"Have a Safe Memorial Day Weekend" | Do Work / OIFC | 05/23/14

The picture below is OIFC Pro-Staff Member Brandon Sauls showing his respect for those who made the unlimate sacrifice protecting our freedom.

Reports state there have already been 14 deaths on N.C. waters so far this year.  This figure is equal to the total for last year.  All the evidence is not in but it is felt by officials alcohol was involved in many of these deaths.  PLEASE BE CAREFUL and remember not to drink and boat!

Stop by and say hello!!

"BIG COBIA" | | 05/22/14

Brian Vick sent me this email of a 74.6 pound Cobia-he writes "Hi. We caught this 73.4 pound cobia last week in front of ocean crest pier at oak island . I was wondering if you've heard of any bigger cobia caught yet this year?" I have not heard of bigger caught in this area for sure. But I know I would like to see one swim up to my boat. I have an idea where he might end up ! Nice job guys. This weekend will hopefully be a great weekend for Cobia. I know the OIFC boats will be on the hunt. Good luck to all. Capt. "Prep" | | 05/22/14

Folks think that charter fishing is all fun and play but I can assure you there are no "off" days. Maintenance and prep of equipment is constant. A big job is the biannual bottom clean and paint and hull wax jobs. We are looking good now- and if you can't be good, look good is what I say! Capt. Brant McMullan Ocean Isle Fishing Center

"Rodeo Leader Board" | Do Work / OIFC | 05/21/14

Clay Morphes is the 1st on the Rodeo Leader Board with this 3.25 lb flounder he landed today.  Clay landed his flat fish on a well trained OIFC Mud Minnow.  I have indoctrinated these special minnows to understand that to give up their life as bait for a big flounder or drum is a noble thing.  To make the OIFC Year Round Leader Board is a most noble sacrifice.  They will work hard for you.

Speaking of the Leaderboard, 8 yr  Camdyn Beck is in 1st place in the wahoo and mahi divisions.  Are y'all going to let that stand?

Where did they catch the cobia? Nice catch. ! I am fishing out of little river and am looking to catch a cobia this weekend. North wind Saturday is good for my chances to head towards Sherman and the. 90s and or the Jim caudle reef. Any other spots in that triangle. ? Your fishing wisdom would be most appreciated captn rick. I have been out with you on more than one occasion.

"Dirty Martini" | Do Work / OIFC | 05/20/14

I don't have a narrative, but it goes without saying the Dirty Martini worked the bottom today.  If you are not at the OIFC Wing and Fish Company in Downtown Shallotte, you way want to try The Midtown Bistro in N. Myrtle Beach.  Both establishments serve fresh from the local waters seafood.

"Fresh fish at the Wing and Fish Co" | Hail Yeah / OIFC | 05/20/14

After a long winter hiatus I finally got the chance to get back offshore this past Sunday. I joined Capt. Barrett and my brother in law, Shawn Lathem aboard the OIFC Yellowfin. We met at the OIFC around 6 am and started loading the boat with the required tackle for the day. With no particular species in mind, we just kept loading rods until every rod holder was full. Our first stop of the day was a wreck around 50 miles offshore. We did a little jigging in hopes of snagging a grouper or getting some interest from any cobia that may be around. We managed a couple of small jacks and decided to keep heading offshore. We pulled the throttles back again at the McMarlen Ledge. We managed a couple of blackfins, one wahoo and completely whiffed on a triple hook up. As we trolled down to the scarp we managed to pick up two more wahoo, the biggest 52#, and a mahi. The scarp showed some promise with a nice weed line and few flyers, but seems it may have been picked over by the 6 boats that were already there. Next, we decided to see if the grouper would cooperate. We put in a couple of hours on the bottom fish and were rewarded with grouper, golden tilefish, blue line tilefish and rosefish. The Wing and Fish Company is stocked up with fresh fish! Be sure to stop by and enjoy some of the freshest fish in the area.

"Backwater Report" | Tiberias - 22' | 05/20/14

What are they biting? A little bit of something and a whole lot of nothing. Everyday has been something different lately. We fished several of the usual places last week with fresh crab chunks, live mud minnows, and peanut menhaden with only a few bites. We switched gears to soft plastics hammering reds, trout, and flounder. Go figure! I got out Sunday afternoon catching a nice trout and several reds on soft plastics. Monday we drifted tubbs inlet with live mud minnows catching several short flounder. We switched gears to target reds with crab chunks and live menhaden without a bite. We went back to flounder fishing with mud minnows and peanut menhaden. Caught more flounder, trout and bluefish. Again, we switched gears to target redfish with crab and menhaden. We ended our day with a nice redfish and a black drum. So, what are they biting on? Throw the kitchen sink at them, something is bound to work. See ya on the water!

"Liberty, NC Boy Scouts Rock the Dock" | OIFC | 05/19/14

I sent in an earlier picture but again wanted to congratulate the Liberty, NC Boy Scout troop who fished with the OIFC on Saturday morning.  Good job- Logan West, Levi West, Alex Graves, Ryan Gerringer, Logan Shoffner, Dylan Gresson, Colton Woodard, Austen Cook, Jarrett Moser, Seth Fields and Hunter Clapp.  All these young men successfully baited and hooked their own fish AND weighed-in to compete in their own Rock the Dock event.  Thanks again guys and best wishes.  Stick with fishing as it will be a lifelong sport you, your friends and family can do together.

Thanks to OIFC and their GREAT staff. Captain Brant treated our Boy Scouts like they were his best customers. He gave them instructions, bait , hooks and more, so go by and support this great family business. PS if you look at the picture close you will see that "fishing beast" aka Brayden that Captain Brant released on our poor scouts. It was great to see him catching those fish and our boys saying, what kind of bait is he using. We are still giving those boys a poke about that. Thanks again and God Bless. Troop 301
