"A Good Education Pays Off" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/24/12

William A. "Gus" Lodgek reports he fished on 9/21 in the Black Jack area. He said that thanks to Capt. Brant's Fishing School they put their first Wahoo on their boat, going 2 for 3!  Gus said he did everything the school taught and picked up 2 in the 40lb range.

He also hit a hole in 120 ft deep water and picked up a gag, red, and strawberry grouper, along with triggers, porgy and some pig fish in less than a hour.

"Thanks again to every one at the OIFC they are the best."-Gus

"Capt. Jim At The Stream Saturday" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/24/12

Jim Almond brought a variety of great fish by the OIFC this weekend.  His heaviest wahoo 46.5 lbs with the others in the 30 lb range, and if we look at the pictures it looks like he and his crew were fishing in a bathtub.

I sincerely hope this weather holds.

"Watch out for falling kingfish" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/24/12

Getting reports up and down the coast of kings skyrocketing from pogy schools along the beach. It's been 50+ years since I was a 12 year old kid honing my king mackeral fishing skills on the Carolina Beach Fishing Pier and in late September thru October we would see kings skyrocketing on pogy schools. Credit has to be given to the folks who got the pogy netting ban thus allowing the population of pogys to replenish such that the kings have a reason to get excited and do their skyrocketing thing. It started with Save Our Pogies which led to the legislative bill stopping commercial netting in Brunswick County. Then last year, the NC Marine Fisheries stepped in and stopped netting throughout our NC waters, and next was the Legislature passing a bill to stop the netting statewide. The end result is what we are seeing now with the massive schools of pogies along the NC coast and the Kings are going nuts. Also watch this fall as other gamefish join in. There will be tarpon, giant redfish, and everything else that swims joining in on the smorgasborg. This should be the best fall fishing season in generations.

And I will also add in that I am forecasting this winter that the Giant Bluefin Tuna will return to our waters. No longer will the massive schools of pogies that appear in mid November off Cape Lookout be wiped out by the netting; which was timed to coincide with the beginning migration of the Bluefins into NC waters. When the Tuna would arrive, they would find the food source they looked for was wiped out and thus they would move on somewhere else in need to fill their huge appetites. Their food source will be there, and in the way nature works, somehow the word will get to the Bluefins that the restaurant is back in business and it will be game on for us anglers. Fishing wise, it's looking great!

Here is a picture of a little tournament held by the members of the Got-em On live bait club on Saturday. The top 5 were all over 5lbs with the 1st place fish weighing over 10 pounds. Hard to guard these guys when they have thier game faces on.

12 year old Daniel Russ worked hard all morning to catch up his and his mom and dad's limit of Spanish.  Nice job Daniel.  The Russ family joined Capt OC on the Carolina Cat this am.  The Spanish bite had been strong up and down the beach in 20-30'.

"Black Jack & Steeples Saturday" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/23/12

The crew from Guy C. Lee Building Supplies joined Captains Chris Dew and Steele Park for a 13 hr trip to the Stream.  They caught some nice citation wahoo, one weighing 49.2  lbs. pulling Black Bart high speed lures.  Also in the mix were huge amberjack, and a couple of small tuna.

Making up the charter were "Lee "Big Foot" Hewette, Bryan Strickland, Seth Strickland and Gary Massy.

This past weekend has been beautiful and all the pieces are coming together for a perfect fall fishing season.

**Shown in the red OIFC shirt with the big smile and tiny fish is our ace 1st mate, dock boy, computer whize, Aaron Dew.
