/13/2013

For the record, Corey called us over to the bite as we were at the City Rigs. Sorry we knocked you out of first but sure happy you called us over! For those King tourney fishermen that don't make the trip to the championship in Biloxi, I promise if you are into the world of King fishing, you need to make the trip to Mecca. To free line baits and catch 30's-40's-50's as fast as you can go is an experience that you will never forget.

"Lemonade" | Real-Time Update | 11/10/13

We have all heard the expression..."when life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Well that is what Paul and Matt Nelson, Pascal and Justin Zissel and Chris Cochran did yesterday when mother nature threw us lemons. They have been trying for sometime to fish the stream with us but weather has prevented us from making it. With time running out on their schedules we opted to give an offshore bottom fishing trip a try. With less than ideal conditions First Mate Aaron and myself took our eager party on a mission to seek limits on bottom fish. We made our first stop in 65 feet of water and of course began catching sea bass. A few keepers but not the class of fish we were seeking. So we battled our way out to 80-90 feet and jackpot. Sea bass 13 inches and up were hungry. Along with the bass were very nice bee liners and big grunts. It wasn't long before Aaron said we were close to our limit on bass. So we started keeping only the bass that were over 15 inches. And there were plenty. We took a short break and moved to another location to see what we could find. More bass and bee liners as well as amberjack and a cobia completed our day. We returned to the dock with a 5 man limit of big bass several bee liners and grunts and amberjack. Definitely turning lemons into lemonade is what the Nelson party accomplished given the condtions. Aaron and I really enjoyed fishing with them and look forward to making that stream trip in the spring.

"Team OIFC wins 1st & 2nd place in SKA National Championship" | OIFC | 11/09/13

We did it- Again!  Team OIFC- Brant, Barrett, Rube, Amy, Caroline and Brayden won the SKA National Championship King Mackerel tournament for the 3rd time in 5 years.  We scaled a 48+ and 56+ for a 105 pound 2 fish aggregate.  I will follow up with a more detailed report, but the short version is we again got onto the red hot Salt Dome bite that yielded our previous championship winning fish.  We fought fish all day and through the mass of 30 pound Kings we plucked a few monsters to take the victory.  This was not as "clean" or "efficient" victory as our 2011 championship, but we got it done --- there is a story, I just need to reflect and think about all that happened.

Just as awesome as our success, Corey Bellamy and his team Choice of Two/OIFC finished second place with the tournaments biggest fish, a 58+ and a 36+ for a 94 pound aggregate.  As mentioned they caught the event's largest King.  I'm very happy and proud of these guys.

And......  3rd place was taken by Wilmington, NC based team Windy Conditions who it just so happens is crewed by OIFC charter captain Steele Park.

So- Southeastern NC took top 3 AND the OIFC took the top 3 in the 2013 SKA National Championship.

Way to go everyone!!!  Here a couple of prelim pictures

Pictures above are Mike Kalish and his son, Jon, of High Point, NC. They fished today aboard their new Cobia 22 at the JUNGLE, catching this 20lb. King on skirted dead bait (Cigars) rig. The said the water was only 65 degrees, but obviously a few Kings are still that close in. CONGRATULATIONS! Dr. T reporting for OIFC

"Trout Action..." | Tiberias - 22' | 11/08/13

The trout action seems to be picking up. The wind is blowing hard and the mercury dropped slam out the bottom of the thermoeter today. Believe it or not that will most likely get the trout biting even stronger as the water continues to cool down. My favorite water temperature for trout is between 55 and 60 degrees. Yesterday's water temperature was still in the mid 60's and I rate the bite as fair. Again, these next two cold nights should get the water right and the trout should start to bite! See ya on the water!
