"Waterway Dredging " | Do Work / OIFC | 03/19/17

AIWW Dredging Project
Beginning this Weekend – 3/17/17

The dredge (Southwind) is mobilizing to Ocean Isle Beach this weekend in conjunction with the AIWW crossing project. This project will remove approximately 35,000 C/Y of material from the inlet crossing and place the material on the east end of our island.  Material will be placed on the east and west sides of Shallotte Blvd. for a distance of up to 800 feet on each side depending on quantity removed.

The pipe line for this project will be placed on the beach from the inlet side. Work should be completed within a two week period.

"Inshore Fishing" | | 03/17/17

I have high hopes today for our inshore captains!!! The weather lately has not been the most cooperative for fishing, so it has been kind of quiet. Both guys have charters this morning (no pressure Capt. Jeff and Capt. Jacob), but stay tuned...HOPEFULLY they will have a lot to talk about when they get back to the docks!

"Kingfish Cup REGISTRATION TIPS" | OIFC | 03/13/17

Prospective King Cup Fishermen,

The time is almost here to enter.  Registration will open at 9am, GPS time, on Wednesday, March 15th.  The first 100 teams to register will be competing in the 2017 Kingfish Cup series.

We are recieving a lot of positive feedback regarding the Kingfish Cup, and many have suppositioned that the 100 boat field will fill quickly.  As such, below are a few notes that will help you in your entry on Wednesday morning.

  • Registration Wednesday, March 15th will ONLY be taken on-line.  This is to keep things fair in case there is greater demand than availability.
  • The registration form is accessible from the menu across the top of the www.KingfishCup.com website.

  • It is recommended you go ahead and take a look at this registration page.  You will notice the * before certiain fields.  Those are required fields to be filled.  Thus, you need to be sure you know the information that is to go in required fields or your entry won't go through.

  • You will have the option to enter using VISA, MASTERCARD or DISCOVER so be sure to have one of them available.  Be sure you key the information required accurately or your transaction won't go through.  This also includes the billiing address!
  • Level 1 entry is automatically filled.  You can choose to enter Level 2, Level 3 and/or any of the entry fees to the qualifying events at this time OR you may log back in to your entry at a later date using your Captain's last name and birthdate to add additional Levels or qualifying event entries.
  • Finally, you will see at the very bottom of the Registration page a message.  At 9am on Wednesday, March 15th that message will disappear and a "SUBMIT" button will appear.  This is when the site is live and you can enter.  IMPORTANT - it will do you no good to enter all your information and then wait for 9am.  YOU HAVE TO HIT THE PAGE REFRESH at 9am, March 15th to be able to see the SUBMIT button.  Thus, any information you have pretyped will disappear every time you hit refresh and you have to start from scratch.

This is a very exciting time to be a competitive King Mackerel fisherman.  Payout opportunities are expanding as new events and new formats have been introduced.  The root of the reason for this increase in payout moneys is quite simple; the marine industry is finally recognizing how valuable our little piece of coast is.  Consider that from Little River, SC to Carolina Beach, NC you have five of the largest King Mackerel tournaments in the entire country.  We should all be thankful and be proud.  We are driving our own opportunites to compete in these big tournaments with big payouts through our dedication and love of the sport of competitive King Mackerel fishing; and when I say "we" I mean us fishermen and I mean tournament organizers.  Thank you fishermen, thank you tournament organizers and thank you sponsors for making southeastern North Carolina the hub of the competitive King Mackerel fishing world.

ONE FINAL WORD -   If you plan on entering multiple Levels in the Kingfish Cup, and if you can afford to do so, please go ahead and enter optional Level 2 and Level 3 when you register.  More teams entering the higher money optional Levels will encourage other teams to do the same, which will snowball into a payout never before seen in competitive King Mackerel fishing.  That is where we hope the Kingfish Cup will take all of us!   Good luck and thank you for your participation.

"Groin at the Shallotte Inlet. Story by WECT-TV" | Do Work / OIFC | 03/05/17

Ocean Isle Beach receives final permit to build terminal groin

Jon Evans
Mar 3, 2017 09:43 AM

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - The town of Ocean Isle Beach has received the final permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to move forward with a terminal groin project, the next step in a process that began in 2002. The groin is part of the town’s Shoreline Protection Project

A terminal groin is a long, low structure, typically made of rock or concrete, which extends out into the ocean at the end of an island, and is intended to trap sand and prevent beach erosion.

According to a news release from Town Administrator Daisy Ivey, the town will move forward with plans to put the project out for bid and to select a contractor. Leaders expect construction to begin by November.

Plans call for building a groin 750 linear feet in length that includes a 300-foot anchorage system. The project will be located on the beachfront off East Third Street. The 3,214-foot section of shoreline directly west of the groin will be pre-filled with 264,000 cubic yards of beach-compatible material obtained from the Shallotte inlet through hydraulic dredge methods.

Any chance of putting a few of these on a rental program? Lot of money for a reel that your average guy will use 2 days a year.

"Bluefin Trip" | Catch All | 02/19/17

Good first day with boat up in Oregon Inlet. One of my favorite things in fishing is to give first-time experiences. Today Jerry Fehlig and son Wade Fehlig finally got to catch their first Bluefin Tuna. Jerry said it has been a 20yr quest foiled by Mother Nature and bad luck; but not this time. Jerry did a great job battling this 87", 395lb Bluefin from start to finish to accomplish the longtime goal. Congratulation and thanks for letting me play a part.

Camdyn Beck had the good fortune to blue fin tuna fish with her dad, Jeff and friends Brian Aycock and Captain Brant Saturday at Wanchese, NC aboard the OIFC's "Catch All" Contender. They didn't catch any bluefin Saturday but did manage a yellowfin for dinner. Below is a picture of a huge bluefin caught Friday. That trip is described in Capt Brant's report,a picture of the yellowfin the crew Saturday caught and a picture of deckhand Camdyn cleaning the "Catch All". There are no free rides in this circus :)
