"Don't drink the coffee" | Tiberias - 22' | 07/18/13

I have been tempted to add a little sugar and cream to the water and give it a taste. Nah! I wouldn't recommend that. Apparently a few fish have made some adjustments and are handling the water conditions well. You can still find red drum, black drum, and speckled trout hanging in our backwaters. Each day continues to add new challenges, but we continue to make adjustments finding a few fish to tighten up the lines. The mullet are finally showing up in several places. The redfish seem to be keying in on the mullet right now. Speckled trout and black drum are live shrimp eating machines, but you have got to get it past the pinfish. We also pulled out the soft plastics late last week and caught several reds. White color patterns were working the best. As always working a 1/8th ounce jighead slowly with a one two twitch and pause action was getting the bite. My favorite soft plastics of choice are 4" Sea Shads by Bass Assassin. The best two color patterns right now have been the sand trout and green moon colors. Working hard and being patient will yield results even in these conditions. Good luck out there. See ya on the water!

"Happy Birthday Aaron" | Real-Time Update | 07/17/13

First Mate Aaron Dew celebrated his 16th birthday today with family and friends at the OIFC. Many of you have watched Aaron grow up around the fishing center for the last 6 years. He started going with me on trips when I ran the It Works learning about fishing and more importantly how to socialize with people from around the country and what a good work ethic is. I am very proud of how he has grown as a person and am eternally grateful to Capt. Brant and all of the McMullen family for allowing Aaron the opportunity.to become part of the OIFC family. Happy Birthday Son.

"Got Em On Update" | Hail Yeah / OIFC | 07/15/13

We had been looking forward to the Got em On tournament ever since the end of the Jolly Mon. The weather seemed to be on everyone’s mind as the tournament drew near. The tournament changed from the one day format to a pick your day between Saturday and Sunday. We went back and forth on which day we wanted to fish several times. Finally, 10 minutes before the deadline to declare your day, we bit the bullet and elected to fish Saturday. The forecast was calling for the wind to be blowing hard SE and then to blow really hard starting around 12 with strong thunderstorms all day. Sounds great right? Austin, Edward and I got the boat loaded and headed out Saturday morning around 6:00 am. Once we cleared the inlet, the plan was to head out to 70-80 feet of water and start fishing. It only took about 5 minutes to figure out that we would never see 70-80’ of water so we went to plan B and headed to the 90’s. With the rough sea conditions all week and a lot of nasty water pushing out of the inlets I knew there was a good chance that we would be wasting our time, but we didn’t have a plan C. We circled the area one time and settled on a spot to drop the anchor. With the anchor set, we started chumming and got the kite up. It didn’t take long for the action to heat up. We spend the next several hours catching big Spanish, small kings and 137 sharks. In the middle of the action we had a king in the low to mid 20’s greyhound on a kite bait and miss the hooks. This boosted our spirits and we went back to the grind. Finally around 11:30 “it” happened. Shortly after I dropped a blue fish back on a balloon rig, a big king grabbed the bait and headed straight offshore at a high rate of speed. The fish kept acting like he was going to slow down so I decided not to throw the poly ball right away. Mistake. Fish kept going and going and going. Finally, I asked Edward to throw the ball. He ran to the bow and at the moment he had the anchor line off of the cleat, the fish was gone. Not sure what I said at that exact moment but I’m pretty sure it is not appropriate for this report and I pray the boys never repeat my profanity filled rant. All fishermen know that empty feeling in your stomach that only losing a big fish can cause. It is a hole that can only be filled by catching another big one. As if on cue, the wind started blowing 25+ mph around noon. The boys and I decided it was time to call it quits. We got inside Shallotte inlet and decided we had better look at the fish in the bag and decide if we were going to make the run to Carolina beach. We were tired, hungry, soaking wet and wanted to go home. We made several calls and the consensus was that we needed to weigh in. The fish was 14.65 pounds and earned us a little check for the top Jr. Angler. Congrats to Barrett, Brant, Amy, Caroline and Brayden McMullan on their victory. Caroline and Brayden were really the top Jr anglers and they truly earned it.

Haha, good call Captain Rickey on the Natural Light. I have seen the shirt at the fishing center that states " To think like a fish, you have to drink like a fish!". There probably wasn't enough on the boat to calm stomachs in those seas!!

