"Rob's Bait Pens" | OIFC | 04/07/14

Team OIFC uses and endorses Rob's Bait Pens to hold our bait -- great for Bluefish, Mullet, Blue Runners- and even Pogies when the water isn't too hot.  Anyway, they cost a fortune to ship, so ordering is tough.  But Rob is coming our way in early June, and if anyone wants to order a bait pen, cost will be $300 for what he calls his "Goggle Eye" pen -- which is what I recommend for our area.

EMAIL me if you want one, and I'll add it to his order --

"Shallotte Inlet report" | OIFC | 04/06/14

Had a chance to ride out to Shallotte Inlet yesterday and see how water looks.

The last 2 buoys are missing and the bar at the end looks worse, but there still is a path out, just a little east from the last buoys. Approx 3-4 feet at low tide[go between the white water coming from the west bar and the east bar].Brant will get with the Wildlife folks and see if missing buoys can be replaced.

Where the dredge is operating, if you go SW from buoy 9, there is a huge new bay that has been created that is 10-15 feet deep. You can follow it and get out the inlet that way if you want, but not marked. That bay will either be a great summer flounder/redfish spot, or I expect cobia and kings can be caught there this year[inside of the inlet!]. Once the dredge is done it will be interesting to see where the major water flow goes and thus digs out the main pass out. We'll keep everyone informed of what we see.

"Backwater Report" | Tiberias - 22' | 04/04/14

The weather has been awesome pretty much all week. It has taken these last few days to get the water conditions back to par after the weekend's blow and wash out. The water temperatures are rising steadily and had reached well into the 60's with yesterday afternoon's low tide. I have fished a few days this week and enjoyed a little success. Sunday the wind was blowing so hard it was difficult to present bait to the fish. We broke 4 fish off under the docks. Monday we fished our tails off to break one fish off in the docks and land an 8 inch flounder. Tuesday was lick wounds and get prepared for Wednesday. Wednesday started off without a bite in several locations and the redfish have just been plan sluggish as of late. As the tide started to rise so did the fish. Mark Wood, his daughter Cameron and son Alex landed 7 redfish ranging from 17 inches to 25 inches in the last hour for a great day on the water. Thursday I got out pitching soft plastics to check on the action. The speckled trout have come back alive! They had shut down with a slight drop in water temperature, rain, and driving winds. Yesterday they were on fire! I landed at 30 trout yesterday afternoon in just a few hours. Most were on the small side, but a pair of 21 inchers were in the mix. All fish were carefully released with wet hands to fight another day as the fishery is closed for harvest until June 15th. See ya on the water!

"A Pretty Good Day" | Do Work / OIFC | 04/03/14

Bryan Freeman reported that they had a pretty good day earlier this week.  They headed south and boated 6 wahoo out of about 12 bites.  All were really nice fish.  They also managed to weed through the alberts and corral a couple of really nice black fin.  The biggest wahoo was 74 lbs and the biggest blackfin was 23 lbs.  The water was greenish -blue and was 69.8 degrees with no current.

Thanks for the report Bryan!

"ska" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 04/03/14

With the sudden closure of the Southern Kingfish Association or SKA it's kind of like the old saying "you don't know what you've got until its gone.'' I know that I surely will miss being a part of the organization and by the responses I've seen a lot of others will miss it as well. Well the good news is the Tournaments will move forward full steam ahead including one of my favorites the Jolly Mon which is right around the corner. For those of you that are looking for some friendly competition and a similar points race for our local area check out the Carolina King Mackerel Series. This was put together by our local guys to keep track of points and have a little incentive to participate in each of the tournaments. I truly hope and do believe that the ska will come back and hopefully be better than ever and if so I will have my money in both series.

"The Almighty's Heart?" | Real-Time Update | 04/02/14

As I posted yesterday, I carried some kids from the Masonic Children's Home on a fishing trip. I know many of you are aware of the great work that they do for our children. While fishing, one of the girls pointed in the sky and said "look at that heart." When I looked up I was in awe. It took me a minute to think of capturing a picture. Here it is. What do you think?

