Amy and I are picking up new 39 Yellowfin and took the boat out this AM for a shakedown and test run before we head back to North Carolina with it. We did grab a couple of rods and found some great Kingfish and Blackfin Tuna action outside the Tampa ship channel. Capt. Brant McMullan

MICHAEL ADKINS 05/04/2016

Coming down this weekend for 2 weeks. What is working best for the trout right now?

"Recent bite and happenings" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 05/02/16

With folks coming out of their winter haunts and fishermen eager to hear a reel scream, calm hasn’t been the word to describe the atmosphere at the OIFC here recently. The gulf stream fishing hit a second gear this past weekend (4/29-5/1) as multiple boats littered the dock with impressive catches of mahi-mahi, blackfin tuna and even a few wahoo. Then in the 25-40-mile range, there were quite a few boats had success with schoolie kings and some cobia here and there. I’ve received multiple reports that there was a decent bite around the Atlantic ledge and the Bill Perry reef this past weekend as well. Hopefully the forecasted warmer weather for this week will bring a larger body of fish closer to local favorite spots such as the shark hole, Christinas ledge, and the 390/390. Typically, this action cranks up around the third or fourth week in May yet with how warm the weather has been, just about anything is possible.

In addition to the ongoing fishing buzz, don’t forget to enter the Far Out Shootout as well as the Cobia Clash. With how hot the bite has been near the stream lately and how many cobia have been caught, it’ll be interesting to see what weights are brought to the scales in both these tournaments. To enter online or print out an entry form for both these events, visit the two links below.

Jolly Mon VIP – The entry deadline has officially passed for those who have qualified. This evening I will be sending out invitations to those who will be selected from the waitlist to fill up the rest of the 60 boat field.

Below are pictures from the past two weeks of Gulf Stream fishing. From left to right is Youseff Wahba with a blackfin tuna and a wahoo. The second to last picture is Jacob Raynor with a mahi mahi and the last one is Jacob Raynor, Meaghan Keenoy, and Devrin Avant with their catch from (4/30).

"Fire Stream" | Do Work / OIFC | 05/01/16

The Gulf Stream was on fire yesterday and will be for a while.   With the exception of the red drum (picture courtsey Dennis Watson) all these fish were caught yesterday aboard different boats.  I do believe the big bull  drum bite near and in shore is on.  I've heard a couple other reports of big bulls being landed.  Please take note of the proper way this fish is being held.  In addition to Dennis thanks to Billy Noble, Capt Brant, David Kiser & Kevin Sneed for use of these pictures

"Great fishing school" | | 04/30/16

Today was my last stream school of the year and it was a good one. We did our land class yesterday eve and everyone was good to go on bait rigging and setting spreads; we also looked at charts and decided the offshore edge of the Blackjack looked good. We set lines at 8:20am and it was pretty much non stop until we picked up at 2:30. We found big midwater marks of Blackfin Tuna over structure in 250' and we hung in that area all day, picking on nice 10-25# Blackfin, Mahi and a good size Hoo. The Hoo skied our teaser chain and then seconds later the rigger behind the chain popped and smoked off. Then the flat line rig bent over and started peeling. The rigger was a 20# Blackfin and the flatline was the 45# Hoo getting greedy. Later we were idling down sea fighting a couple Mahi when a 150# Blue followed a bait in that I was clearing. The Blue was not lit up and didn't have much interest in eating, but it was cool to see as it swam and circled just feed behind the transom for several passes. Congrats to Capt OC and first mate Austin Aycock and their crew for winning the Mahi Challenge. They had a couple of 18 pounders and iced the deal with a stud 34 pounder. We had 10 entries in the quickie event, which isn't half bad. Keep your eye to the OIFC report and posts as more of these "Saturday Challenge" events will be coming for inshore and offshore. Capt.
