Capt Steele reports good catch of Wahoo. He's on the way in and should be to dock around 6:30pm. I have talked to two other boats that went to the Stream and they both said it was red hot. This action is so exciting I can hardly stand it! It was however a very nice day for myself, Amy, Caroline, Brayden, Blakely, Stephanie and Barrett as we spent the day on the boat. The Ocean was flat calm and Spanish Mackerel bite was red hot from Shallotte to Lockwood. We took a brake and ate lunch at the PROCO and then went back to it. It was great to see all the small boats getting in on the action. Besides the King bite turning on at the 90s, there were also Kings at Shark Hole. The ocean is coming alive, and Fall has barely started. Water temps on the beach are still 80, but when they hit the 76 range, the beach bite should be on. Oh yeah. Today was monumental in my recovery as it was my first trip on a boat since my fall. It could not have gone better. Next week I get the cast off my arm and the following week I start rehab walking. Thanks to all for the support. Stay tuned....fishing action ahead

"Pogy pod fishing" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/22/12

We've been talking all summer about the amazing amount of pogies in our waters all summer and how they were holding in deeper water than we normally see them. We have also been amazed that the predador fish have not been pounding on them as they would seem to be very vunerable in the 25-35 foot water depth. I guess it took a couple cold fronts to get the Kings to open their eyes, but apparently they have finally gotten the word that all they could ever want to eat is available right off the beach in our waters. Kings are skyrocketing on the pogy schools and thus offers up one of my absolute favorite ways to King fish. Pogy pod-ing. Here's a different way to king fish that I bet you will really enjoy. Net some pogies[or just snag one out of a school with a weighted treble hook.] Take a spinning rod with 12-20lb test; tie on a standard King rig[without a skirt], pitch the pogy into the school of pogies. Freespool the reel and the pogy will rejoin and swim with the school. Since he's got a hook in him, he will be "wounded" and the way nature works, he will be targeted by the predador fish since he is weakened. Keep freelining and when you suddenly feel line being ripped off your reel, flip the spool into gear and you will be hooked up. It's a ball of fun as you are basically hand feeding your bait to a king. Be careful not to get your finger caught in the line as you free line. You can actually pick out the pogy school that has Kings working it by watching the pogies in the school. If they are being worked, they will swim fast in a line rather than a circle. With the north wind this weekend[calm on the beachfront], it is the perfect time to give this style of fishing a shot. One other word of warning; 30+ years ago I was doing this and had a King jump in my boat..32lbs!. Yes..I swear a true story.

"Kings Near Shore" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/21/12

Captain Jacob and Captain Dew along with independent sightings report that kings were skying on thick pods of pogies just off of Madd Inlet today.  Captain Jacob and his charter told me they saw one that had to weigh in the neighborhood of 30 lbs.  They also said the bait pods were the size of half a football field.  Hope the kings stay near shore for the Fall Brawl and save me a ton of money in fuel.

Also, Captain Jacob said he pancaked one of his inshore pogey nets over a pod of pogies and they were so fast they ran out from under it.  I've been in more than one tournament and watched anglers throw themselves out trying to catch bait with the wrong net and we'd pull up, Captain Jeff Beck would make one throw with a               Captain Brant's Custom Net, float it with bait and we'd be gone.  Lesson learned...Don't go to a gun fight with a knife.

Just talked to Capt OC. Catching Spanish off Holden in 30 ft. Said Pogys thick; Spanish and Blues in them. This is great news as it means blow did not dirty water too bad. No Kings sported yet but I guarantee you they will be biting at Yaupon by Saturday. Exciting times ahead!
