"The Wrong Flatfish? Fun?" | Tiberias - 22' | 07/21/14

When the action is slow thank goodness for a stingray or two. Stingrays aren't the most glamorous species, but they sure will tug on your line. It is just plain fun to tangle with one of these to test your arm strength and your gear. We did find a few of the right flatfish for the dinner table and released a few reds. Live mullet on a carolina rig is getting done. See ya on the water!

Brant, Barrett, Amy, Caroline and Brayden joined forces again this weekend to compete in the SHARE King Mackerel tournament out of Wrightsville Beach. The weather was as good as we have seen this year- slick calm seas. And..... We had a good day of fishing. 4 year old Brayden released his first Sailfish and we are headed to the scaled now with a decent fish. It may not be a winner but it's a good fish and we are proud of it. Stay tuned for the final report on how we do. Capt. Brant McMullan Ocean Isle Fishing Center

"Working Hard for those Smiles" | Tiberias - 22' | 07/20/14

Plenty of small nibblers out there to keep you busy baiting hooks. Flounder have been providing some good action. Redfish have been hard to find at times, but once you do it is game on! Speckled trout have also been scattered around providing some headshaking action at times. Mullet minnows are thick as fleas in the waterway. Pogies have made a better showing the last few days as well. The bait is thick and the predators can't be too far away. Some trips we find a few, others we don't find them at all, and then others we can't shake them off the hook. Live mullet have been my favorite bait on a carolina rig lately. Soft plastics in white and chartreuse colors will also work well. Gulp 4" mullet cruly tails and Bass Assassins sea shads are great alternatives to live baits. See ya on the water!

"Mayson" | Do Work / OIFC | 07/19/14

Mayson is a young man who is a great and loyal customer of the OIFC.  He lives on and fishes Wilmington St canal regularly.  He sent me this picture of 2 flounder he caught on Capt. Rickey's Custom Flounder and Red Drum Rigs on a recent outing.  But, he also caught a keeper flounder in an empty crab cage too.

Thank you for being an enthusiastic angler, & a loyal customer.

"Return of the reds" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 07/19/14

Since the hurricaine  came thru I have been scratching my head wondering what happened to the redfish. Well I keep looking and found the in a creek down south and some docks in the ICW. We even caught on with a SCDNR tag. Awaiting news back to see when and where this one was tagged.

"week of the doormats" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 07/19/14

What a great week to land a trophy flounder. It is still a thrill for me to take someone that doesn't get the chance to fish but maybe once a year and catch them a citation size fish. Check out these two the 8.20 and the 6.30 doormats these guys landed this week. I can honestly say it never gets old.

"Last Saturday" | Do Work / OIFC | 07/18/14

Capt. Don LewisIII and Team Spec-One crew Travis Detter and Kevin Hales landed this 85 lb wahoo near the Christmas Rock Saturday.  The huge fish hit a pogey on a down rigger resulting in a hour and 20 minute fight on 20lb king tackle.  Just as the 85 lb'r got boatside it shook the hooks loose!  Capt. Don almost went overboard but landed a gaff shot before the monster wahoo could swim away.

"Old guys rule" | Get Busy | 07/15/14

We had a split charter today where I took the old dudes and Capt. Jacob got the young guns. With a bad storm hanging over our shoulders all afternoon we stuck it out. After a miserable morning of 25 + knot winds and almost no fish bites we hit it in the afternoon. And with a change of tide they bit. This inshore slam topped of with a Nice 8.20 flounder.

"Need a First Mate?" | Tiberias - 22' | 07/15/14

Aaron chose to treat his sister Lindsay and mom Daun to a half day of fishing. Lindsay was the first one that I met and immediately I felt comfortable that this trip was going to be fun. Aaron showed next and immediately cut a joke about his mom. Oh yeah! This is going to be fun even if we don't catch any fish. I met Daun last and I would happily adopt her as my second mom. This crew showed true family love the whole trip. Well, it was all fun and games until Aaron crop dusted Lindsay. Thats true brotherly love right there! Trying to make a longer story shorter these two young adults have yet to find their soul mates. I am not sure really why as they are both tons of fun. While Lindsay and Aaron were busy trying to out do the other. Daun was steadily putting fish in the boat. Duan caught four redfish around 25 inches and several flounder with 2 of them around 18 inches. Lindsay drilled a nice redfish and a keeper flounder along with a few shorts. Aaron brought up the rear with a nice red, but he may never live down the fact that he lost a nice flounder right at the boat. I am sure Lindsay will remind him many times for years to come. I really enjoyed my time on the water with these three. I hope we can make it happen again in the near furture. See ya on the water!

"Makayla and Josh" | Tiberias - 22' | 07/14/14

I have really enjoyed taking this young couple fishing the last two years. We got into a few flounder and some reds again this year. We also landed another large stingray that made Josh's day. Makayla landed some nice flounder and some nice reds. They did not want to keep any fish so most of the fish were released to fight another day. I kept one flounder for my dinner table. Hope to see you guys next year. See ya on the water!

"Final Approach" | Do Work / OIFC | 07/13/14

Taken from the Final Approach Facebook Page.

The 2014 East East Coast Got Em On King Mackerel Tournament had highs and lows for Final Approach Fishing Team. The day started off with some peanut dolphin, then a reel screamed and soon after we boated our 21.15lb king. Fought some sharks and cudas before something smoked our long line. After clearing lines and the fish making a few good runs, we worked to the boat. Jason felt something strange a and Captain James thought a hook may have pulled. Once we saw the fish we knew... what happened. A barracuda cut off the back end of our king. After and hour and a half of the fish being in the box it weighed over 33 pounds. We had what would have been the 3rd place fish. Later in the day we caught a nice bull dolphin, but we didn't put our money in the dolphin pot. Overall we enjoyed the tournament and got some meat for the dinner table out of it. Our king finished 41st and paid our entry fee for next year. Our focus shifts to the SHARE King Mackerel Tournament next week

"Red fish" | Do Work / OIFC | 07/13/14

Martha Pope posted a couple of pictures of a 38" red drum.   She said the drum made her miss church.  Dad started the fight and John Pope finished it.  The fish was caught and released at Shallotte Point.  Martha said they gave thanks for him, wished him luck and sent him on his merry way.  His injury was already there.  They figure it may be from a boat prop.
