"Wahoos in January" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 01/06/13

Had an opportunity to get offshore on Saturday, with close friends Mike Lappin, Brad Mulahy and Bill Gahagan aboard Mikes 34 Yellowfin, the Over Equipped.  Headed offshore in less than ideal weather conditions, yes the weather man missed again.  Must have been a lot of cabin fever because lots of boats toughed it out in 3-5 foot seas with 15+ kt winds to get offshore.  We pointed the Over Equipped in the direction of the 100/400 where we had seen a really nice body of warm water.  The water was right where it was supposed to be with tons of suspended bait balls trapped along the edge of water we were fishing.  The fishing turned out to be slow but steady with action from Wahoo's, Tuna's and Bonitas.  Most of our bites came on the Planer rod and the cedar plug on the shotgun.  Early afternoon, the wind finally layed down and around 3, we decided to head towards home but put out the High Speed Lures to give it one more shot on the way in.  About 10 minutes after deploying the lures, one of the Tiagra 50's sounded as if it was going to explode... WAHOO on... There is something incredible about having a Wahoo bite a lure that is being pulled through the water at 15 kts.  It never gets old.  Shortly after boating that fish, we pulled them in and cruised home at a comfy 42 kts... Final count for the day was 4 wahoos, 1 big fat Blackfin and 8 or 9 bonitas.  Pretty awesome to be able to enjoy fishing offshore in January. If the weather window is there, my advice is, go fishing. Its worth your time out there. Pics attached are of 3 of the Wahoos and dinner tonight... I got some video and will edit/post on our youtube page very soon.

The in shore bite is still on, live bait or artificials....the trout and drum are hitting it all.  All you have to do is get out there and get after them.

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) -- A commercial fisherman has died after getting caught in a reel of nets on his boat in Brunswick County. The emergency call came in just after 11 a.m.

Wildlife officers say Jeremy Blair Myers, 34, of Wilmington, put out from Southport today and was fishing for menhaden and sea mullet when it happened. Someone tried to get him out of the netting, but could not save him before more help could arrive.

Myers's body was brought back to shore at Coast Guard Station Oak Island

"MILLION DOLLAR BLUEFIN TUNA" | Real-Time Update | 01/05/13

BELIEVE IT OR NOT ... Mr. Bob Smith, Retired Federal Express Sales Representative and Sanford, N.C. resident, called into the OIFC today with this new revelation of the phenomenal Bluefin Tuna market price in Tokyo, Japan (January 5, 2013). It was news to me, and thought everyone might want to also be so informed as to why Sushi is so expensive these days! Thanks Bob. "Bluefin tuna sells for record $1.76M in Tokyo" Winning bidder Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura Co., poses with a bluefin tuna in front of his Sushi Zanmai restaurant near Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013. The bluefin tuna caught off northeastern Japan fetched a record 155.40 million yen, or about $1,763,000, in the first auction of the year at the fish market. The tuna was caught off Oma in Aomori prefecture. "Playing with the Camera" | Tiberias - 22' | 01/02/13

Here is an underwater video of redfish I have been watching the last few days. I probably saw 50+ fish in three different schools today. As you can see in the video some bigger fish are mixed in with the smaller ones. These fish are very spooky as they are in less than 2 feet of water. I actually had 25 minutes of video, but  got mostly mud boils as they spooked from seeing the camera I guess. I  will continue to modify my efforts. Today was cloudy, so I will give it another shot when the sun comes out. See ya on the water!

"Warm Breeze" | Tiberias - 22' | 01/01/13

Jimmy that fished with me earlier this year sends a warm breeze our way.

Sure Jacob go ahead and post the fishing photos! We caught 9 Bone Fish and two Mangrove Snapper. The largest Bones where 7 and 11 pounds and I never felt that I was ever going to get the fish to the boat at either time, Ethan boated 5 Bones all before I landed my first one. Needless to say I was starting to wonder if I was ever going to get on the board. I wish you, family and the rest of the good folks at the OIFC a Happy and Healthy New Year.

"Back on the Water" | Tiberias - 22' | 12/31/12

I have been absent from the fishing scene since December 5th. My boat's motor started to signal an overheating issue. I quickly replaced the thermostats on both port and starboard sides. Ran the boat only to get the same alarm. Move on to the water impeller. During my inspection of the lower unit and connecting parts I found some more serious issues. I found several cracks in the exhaust housing and the tuner had also seperated from the lower bracket. Needless to say some long overdue tender love and care needed for the motor. I have replaced all gaskets, housing, plugs, filter, gear lube, etc...Motor is ready to roll.

Itching to get on the water today. Beautiful day! I got snagged...My wife's dad stopped in for a visit and delayed my departure. After his visit my wife dragged me grocery shopping to the dreaded Wal-mart. Could the lines be any longer?! Finally, 4pm home at last. Grabbing gear and heading out the door. Awwwh!!! It feels good to be back on the water. I quickly looked for live bait, but no such luck. I pulled out the artificials and went to work. Picked off a few red drum then a trout. Moved further back into the shallows and found a large school of small reds. Picked off a couple more trout. I did not hang Mr. Big today, but had a blast catching 15 or more reds and 3 trout. I love it! See ya on the water!

"Tournament Winning Bait" | Get Busy | 12/30/12

Everyone fished the Trout Tournament with live shrimp.  Brandon and Clay caught and released about 20 red drum.  Capt. Jeff Williamson caught the second place trout and a boat load of black drum.  The winners, Robbie Hughes and Brian Richard caught over a dozen trout, including the winning trout, fishing right beside everyone else.  The difference?  They were using Salt Water Assassin Sea Shad with a 1/4 oz jig head.
