"Jolly Mon Awards" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 06/25/12

The awards dinner and presentation was last night.  The recipients had a good group of supporters joining in and a great meal to boot.

Captain Brant will be providing the details of the finishing order shortly.  Below are a couple of pictures including the winning team of D. Canady, Preston Nowell and T.K. Nowell.

Click on this link for more pictures.  Also a big thank you to the substitute photographer Courtney Beck.

Congratulations to all.

"Saturdays Jolly Mon report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 06/24/12

Wow was I shocked with the amount and quality of Kings that came to the scales Saturday at the Jolly Mon weighin. All spring, and particuliarly the last few weeks, we have been moaning and groaning about how bad the king fishing was, and where in the heck were the kings. Truthfully, I was worried if anyone would actually catch a king. Well, you put approx  100 of the best fishing teams in the Carolinas on the water and sure enough, either the kings give up their hide and seek game or these guys are good. The fisheremen found the fish, although it seems the fish were scattered in packs, and if you found them you caught them good. On top of that, those fishing in 100 feet of water had extra benefit of lots of mahi mahi mixed in and also cobia. Today 80+ teams are on the water for the 2nd day of the tourney, so come on by OIFC and watch the final day weighin. The scales open at 2:00 and they have to be in line by 5:00. Our off island shuttle is running, no traffic/parking hassles.

Out in the stream, Jay Murphy proved the fish are still there bringing to the OIFC dock the most impressive catch of dolphin I have seen all year. He had 20 excellent fish ranging from 15-35lbs. They found a well formed weed line in 450 feet offshore of the 100/400. The day before, Kendel Suh and his team found a 40+ wahoo and a load of dolphin in the same area. Also, yesterday, one of the tourney boats brought in a huge wahoo that pegged out our scale at 70lbs and would have kept going probably up to 80+.

Come join us today at OIFC for the final weighin of the 2012 Jolly Mon.

"Jolly Mon Day 1" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 06/23/12

Those who stayed home because they thought the kings were not around made an error.  I am not sure how many boats weighed in but there was a "boat Load" of kings, mahi and cobia brought to the scales.

Right now D. Canady, Preston Nowell and T.K. Nowell are in the lead with an impressive 41.6 lb king..WOW!!!  In a solid second is Corey Bellamy, Trask Cunningham and EDDIE JONES.  Below are pix of the 1st and 2nd place kings.  Click on this link to see all the pictures from today's Jolly Mon.

"Jolly Mon" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 06/22/12

Today was the Jolly Mon Jr. fishing day.  A few kings were weighed in.  Also the Captains' Meeting was held at the OIFC.  As usual a grand time was enjoyed by all.  Click here to see all the pictures.

I fished the Jolly Mon Jr. with Jeff, Chris Campbell and of course our Jr. Angler Camdyn.  The conditions were a little sporty with the winds out of the south west.  There were some kings and mahi caught today.  I saw photographic evidence of several nice kings caught and released Thursday.  I had to swear under oath I would not share the info.  And, I don't have the pix.

Captain Brant has expanded to Jolly Mon to include a prize for mahi and cobia.  This was announced at the Captains' Meeting.

OIFC Gulf Stream class alumni Capt Jim Almond aboard his Southport, Never Sa tisfied, captured a massive Mahi today. Angler Bart Norwood caught a 46lb Ma hi in 500' offshore of the Blackjack. The fish ate a green machine at 11:30. The team boater 4 other nice Mahi in the area to add to their prize 46lber. That's the largest Mahi to come to the OIFC docks in a couple years. Way to go guys!

"Flounder bite is on today" | Get Busy | 06/21/12

I took Greg and his three nephews David, Alex and Nathen out this morning for a little flonder fishing. They bit as soon as I put a line in the water. Greg from Alaska and the boys from Geensboro N.C. We managed 9 flounder and a few reds. I will never get tired of watching a kids face light up when a redfish nails a bait. Priceless!!

"Jolly Mon ocean report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 06/21/12

On the water yesterday; here's what I saw. Water from 0-50 feet absolutely beautiful "king green"; crystal clear. Pogies scattered up and down beach[in front of Holden Beach bridge yesterday], glass minnows and spanish. From 50 feet to 90 feet, color not as good, a lot of scattered weed, but did see schools of tinker mackeral in 75 feet. Tinkers are absolute #1 King candy and we don't usually see them till November. From 90 feet and beyond, weed not a problem and water color crystal clear.

Fishing action: There were Kings caught at the Shark Hole. Also heard reports of Yaupon and 90/90. What we suggested early in the week, with the weather stabalizing, the kings are finally begin moving in to where they are supposed to be. It seems every day reports are getting better as more and more fish are being caught. 2 more days to go before tourney so hopefully it will continue to improve.

"A fishin' dog" | N/A | 06/21/12

Diesel, from Aventura Florida, loves his new Mahi dog collar from the OIFC. Now he just needs a life jacket & he'll be ready to go fishing.

Thank you to Daren for getting Diesel's message to us.

"Bottom Fishing /Spearing" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 06/20/12

Below are a couple of nice bottom fish taken today.  The grouper is Nesbit Noble's along with his son.  The hog snapper was taken by Jeff Martini and will surely be on the menu at The Midtown Bistro in North Myrtle Beach.  Also pictured below with the boat load of fish are Alex Mercer and Austin who, along with their dad Brian fished with Nesbit Nobel.

This crew was 40 miles out.  They limited on big bass, scamp, gag, cobia, mahi and trigger fish.  They also had their share of big sharks and jacks.

Thanks for the pics and info.

"Jaws" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 06/20/12

The news has been packed with reports about the recent shark bites at Myrtle Beach this week.  Never fear, Capt. Quint, aka Captain Chris Dew is doing his part to make the waters safe.  Captain Dew told me he had caught and released a half dozen or so sharks like the one in this picture this week.

Yes, I said released, after a stern warning!

"Two Cute Fishergirls!" | Get Busy | 06/20/12

Our good friend Stephen Hunter dropped by the OIFC and we were happy to give him the latest info on the Spanish. Stephen said we made his two girls extremely happy (Rylee 6 and Addison 4). They caught most of the spanish near the OIB pier and some near Shallotte Sea buoy. The hot lure was a  O/O green spoon.  The young ladies also managed to catch a small king near the buoy as well. Stephen said they had a good week with the Spanish, catching 15-20 a day.  They also caught some Bonita as well.

Comments like this from Stephen optimizes our mission statement.  "Once again I can’t express how much you guys at the Fishing center do to make fishing fun for the kids and their families and that’s what it’s all about. Hope to see you soon". Our pleasure Stephen!  That puts a smile on our face!

Kennan Hill and his daughter Haedyn fished Monday afternoon on Kennan's boat along with Daniel Simmons. They caught 4 flounder only 2 keepers along with a bunch of undersized throwback sea bass

Great job Haedyn.  The future of fishing relies on the youth of today.
