"One Foggy..." | Tiberias - 22' | 01/24/12

Rudolph want you guide my boat today...Yesterday was was so foggy at times I could only see about 50yds. Oh well! I sure could hear my drag screaming. The redfish were a little bit easier to sneak up on with the gloomy conditions. Plus, with the approaching front their appetite was back in full swing. I managed to land 14 reds, most of them right in the middle of the slot around 23 inches. I also had 5 trout and one flounder to top the day off with this years first Carolina Slam. I can't stand it and will be back after them on Wednesday. Give me a call if you want to go! See ya on the water!

"BFT Update" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 01/20/12

This is an update on Blue Fin Tuna fishing, if you can figure it out.

Last updated: 1/20/2012
NMFS Closes BFT General Category (Commercial) January Fishery

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) closes the General category (commercial handgear) fishery for large medium and giant BFT (measuring 73 inches curved fork length or greater) effective 11:30 p.m. local time on January 22, 2012, until it reopens on June 1, 2012. Based on the best available BFT landings... information for the General category BFT fishery (i.e., 17 mt of the available 23.1 mt landed as of January 17), NMFS has determined that the General category January BFT subquota will be reached by January 22, 2012. Therefore, through May 31, 2012, fishing for, retaining, possessing, or landing large medium or giant BFT by persons aboard vessels permitted in the Atlantic Tunas General and HMS Charter/Headboat categories (while fishing commercially) must cease at 11:30 p.m. local time on January 22, 2012. The General category will reopen automatically on June 1, 2012, for the June through August subperiod. Limited catch and release is permissible as described below. The intent of this closure is to prevent overharvest of the General category January BFT subquota

"Inshore Report" | Tiberias - 22' | 01/17/12

It is typical for things to be a little slow this time of year, however; for the diehard angler, redfish and trout are still hanging in the backwaters. We are finding trout in deep water ranging from 8 to 15 feet using quarter ounce jigheads paired with chartreuse colored soft plastics. Redfish are scattered all throughout the shallow marsh grass right now. One day you may see hundreds on a flat, the next just a few in a shallow water pocket. The porpoises and weather patterns are keeping them on the move is my best guess. We decided to stay with the trout action yesterday landing double digit numbers, but only having six keepers. Still not a bad way to spend a winter day! See ya on the water!

"Correction" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 01/16/12

Mr. Jon White was kind enough to point out a transposing error I made on the final results of the OIFC Rodeo.

Mr. White won 1st place in the flounder division with a 6.9 lb flat fish.

My humble apologies.  Those who know me know this wasn't my 1st error and won't be my last.  I depend heavily on ya'll to keep me straight!

Wendell Barnett and Steve fished the Blackjack on Jan. 9th aboard the Empty Pockets.  The water was 72 degrees and the weather was spectacular.  They ended the day with 4 wahoo, the biggest was 75 lbs.  The guys also caught a sailfish.

Great day on the water and thanks for the report.

"Speck Check" | Tiberias - 22' | 01/11/12

Swinging weather patterns have the fish on the move...The redfish have been thick on the shallow flats, but spooky. I have pushed several schools of reds and even seen some trout hanging around the outer oyster bars. The water has been so clear that you can see the bottom in 8 feet of water at times. Spotting fish is very exciting, but can be aggrevating when they won't bite. Finally, I have had enough...a friend around the Southport area has been drilling the trout, so I went to check it out. If you don't mind a long boat ride the fish seem to be cooperating a little better in the Southport area. The water temperature seems to be holding about 3 to 4 degrees warmer and water color is a little darker making it easier to do a sneak. A good class of trout in the 2 to 4 pound range are biting a variety of soft plastics in bright color patterns. Even a flounder or two is still hanging around. Check it out! See ya on the water!

Wendall Barnett sent in these pictures from a stream trip he took on Jan. 9th. Looks like the wahoo bite is still pretty good out there. Some quality fish! Looks like a sailfish release as well.

"Skinny Water" | Get Busy | 01/08/12

Captains Brandon Sauls and Kyle Hughes took advantage of today's great weather to once again go on a fishn' mission in the backwaters of the S. Brunswick Islands.  Brandon said he saw the most fish he'd seen in a while.  If you can't afford to run off shore, the in shore bite is red hot.

"Somewhere N the Rocks" | Tiberias - 22' | 01/08/12

Gary Sheaff and his son stopped in yesterday to fuel up the boat. They were headed for the jetties even though reports showed slow action. The weather was gorgeous and who could pass up such a great day to be on the water! Gary called me back at the store within minutes of leaving, reporting that the bite was great. First three cast of the day produced a nice red and a beautiful trout. After ending a great day of fishing he sent us these fine pictures!

The fish are still hanging around. I fished Thursday afternoon spotting several redfish, but could only get three rat reds to bite. Fished Friday morning, again spotting several fish, reds, trout, and even black drum sunning themselves on the flats. Needless to say, I could not get them to buy anything I was selling. I will be back at it tomorrow regardless the weather. It is going to be tough to see fish with cloud cover and rain, but I know where some should be hanging out. See ya on the water!

"Beautiful Day" | Get Busy | 01/07/12

Kevin Sneed took advantage of a great Brunswick County day and slayed the trout.  Kevin said the bite wasn't as hot today as yesterday.  Meanwhile Bonecrusher Sauls and Marky-Mark hit the skinnies and got into the red drum.  Come on down and enjoy our winter (?).

Not to stir up any trouble, but I think Kevin has got the Bonecrusher's milk when it comes to trout fishing.  Just sayn'.
