"Ty and Pat" | Tiberias - 22' | 05/25/12

I had the great priviledge in taking Ty and Pat out fishing today. We started off pretty quickly landing several reds in the lower slot 19 to 22 inches. The bite slowed on the redfish, so we got after the flounder. The flounder were suprisingly a little bit more stubborn that I would have expected today. We did find two nice keepers for lunch. The best excitement was again the monster bluefish. We had three opportunities to land another 10lb+ bluefish today. The first one made several strong runs...Pat managed to stick with it and get the monster boatside. The bluefish made several more burst just out of reach of the dip net. I made two attempts to net the fish, but both times he was able to jump over the net. The next hard head shake and the line was cut. Ty hooked up almost immediately after us missing that fish. Ty's fish ran off some serious line as it was riding the swift current. After about 100yds. the line finally was cut. I changed some rigs over to wire and set some large baits out. We hooked up! Pat was back on the rod...she battled with the fish for a bit...the fish was headed right at us and staying deep...then straight up out of the water. HUGE BLUEFISH! He spit the hook at us. Dang it! Wow! It sure was exciting, but a picture sure would have been nice. We will get'em next time. I enjoyed fishing with Ty and Pat today. Thanks for fishing with us! See ya on the water!

"Memorial weekend fishing/weather report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 05/24/12

It looks like the weekend will see north/northeast winds high enough to discourage offshore fishing for the weekend. Thats the bad news; the good news is the pogies have arrived on the beach and at Shallotte Inlet both directions. What this offers up is a all out assault on beach King/Cobia fishing this weekend. It should be fishable within couple miles of the beach as our islands face south, thus protected from a northerly wind. It will be flat right on the beach, and spots like Yaupon, Lockwood ledges, Milliken ledges should produce kings and or cobia. Also try live baiting around the pogy schools for kings or spanish/blues trolling. We will re-stock the Jolly Mon Reef AR460 feeding station with fresh carcassas so that also is worth a shot. Looks like it will be a bluebird spring Carolina coastal weekend, just perfect for beach king fishing.

"warming up" | Get Busy | 05/24/12

The fishing is starting to heat up. The rains of last week muddied up the waters but things are about to clear up. The flounder bite is steady around the inlets at times of high tide. Low tide has been the time to target the redfish. It has been a great week at OIB. Here is a mixed bag of pix from this week.

"1st Red" | Get Busy | 05/24/12

Below is a picture of Geoffrey Kotlarsic with his first redfish.  He caught it within 500 yards of the OIFC. Caught on a live pogy with a Carolina Rig, on a kayak. We had a couple break offs but this one managed to find his way to the house. This 25" fish pulled this fella's kayak all over the place. Its amazing how strong a 6# redfish is when you are in a kayak. Geoffrey just caught his first flounder just 2 weeks ago. This guy is hooked!

Thanks to Tim Gallimore for the report and the picture.

"2 Big Cobia" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 05/24/12

Jim Bowen sent this report in of a 36 and 40 lb cobia caught on the CutN'Loose Captained by David Cutler in 60 ft. of water.  They got one hooked out of a school of 8-10.  When this one came by the boat they pitched a bait.  After about 45 minutes they had two very nice cobia in the boat.

Wee appreciated the report Jim.

"Sticking With It" | Tiberias - 22' | 05/24/12

The redfish bite was on fire  the first part of the week, but has slowed just a bit. The flounder bite continues to be what you can count on right now. Stick around long enough in the right spot and a monster bluefish might just show up. We tried for redfish again this morning, but tide was much higher than I anticipated. We started picking through the flounder finding three nice keepers for lunch. Things are surely going to pick up as the moon grows. Another tropical storm is also out there stirring things up and hopefully pushing more fish inshore. Sometimes you just never now what you might catch when a storm is approaching. Special thanks to Leth, Ethan, Michael, Felix, and Mr. Atkins for fishing with us this week. See ya on the water!

