"Fall Brawl This Weekend" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 11/01/12

After being rescheduled due to Sandy, the Fall Brawl King Classic will take place this weekend, November 2-4.  The King Mackerel tournament will be based from the Ocean Isle Fishing Center and as always, provide a great atmosphere for fishing families.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
Friday, November 2nd
12pm-9pm: On-site registration at OIFC
6pm: Complimentary dinner by Guy C. Lee of Shallotte
7pm: Capt. Meeting
8pm: Spot Derby
11:59pm: On-line registration closes

Saturday, November 3rd (optional fish day)
7am: Lines in
2pm: Scales open
5pm: Weigh-in line closes

Sunday, November 4th (optional fish day)
7am: Lines in
2pm: Scales open
5pm: Weigh-in line closes
7pm: Oyster Roast & Awards ceremony

As for the fishing, this will not be a typical Fall Brawl which provides great beach fishing.  Hurricane Sandy has altered that schedule.  Beach waters are now in the mid 60's and are very stirred up.  Fishermen will need to travel to at least the 65' depth range, if not further to find warmer and cleaner water.  It is likely Kings will be holding in the vicinity of the Frying Pan Tower and Navy wrecks.  Closer in spots such as the Shark Hole, Jungle, Horse Shoe and Atlantic Ledge may also produce.  This year's Fall Brawl is definitely up for grabs.  The strong winds will keep fishermen near shore until the weekend, which means very little scouting will be done.  One thing I do believe is that whoever finds the Kings will find them in big numbers and find them very hungry.  See you at the Fall Brawl........  Capt. Brant McMullan

"Clear 60 Degree Water =" | Tiberias - 22' | 10/31/12

Sandy's initial passing had very little effect on us here at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. The winds stayed mostly out of a Northerly direction not stirring up the beach. The jet stream on the other hand that steered Sandy North of us brought on a Westerly wind that has chopped up the surf. Despite both occurrences we have faired extremely well and the fishing has survived. Keep folks to the North of us in your prayers as Sandy did not show them the kindness she showed us. I fished on Wednesday 10/24/12 for just a few hours around midday to see if I could find a few trout. The trout have started to get into their late fall pattern. Here is a video of what I found before Sandy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6UYzNGKsSY&list=UUkSpU7T2RycHDa2Idh1iSzA&index=1&feature=plcp Today Jack and Ned joined me for a half day of backwater fishing. Suprisingly the water clarity was better than before Sandy's passing. I started to get confident that we would find some fish today. Water temperature has dropped from 68 to 60 in just a few days. That is the right temperature for some serious trout action, but it was a quick drop. Have the fish had time to adjust? We got our answer with in the first 10 minutes of the trip as three keepers were put into the livewell. I can't say it was an all out bite, but we ended the day with our limit of 4 fish a piece. The conditions are only going to improve from here and expectations are high. I would expect the Kings are not going to be far from where we left them either. Lighthouse Rocks and Shark Hole areas should be a good place to start if you are fishing the Fall Brawl. Stay tuned for updates on conditions. I am sure someone will be doing a little recon to check out the water clarity soon. See ya on the water!

"Fall Brawl fish forecast" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/30/12

The weather is trying real hard to settle down and we are encouraged it will in time for the Fall Brawl. It looks like a weak front will pass thru Friday getting us back to the north winds we need in order to have protection for our south facing beaches. It will be flat on our beaches with a north wind, which is exactly where the Kings should be. There were reports this week of Kings at piers on the north side of the Cape Fear river so apparently they are still here. As the weather settles out, hopefully the late October[early November] King bite will explode right at Shallotte Inlet. The key to fishing this weekend will be to find clear water. It is likely water in the Myrtle Beach Rocks area or on the east side of the Cape Fear will be the clearest water. Also water in the river channel will clear up first due to the strong tidal flow in the river thus bringing Lighthouse rocks into play. Not sure if the offshore water will be milked up[Shark Hole/Jungle]. Sunday looks to be the lightest winds as it should lay out Saturday night. Standby for more info as we get it.

"She's a mullet blow" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/28/12

To be sure, this is a full fledged mullet blow we're having, and in an effort to see something good out of it in terms of the fishing world after it's over, here's what I see:

-our winds have mostly been northerly so our waters hopefully won't be as stirred up as waters on otherside of Frying Pan Shoals that is not protected by north wind like our waters are

-the winds will stay out of the north this week and begin laying out Thursday. The weekend looks great with lite northerly winds saturday going to lite southeasterly winds Sunday

-if the water is "hurricane stirred", it will clear up first in the river channel as the tidal flow is so strong it will cleanse itself quickly

-any spots that have been hiding out in Pamilico or Albermarle Sounds should have been blown south so they are right outside our door

-the water temp was in the low 70's before the storm so hopefully it will still be warm enough for the kings to be on the beach after the spots and mullets for the Fall Brawl next weekend. If it has cooled, the kings should be at the 90's or Lighthouse Rocks. We'll keep an eye on conditions this week and keep everyone informed, but to be sure, after it calms down, the fish should be hungrey.

"Pre Sandy" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/27/12

Capt. Jeff Beck of the OIFC/Do Work, took a couple of friends out for a few hours of fun fishing.  They said the mullet and blues were thick at Hogs Inlet and the pogies were just off the beach at OIB.

Aboard the OIFC/Do Work were Jon Hayes, Douglas Bowman and Tylor Watson all of the Taylorsville area.  Tyler was in charge of chumming.

"Shark Hole" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/24/12

There has been a decent bite last few days at Shark Hole. Most boats catching a hand full of kings, mostly in the teenager range. It wasn't quite as good today as yesterday afternoon. Seems to be a morning bite and then a afternoon bite. Plenty of pogies along the beach and also lots of mullet showing. After the storm passes, expect the spots to be here, and with them should be a King beach bite[just in time for rescheduled Fall Brawl Nov 2-4].

"Fall Brawl- RESCHEDULED" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/23/12

The 2012 Fall Brawl is rescheduled until Nov 2-4.  The schedule of events will go on as normal, just one week later.
A closer look at the forecast reveals that in fact there is some sort of divine force that is driving the storms our way.  The fishing weather has been nothing short of amazing for a good 6 weeks.  And now, somehow, the weather is going to crap for the 2 days it is scheduled.  2 days before;great.  2 days after; great.  What the heck?
Stay tuned to the OIFC site for Fall Brawl updates.

"Can't Decide" | Tiberias - 22' | 10/23/12

The redfish bite continues to show consistent results in most places. We have caught them in all sizes, 16 to 17 inchers, slot fish 21 to 25 inches, and well over the slot from 28 inches to 45 inches. We were catching black drum very consistently with live shrimp, but the shrimp have started to get scarce. Flounder have been hard to find, but some large ones are out there. Looking for the speckled trout to show up anyday now. The water temp is creeping down into the 60's and the bite should get cranked up soon. The next two days are light and variable winds, but I can't decide wether to fish or hunt. I can only imagine that the fishing is going to be great, but the deer are getting geared up for the rut. I guess it is going to be hunting in the morning and fishing in the afternoon. I love this time of year! See ya on the water or in the woods!
