"Blackjack" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 04/16/12

Pattie Hughes sent me these absolutely stunning action shots from William Froley Hughes, Billy Nobles and a couple of anglers ( I don't recognize) trip to the Blackjack aboard their 31' Yellowfin the "Bay Pirate" Saturday. They brought 5 mahi to the boat using Blue Water Candy Jags.  Not a bad way to start the season!

"New Video Service from OIFC" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 04/16/12

Many of you have gotten to know Terry Johnson, new OIFC staffer.  He came on board in March and has been working his way into the system.  Besides becoming an expert T-shirt folder, Terry has also been honing his video skills; taping fishing trips and editing them into short "video diaries" to chronicle the fishing day.  He has been practicing for a month now and his videos have been playing in the OIFC daily.  But now Terry is ready to take it to the big-time and I'm excited to now offer "Video Diaries" for charter customers.  If you come on board a charter fishing adventure with us you will have a choice to have your trip videoed, edited, posted to You Tube and copies sent to all fishing party members.  It is a great way to remember the trip and relive it until the next adventure.  Here is Terry's first "OIFC Video Diary" -- filmed last Friday with the Fulcher party - check it out, pretty cool.  It gives a good idea of how things operate on board an OIFC charter boat.  Great job Terry!

"Happy Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Williams" | Tiberias - 22' | 04/15/12

Congratulations! Today Mr. and Mrs. Williams celebrate their 12th wedding anniversary! Yesterday they started their celebration by taking a little fishing trip with us. As is should be, ladies first! Dorrie was the first to hook up and it was an over the slot red drum for South Carolina. We took a few pictures and released our first fish of the day to fight another day. Alan was next and he made quick work of another nice upper slot red. The bluefish started to take a toll on our bait and I am not a big fan on feeding the blues. We moved on out into the ocean looking for some action on the bottom. The black sea bass, blues, pinfish, and toadfish are thick. However, a few flounder and gray trout are in the mix. We kept very busy weeding through various fish until finally snagging some beautiful gray trout for supper. Thanks for fishing with us guys! See ya on the water!

Ok, I had a blast, and set 4 records.... The biggest fish, the smallest fish, the ugliest fish, and the most fish caught at 1 time. — with Alan Williams.

"Good Luck Capt. Zach" | Get Busy | 04/15/12

Capt. Zach Faulkner has gone on to try his hand on a Tugboat.  He had said he wanted a career on the salt water and so it begins. We at the OIFC wish Zach good luck and tight lines!

Zach text me early this morning and told me he'd be steaming by on the Island Express.  I loaded up my English Bulldog "Tugboat" and headed for the old Sunset Bridge to get some pics..Here they are.

PS..Zach said they let him run the boat from the Ocean Isle Marina to just past the OIB Bridge and he didn't even hit anything.  Good luck Bud!!

"New reef hotels with meaning." | Get Busy | 04/15/12

I've always said my final resting place would be with my friends fishing or diving around me. Well today I saw  Eternal Reefs placing reef balls on a shrimp boat. These reef balls contain ashes of loved ones to be added to the Jolly Mon reef tomorrow. A really great Idea WWW.ETERNALREEFS.COM  A boat out of Calabash will carry loved ones out to the site.

"The Sea Assault's Maiden N.C. Voyage" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 04/14/12

The Sea Assault's maiden NC voyage was today. This is a new 34 ft. Sea Vee owned by Lee Forbis, with the crew of Ned Garber, Bob Newell, and Web White. This wahoo fell for a pink skirted Capt Joe Shute lure on a planer rod in the prop wash at 100 /400 in 73 degree water . Also the crew boated 5 gaffer mahi, a Blackfin tuna, and a king.

What a way to introduce the SeeVee to the N.C. waters.  Thanks for the report Bob.

"Inshore this Week" | Tiberias - 22' | 04/13/12

The flounder are still biting, black drum nippling a bit, did not really target the trout, and the red drum have been stubborn. Mr. and Mrs. Heffernan allowed me to take them and there 4 precious kids fishing yesterday. Conditions were cool and windy. We started in a 15 to 20kts NW wind and ended with a 10 to 15kts SW wind. No doubt there were times the wind was slack and conditions were absolutely beautiful! We were using premium OIFC mud minnows and frozen shrimp for our primary bait. I got us anchored up and set out a nice spread. Not much was happening, so I started tossing the artifcials a bit. Mr. Heffernan also started to toss the jig a bit. With all that live fresh bait sitting around our first flounder fell for a soft plastic. Mr. Heffernan drilled a 13" flounder on the 4" Bass Assassin albino ghost. We managed to pick up a few more flounder and got a black drum on the shrimp. The table was set, keeper flounder, black drum, and about a dozen of keeper blue crabs. Mmm..mmm...good! See ya on the water!

"Gulf Stream fever outbreak" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 04/13/12

It's been years since I've seen a break out of gulf stream fever like is going on today. Looks like tomorrow we will need a traffic cop out there as the entire world appears to be going to the gulf stream tomorrow. The wahoo bite has been good, the weather looks perfect[should be flat in the morning and then a southeast sea breeze/tail wind 10-15 in the afternoon. We have both Cat boats out there today, so stay tuned, when they come in we will post where they fished and what they found. Great to see so many folks getting back to fishing. Our spring gulf stream season is not to be missed. Good luck to all tomorrow.

"OIFC World Cat report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 04/13/12

It was a tough day, required lots of patience- BUT we stuck with it and ended up pretty well. There were scattered wahoo, blackfin and dolphin in 170-220. We spent most of the day in that range. At around 2 Steele and OC called from the Carolina Cat and reported some action in 140ft. I made a turn inshore and at 2:30 in 150' we hit a 6-header of 10-15 pound Mahi. We gathered ourselves and reset and caught a Wahoo. For the finally we pulled up and deployed a few live baits and caught a couple Kings. Total tally ended at 2 Wahoo, 1 Blackfin, 7 Mahi and a King. We missed 3 other Wahoo. If u are goin Saturday I'd suggest working 140-150' inshore of Black Jack to inshore of Steeples. Good luck!