"Ocean Conditions" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 05/23/12

At 7:44 am the Carolina Cat reported "steep conditions".  He was going to the Stream but changed plans.  In shore there is NO wind, which has caused the no-see-ums to chew on people.

The World Cat reported thick bait at Tubbs Inlet.

"Old Blue" | Tiberias - 22' | 05/22/12

Leth and Ethan joined me for another day of fishing. We started out about 8am this morning working the last bit of incoming tide. We took a bass fishing approach first thing this morning working the edges of the grass. We had a few bluefish cut us off and landed some nice flounder. We changed gears to live bait looking for the redfish. We caught a couple more flounder and then old blue showed up. Leth hooked up for just a few seconds. Ethan hooks up for a few seconds. I hook up and again line was cut before passing the rod. I made some adjustments to leader materails and was ready for some action. Ethan hooks up hard! Fish on! Ethan lands a solid 8 or 9 pound bluefish despite having fluorocarbon leader. Leth hooks up hard on my homemade wire leader. My wire must not have been long enough, after a short tug of war the leader was cut just about the wire. We hung around for a few more minutes hoping that either the blues would give us another chance or a redfish would show up. The bite just shut down there....we made a move. We got into the toadfish...small flounder....Leth hooks up hard...good fight...hooks pulled! Ethan's rod doubles over...game on! Ethan does an awesome job angling a solid 28" red to the boat. Quick picture and release. We ended the day with Leth landing a nice red of her own. Thank you guys for fishing with us! See ya on the water!

"Scouting Report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 05/21/12

Captain Jeff, 1st Mate Camdyn and I took the "Do Work" Contender on a scouting/spanish/blue fish run yesterday.  We spotted birds working around the Shallotte Inlet, the Holden Beach Bridge and the "high hill".  While scouting we pulled a couple of 00 Clarke Spoons and Camdyn boated several blue fish.

The ocean got bumpy and Camdyn needed a nap in the Ocean Tamer Bean Bag so we returned to the OIFC.  On the trip back in we saw two guys killing the spanish site casting.  Now that's fun!

Bottom line, the bait is here and there have been some kings caught at the Youpon Reef.  So the Jolly Mon ought to be right on time.  Camdyn and Caroline are honing their fishing skills so we need some Jr. Anglers to try to knock them down a notch.

"Jolly Mon AR460 feeding station" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 05/21/12

Last week I reported the Jolly Mon AR460 feeding station mysteriously sunk following the deposit we made of 300lbs+ of fish carcasses plus 2 bricks. I went on a rescue mission today and can report the feeding station has mysteriously re-surfaced. It is still loaded with fish carcasses, putting out a great slick. Apparently something toothy took a bite out of it, and now seabass are swimming in and out of the hole. I trolled around it for a few laps and caught several bluefish. We will replenish as soon as our charter boats do trips this week. I am going to go ahead and forecast the Jolly Mon King Tournament will be won at Jolly Mon Reef!

"Inshore Report" | Tiberias - 22' | 05/19/12

The conditions have been less than favorable for fair weather fishermen. My crew yesterday was up for the challenge regardless the conditions. The wind and current was so strong at times, using the trolling motor in combination with my anchor would not hold our position. We managed to land a few short flounder, but had quite a few bites. The conditions were making it tough to feel the bite. I decided to change gears and see if the redfish would cooperate. We worked the docks along the Northern side of the waterway because they were a little more protected from the North East wind. The bite started off slow...but then the teacher showed up and school was in session. We worked on several redfish in the lower slot around 18 to 22 inches. My crew was all about catch and release, so those fish are there for our future enjoyment! Ethan, 15 years old, landed our best fish of the day. A nice 26 inch redfish that was weighed in, picture taken, and released at dockside. I will be fishing with  Ethan and Leth again on Tuesday. I hope the fishing stays the same and the weather gives us a break. Pictured below is Ethan, Leth, and Capt. Casey Reeves with our best redfish of the day weighing in at 6.4 pounds. Thank you guys for fishing with us! See ya on the water!
