"east coast had em on " | Choice of Two / OIFC | 07/15/13

First off let me congratulate Brant,Barrett and crew of the oifc for their win in the East Coast Got Em On . Awesome fish in not so great conditions .

We team Choice of Two/Oifc had an upsetting day. We elected to fish on saturday. We headed to 85 ft of water where we had caught some nice fish at earlier in the week and when we arrived it was not the same clear water we were fishing 3 days prior. We saw a few other really good fishing teams out there with us but we wanted to make a move to try and find some better looking water .. Made a move offshore and then back inshore after a quick look at another spot. Ended up in 75 foot of water which looked a lot fishier 10 miles west of where we started.. AT 12;00 We had a smoker hit our port downrigger.. smoked the reel down several times nearly spooling it .. We got the fish up close enough to see that he was a 30+ lb fish that was lonnnng  and were almost within gaff range several times .. The big girl was stubborn and Eddy did exactly what he was supposed to do on the rod like always but as the fish was finally making her way back up to the boat a shark wanted it worse than we did and ate her head, half her body ,and her tail in a matter of seconds leaving us with 1/4 of a fish.. We were bummed for sure but put lines back out and immediately got a second chance the fish ran straight towards the boat and this time Ryan was on the rod and tightened down on the fish a little to try and get him to the boat  without getting eaten again .We got to see this fish too just below the boat about a 20lber which pulled the hooks on his final run when he got to the boat. WAS NOT OUR DAY...Once again congrats to team oifc for an awesome fish .... 20lber

Ive been down that road before but ive never seen one that tore up! Im sure youll get her next time!

Open Wide Fishing Team 07/15/2013

Corey, Hate to hear that for you guys. We ended up catching a few smaller fish and had a nice fish on but the team decided to "hurry" the fight so that we wouldn't be the last boat out during that storm and we broke it off, all from that spot where we saw all of you all at.

Sea P.A. 07/15/2013

I hate that for you Corey. It looks like it was a real nice fish. I second your comment about being glad to get home in one piece.

Corey 07/15/2013

You and I both Tim .. I was just glad to get home in one piece myself

Team Beeracuda 07/15/2013

That would have been a slab!!! I would have love to seen that thing at the scales.

Team OIFC wins East Coast Got'em On King Classic. Capts Brant and Barrett with lady, Amy, and juniors Caroline and Brayden caught a 39.75 pound King Mackerel to win the annual Got'em On King Classic. The team caught their winning fish at 11:00am on a Ribbonfish, rigged and let out by Amy. Amy was letting the line out when the King took it. She engaged the reel, set up and then proceeded to angle the King in the 4-6' seas. Barrett did the gaff job and Brant drove the boat. Caroline and Brayden jumped up and down and cheered the team on. Seas built to 6+ foot by noon and the team called it quits by 1pm. They also boated a couple of nice Mahi and a Cobia. Thanks to team supporters: OIFC, Yellowfin, Yamaha, Ameratrail and Marine Service Center of Little River Capt. Brant McMullan OIFC

"Inshore slam,triple theat" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 07/13/13

I had the pleasure of fishing with Mike Campbell and his daughters Morgan and Brooke out of Wilmington NC this past week. This girls are are going to put a lot of gray hairs on Mikes head, not for the reason you're thinking. They have fishing skills. We started the morning floating live shrimp on the rising tide. Moved on to Tubbs Inlet for some flounder fishing. As the day heated up so did the fishing. We battled some really nice redfish to round out an inshore slam.

"freshwater blues" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 07/13/13

Despite all the rain we've had this month the fishing has'nt been bad. When they deside to eat they eat. Being in the right place at the right time can be tons of fun. Floating live shrimp down an oyster bar or bait shrimp in the middle of a creek for black drum provided lots of action for mine and Jacobs customers. In my seminars I preach about keeping blinders off about caring only the bait you caught them on yesterday.  I was throwing live shrimp and mullet minnows at a school of redfish. I dipped into the back livewell and had 8 mud minnows left. They ate every one, go figure. practice what you preach I guess.

