"Stocking Stuffer" | Do Work / OIFC | 12/07/14

Am I big on Britt's Bucktails?  Yes I am and for good reason.  Shane is a Brunswick County Boy who knows inshore fishing like the back of his hand.  He uses what he sells.  Shane takes what works for him and sells them locally.  I had a dificult time getting them to sell.  I started tracking Shane's fishing on facebook long before I knew him or that he selsl his lures.  I talked him in to giving me some to try out.  They worked so well that the last time I saw them they were in my Jr. Angler Camdyn's rig bag.

Shane hand makes each rig.  He collects and smelts his own lead and  pours that into molds.  He gets real dear tails from hunters, trims and dyes each one.  Then he wraps the tail feathers and puts the finishing touch on.  I certainly oversimplified the process.  But to purchase a hand made rig that is made to match each "season within a season" in real time is not only a unique art form but is a very effective trout, drum & flounder catching maching.  Any inshore/near shore angler will be a happy camper Christmas morning with these in a stocking.

COMING SOON:  A black/olive because the mullets will be leaving and the glass minnows will be around.

Video Clip 1

I am saddened to report that OIFC tackle manager Jerode Fox has unexpectedly passed away.  Jerode spent his last day alive trolling the Gulf Stream for Wahoo with me.  The entire OIFC staff is in shock over his passing and we will miss him very much.  Jerode was an easy going and kind person.  He had a passion for fishing that often had him telling tales of past adventures.  His favorite were the many years he spent Bluefin Tuna fishing out of Morehead City.  I think it is very fitting that the very day he passed, the first Bluefin Tuna that have been missing from Morehead for several years, suddenly showed up.
The OIFC family sends our thoughts to his family as we all reflect on our fond memories of "J-Rod".
RIP and may your new ocean be full of Bluefin and Wahoo.

** attached is a video that Jerode posted just days prior to his passing - hopefully it will come through.

Sorry to hear about Jerode. Prayers for his family and extended family OIFC.

Capt. Rickey 12/07/2014

J-Rod and I had become friends in the short time I had known him. I had lent him my Grundens for the trip Brant just mentioned. When he returned they were dripping wet and it was cool. We both had a good laugh over how soaked & cold he would have been. It always brightened my day to see him at the store when I came in. The video is one he and I did. It looks like it didn't post but if you click on "video clip 1" it will play. Rest in peace and tight lines my friend.

"Bluefin Recon" | Do Work / OIFC | 12/06/14

~~
Today I ventured offshore on the Get Floor'D/OIFC to do a little recon mission with Captain Megan for bluefins. We opted to put lines in just shy of the sharkhole in 59 degree water. Upon deploying baits ( all white Joe Schute's 3oz head, a blue and white islander and a custom all pink islander pro on 200 pound fluorocarbon)  we began to see all the signs we were looking for; a few birds suspended bait, we spotted Dolphins and a whale. There are schools of bluefish in that area (bluefin candy). after trolling for a about 30 mins we saw a bluefin air out on a school of bluefish!  We continued trolling the area hard with no bites. That being said it is only a matter of time before one of these giants falls for a ballyhoo and the game will be on!!! I feel that after this front moving through the conditions will only improve! So load up the big reels, grab a stand up harness and get ready to battle with a true giant!

"Bluefin" | | 12/05/14

If you ain't first, you're last. When the Bluefin bite goes down are you going to have what is hot? Capt. Joe Shute has been at the forefront of the Morehead City bluefin fishery for 20 years. He has designed these lures specifically for Bluefin and last Tuesday they were responsible for 4 out of 4 over 100" Bluefin caught out of Morehead. Now I ask, are you gonna be first or last? Now available at the OIFC while supplies last. Also stocked with jumbo ballyhoo and all the necessary equipment. They are out there, we just have to get boats on the water to find them. I'll see you there- Capt Brant Capt. Brant McMullan Ocean Isle Fishing Center

OIFC is your bluefin headquarters. We are prepping for the bite to begin as fishermen begin to give effort out of our area. We have jumbo ballyhoo, premade rigs and all the necessary terminal tackle to catch a giant Bluefin. And we will be set up as a drop location to bring fish to be held in slush tanks and sent to Japan for sale. Capt. Brant McMullan Ocean Isle Fishing Center

More info. A 91 incher caught yesterday in Morehead. Several on the dock this morning. Brant saw big concentration of gannets between AR455 and FPShoals. Folks this may be the year the Giant Bluefin return to our waters. Weather looks perfect this week. Go get em! Just as a refresher since it's been so long since we've had the Bluefins, the best game plan is to fish the Bluefin in morning till 11ish; move out to break and catch the winter Wahoo bite, come back in and check again for Bluefin signs, and then drop a chicken rig around the horseshoe and catch JUMBO seabass for dinner. It's a beautiful thing.

"Britt;s Bucktails Trout Report" | Do Work / OIFC | 12/01/14

~~The past couple days I've got served a slice of humble pie! Not catching the numbers I have been or the quality of fish I want to. On the way to the water I put my thinking cap on and thinking of what I've been doing right and wrong. We have had a good amount of rain which has resulted in alot of fresh water run off. So i told my self I wasn't going deep up the river today. So that took care of that problem. So on to the next, I've been fishing deeper water (8-12ft) which has worked since we have had a couple cold days and nights. So decided to stay in the 1-6 ft range. Well considering all the factors it payed off for me today. I tied on my 1/4oz electric chicken bucktail took the hook out a chartruse vudu shrimp and tipped it on the bucktail. First cast , first twitch yielded me a nice 24" trout weighing 5.11 on my digital scales, worked the area a little more with nothing to show then made a move next spot I picked at the fish and landed 2 more in the 3 lb range. Saw some birds working in the back of a creek and took the bucktail and launched it belive before it hit the bottom I had a fish on felt like a red at first but quickly came to the top and netted a 26" fish that the digital scales showed 6.23 lb. All in all it was a good day. The pictures just don't do these fish justice.

"Black Drum Feast" | Tiberias - 22' | 12/01/14

William, Brody, and Evan joined me for a half day of fishing this past Saturday morning. Bitter cold! However, the tide was right and the water temperature is still holding just a bit over 50 degrees. The action was pretty steady all morning with black drum, redfish, and speckled trout all making a good showing for us. The Ocean Isle Fishing Center had barrels full of live shrimp, so we got us a few dozen. There are no guarantees in the fishing world, but live shrimp this time of year is cheating. Of course, I once had a wise man tell me, its better to cheat than repeat. I personally enjoy catching fish on soft plastics becuase of the aggressive strikes, but making clients happy is #1 priority. I sure hope these youngmen had fun. I sure did! See ya on the water!