That's pretty. Funny rickey .. They didn't get that name for no reason .. They are professionals .. And a good competitive fishing team ..

"Sea P.A./OIFC East Coast Got Em On Recap" | Sea P.A. / OIFC | 07/15/13

Our team opted to fish Saturday which did not start out too bad - we had great bait form Friday thanks to Matt & Jack and found pogies fairly quick Saturday morning.  We had decided Friday evening to fish on the Carolina Beach side of the shoal for no real reason other than to go where no one else was considering.  Historically this area has produced some very nice fish and we felt like it could be our turn.  We cut through the shoal at an area called the slough and began fishing at the cucumber where we marked bait all through the water column as nice as I have seen all year but as has been our dilemma this year all we could muster was sharks.  After a coulple of hours we ventured on further to the 30/30 where we caught more sharks, a nice spanish and a dolphin.   At approximately 12 noon the ocean had gotten so impressive we decided to head back to our side of the shoal hoping the seas were a little less than what we had been encountering but at this point it was a mess everywhere and had basically become unfishable for us.  We were truly happy when we cleared the inlet and could relax a little bit.  I want to congratulate Brant, Barrett and the OIFC team for their showing and also Brian Aycock and the Hail Yeah team.  I also want to thank Wes & CW at Angler's marine for keeping our Cape Horn in such great condition.  Every team that fished this tournament today definitely earned their stripes.  Here's looking forward to the next one.

"east coast had em on " | Choice of Two / OIFC | 07/15/13

First off let me congratulate Brant,Barrett and crew of the oifc for their win in the East Coast Got Em On . Awesome fish in not so great conditions .

We team Choice of Two/Oifc had an upsetting day. We elected to fish on saturday. We headed to 85 ft of water where we had caught some nice fish at earlier in the week and when we arrived it was not the same clear water we were fishing 3 days prior. We saw a few other really good fishing teams out there with us but we wanted to make a move to try and find some better looking water .. Made a move offshore and then back inshore after a quick look at another spot. Ended up in 75 foot of water which looked a lot fishier 10 miles west of where we started.. AT 12;00 We had a smoker hit our port downrigger.. smoked the reel down several times nearly spooling it .. We got the fish up close enough to see that he was a 30+ lb fish that was lonnnng  and were almost within gaff range several times .. The big girl was stubborn and Eddy did exactly what he was supposed to do on the rod like always but as the fish was finally making her way back up to the boat a shark wanted it worse than we did and ate her head, half her body ,and her tail in a matter of seconds leaving us with 1/4 of a fish.. We were bummed for sure but put lines back out and immediately got a second chance the fish ran straight towards the boat and this time Ryan was on the rod and tightened down on the fish a little to try and get him to the boat  without getting eaten again .We got to see this fish too just below the boat about a 20lber which pulled the hooks on his final run when he got to the boat. WAS NOT OUR DAY...Once again congrats to team oifc for an awesome fish .... 20lber

Open Wide Fishing Team 07/15/2013

Corey, Hate to hear that for you guys. We ended up catching a few smaller fish and had a nice fish on but the team decided to "hurry" the fight so that we wouldn't be the last boat out during that storm and we broke it off, all from that spot where we saw all of you all at.

Sea P.A. 07/15/2013

I hate that for you Corey. It looks like it was a real nice fish. I second your comment about being glad to get home in one piece.

Team OIFC wins East Coast Got'em On King Classic. Capts Brant and Barrett with lady, Amy, and juniors Caroline and Brayden caught a 39.75 pound King Mackerel to win the annual Got'em On King Classic. The team caught their winning fish at 11:00am on a Ribbonfish, rigged and let out by Amy. Amy was letting the line out when the King took it. She engaged the reel, set up and then proceeded to angle the King in the 4-6' seas. Barrett did the gaff job and Brant drove the boat. Caroline and Brayden jumped up and down and cheered the team on. Seas built to 6+ foot by noon and the team called it quits by 1pm. They also boated a couple of nice Mahi and a Cobia. Thanks to team supporters: OIFC, Yellowfin, Yamaha, Ameratrail and Marine Service Center of Little River Capt. Brant McMullan OIFC