"Got'em On King Classic- UPDATE" | OIFC | 07/12/13

Got'em On King Classic changed to EITHER Saturday or Sunday format-- pick your day.  Registration closes tonight at 11pm and you must declare by then.  They will have entertainment as planned on Saturday evening and weigh and awards schedule Sunday is the same as was originally planned for Saturday.  Please help to spread the word.  I'll hope to see you at the weigh-in.

The annual Got'em On King Classic tournament is this weekend and Mother Nature AND NOAA forecasting is not being kind -- both of them have been very wishy washy.

The tournament director of the event has been very diligent in trying to talk to fishermen to discusss opinions and options.  It can't always be a pretty picture, but the show must go on.  If  they reschedule, what are the chances the conditions are worse?  Based on what I see, they could be a lot worse and then you are faced with a bigger problem.  Good luck to all and be safe.

"Black Dog" | Do Work / OIFC | 07/10/13

Bob Newell sent us this report:

//We had a good crew for Sunday, Ian Ballantyne and Will Michalove aboard, bumped our way out to the 100/400, found the break of water changing from blended to blue around 160 feet and a fair amount of bait. Right short exploded with a big mahi on the Lil Stubby lure and after a nice 10-15 minute fight we brought the bull to the boat for gaff, only to be disappointed when the 100 pound leader broke off and the fish got away with a gaff hole in his back, 30-35 pound fish. Later we were rewarded with this teenager cow, she also bit a Lil Stubby, and finally at 2:00 pm another big strike on the blue/ white Lil Stubby, brought the fish to the boat where yours truly planted the gaff pulled him up over the gunnel and when I turned the handle to plant him in the box the gaff hook backed right out, and back to the water he went immediately snapping the leader . So the day was both rewarding and disappointing, we laughed that we were "tag and release old growth dolphinfish" that's about the only thing that saved us from crying in our beers! These were 2 "rodeo leader" class fish and they are still out there! Beautiful day, great to see blue water and get out of the dirty tea colored water we saw as far as 25 miles offshore . No billfish seen but we spent a fair amount if the mid day over the 100 fathom break dragging plugs and some dink baits rigged in circle hooks for whitey or the sail we hoped to find. Bob

Again thanks for the report Bob & thank you to everyone who sends them in and the readers who enjoy out Fishing Report.  If you have a report with picures please send them to me at sunset69@atmc.net

"Got'em" | Real-Time Update | 07/09/13

Yesterday Captain Brad and myself started our day by catching "turbo" pogies just outside the inlet. After filling all three live wells in the Carolina Cat we pushed offshore around twenty miles in calm seas to an area just west of the shark hole. We put out our spread and started working the area with little result other than a few dog sharks. We then decided to get back on plane and ride out a few more miles to 75 feet of water. The water looked much better in this range and we were marking good bait in the area so we worked the area pretty hard. We soon found out what was being attracted by the large bait schools when we got our first bite. Soon after the reel began to sing that beautiful tune we all love so much the image of a 20 pound barracuda appeared from the water as he flew through the air behind the boat. After doing battle with a few of these we chose to push on out to 85 feet of water. The second bait in the water there got inhaled by a hungry amberjack and it was on for the next two hours! The school of jacks came to the surface and it was literally like fishing in ripley's aquarium. We caught them at will along with a nice cobia that came up by the boat to see what was going on. Once everyone had enough of the jacks we moved back inshore some in search of a king mackerel to hang out in the fish box with our other victims. We rode back in to an area in 70 feet of water and redeployed our turbo pogey spread. A short while later the downrigger set at 45 feet alarmed that it had a visitor. After a short battle we saw the flashy image of a kingfish roll up by the boat. As a last ditch effort the fish darted under the boat and was able to free himself. After that it was time to head back to the dock. I would like to thank our crew from yesterday. They were great folks and did a great job fighting those big fish.
