It's all Lee's ({Timberlake} fault--the reason we didn't catch any wahoo or tuna yesterday. Serious offshore fishermen will note the brand of sunblock that he had on the boat. Lucky we didn't sink!

Those are some really big Blackfin. Nice catch. I did not get any reports of Blackfin. Where did you catch those?

"Great end to a busy week." | OIFC | 03/30/13

It has been quite a week.  The Dolphin/Wahoo meeting took place in Charleston on Wednesday as scheduled and I am still sifting through the details.  More on that issue to follow...

In the meantime, I got a chance to go fishing with my two buddies Sammy and Daniel Macdonald, two brothers from Weaverville, NC.  Joining us on the trip were their mother, Woodeane Macdonald, and longtime fixture on the Brunswick County fishing scene, Stephen "Puddin" Hunter.  With a great weather forecast, this was the first trip offshore for Sammy and Daniel.

Finding 63 degree water at the Steeples, we started jigging immediately, and didn't really stop until we had thoroughly demolished a Saragosa 14000.  The bite started slow, but when it turned on, it was pretty consistent action for the rest of the day.  Several different species were brought boatside, and we sacrificed a LOT of tackle to some fish that just weren't meant to be caught.  Sammy and Daniel showed a real aptitude for the fishing we were doing.  Can't wait to go fishing with these two again when the weather gets warmer and the dolphinfish are thick!  Won't be long...

"Pre-Rodeo Fishing" | Do Work / OIFC | 03/30/13

Brandon Sauls push polled his way to the reds today.  He said he caught and released a total of seven.  I especially like it when they are released to fight another day.  I'm sure he's warming up for 2013 edition of the OIFC Year Around Rodeo.

By the way, if you haven't picked up your trophy and money, both are ready at the OIFC

There is no better sleeping thn on a boat headed out, or there, or returning for that matter.

"Started Off Slow and Tapered Off..." | Tiberias - 22' | 03/30/13

The Full moon this morning had the tide way back in the grass. The winds were light enough to search out the schools of reds in the shallow grass. We headed way back into the grass looking for any signs of life. No mullet, no reds, no trout, no life on this planet...we were down by 10 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning looking for a miracle. Dragging the boat over one sand bar to the next testing each little pot hole with live mud minnows. I believe I saw that rod tip jump a bit there. Go down baby, please go down! Nothing...we pulled in both lines to check for signs of a bite. Cabbage! Green cabbage is everywhere! We got the lines reset, the rod tip was bouncing again with just a few seconds in the water. Thats him! No doubt! Bust'em! Nicholos drags our first lower slot red to the boat. He's on base...Kerry is up to bat...hard swing and he connects...its way back, way back...close to foul territory...get'em out of the pilings...Home run baby! Kerry lands a solid 25 inch brute! We landed a few more lower slot reds and headed for the dock. I'll bet Kerry is still given them fellows a hard time about his awesome angling skills. Hey! We all had fun and everyone did a great job angling. I don't think we lost any solid hook ups today. A huge thanks to Chris, Kerry and Nicholos for getting out on the water with me this morning! See ya on the water!

Thanks Chris!

You are right about Kerry, he won't stop talking about his angling skills. If you have never gone out with Capt. Jacob you have to try it. He knows his stuff and will do whatever it takes to find the fish.

"Spring Fever" | Do Work / OIFC | 03/29/13

If today didn't give me Spring Fever, nothing will.  It was nice to just sit around the OIFC and watch all the boats come in for fuel as they prep for their offshore adventures tomorrow.  Watching the kids run and play in the grass as the dogs ran along with them.  What's gonna make it worse is when all the boats return tomorrow with their catch form their offshore adventure.  Make plans to be at the OIFC docks tomorrow evening to see what comes in, I promise that I will have my crew there.

Those pesky "endangered" sea bass are as thick as fleas on a dog's back. I'd love to see the scientific study the government did.

"Full Moon Trout" | Do Work / OIFC | 03/28/13

Brian Richard of OIB caught the two nice 4.5 and 5 lb trout in the Shallotte River.  Brian was using 1/4 oz jig heads and grubs.

Thank for the report Brian.

Remember, the Rodeo fires up the 1st of April.  These two trout would have been contenders.