"" | Real-Time Update | 04/01/14

Today I was blessed to have Charlie and Selena Godfrey from the Masonic Children's Home and some of the kids from this very fine organization accompany me for a short but productive trip. We eased out to about 30 feet of water and the kids started catching sea bass. These kids have never been out before and many do not have the opportunities that other kids have. However, with help from the Children Home they will have a much better chance a a happy childhood. I am grateful to have been a part of their experience today.

"Stream looks promising" | OIFC | 03/31/14

I am happy to see the warm water is pushing back in off the Stream.  Quite a few boats are talking of heading to the Stream on Tues and Weds.  Below is the temp image.  You can see good blended temps in the low 70s around the scarp and then a hard 72+ degree edge to the north off the Steeples and particularly along the Same Ole area.

This is a question I often find myself in -- fish the hard edge or fish the blend?  I think in my opinion I'd go South toward the Winyah Scarp area and go for the blended water.  It's early for Mahi, which would be better for the hard edge.  Thus, I usually opt for blended low 70 water for Wahoo.  I could be 100% wrong ???  Good luck to all and we will post reports we receive.

You know Team OIFC wouldn't just sit on the sidelines.  We are actually headed up toward Hatteras to see if we can get hold of the Bluefin.  We've been watching all season and there is finally a little weather window -- It doesn't seem like the fish are as abundant as in past years, but we are going to give it a go -- stay tuned.

Good luck to all -be safe -- email us reports and pics to info@oifc.com

"Weather Window" | Real-Time Update | 03/31/14

For any of you guys/girls eager to make a run to the gulfstream, tomorrow looks like the day to head out there. Forecasts are calling for 1-2ft every 8-10 seconds which, if predicted correctly, will be flat as a pancake. The black fin tuna have had us scratching our heads this past month. Quite a few folks have went out this year to wahoo fish and have pulled tuna lures to see if any were around with no luck. There were Wahoos’ caught but no sign of concentrated black fin. Tomorrow is a perfect opportunity to head out in search of these fish. What we really have been looking for is stability in our weather patterns. A wind and temperature that is fairly consistent for 3+ days. This stability will provide the warmer gulfstream water to finally bunch up to form a good temperature break to fish. Thus, black fin tuna should be near that water break feeding on bait. Not to mention where there is a concentration of any type of smaller tuna, there are usually wahoos’ hanging close by. If your planning on heading out, remember to stop by the OIFC and pick up a “Green Machine” and some tuna feathers. They both will produce bites from your chicken of the sea. Treat yourself to a day off work tomorrow and head out there- they should be biting. Capt. Derek Treffinger

"Tubbs Inlet" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 03/27/14

Video Clip 1

I drove over to Sunset Beach yesterday 1/2 hour past low tide and took these pictures of Tubbs.  The one place I could not get a picture of is the sand bar at the 1st dock (with the roof on it) on Jinks Creek.  It does not show up in this pic but it is almost all the way across the channel just under water.  If anyone knows someone with an airplane I could fly with I'd love to get some aerial shots of Tubbs, Shallotte Inlet and Lockwood Folly at dead low tide.

Patrick my email is sunset69@atmc.net. Love to have the pix to share

Captain John 03/30/2014

Last year I could only get in Tubbs 2 hrs either side of high tide. A friend in a skiff told me not to try this year as it has really changed over winter. The huge dredge has been in Shallotte Inlet for quite some time and doing a great job on the east end of OIB ~ they will have a nice beach for a while again. Hopefully, the dredge will take out the shoal in the ICW just east of the inlet while they are there. Although Shallotte is a little closer Little River Inlet is still my choice, always wide and deep.

Patrick Dowd 03/29/2014

Rickey, I have an aerial photo of Tubbs, somewhat close to low tide from March 11. I can email it to you if you give me your address. Patrick
