"Saturdays fishing report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/30/12

Saturday saw a all out assualt on the Kings in many different spots. There was a good bite of teenagers at the Shark Hole and the Jungle. The tourney winning fish came from Yaupon and there was a good bite there around noon. 2nd/3rd came from the Fairway Buoys. Bait is absolutely everywhere, from the breakers to 40 feet of water. It appears the fall king season is going to be epic. As soon as the water cools down a little there should be an explosion along the beach. My guess is the US Open will as usual be in the river channel and come Fall Brawl tourney, Shallotte Inlet may be the spot as it has in years past. All in all, it looks like fall in the Carolinas and it just don't get any better than this.

"Rumble In The Jungle" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/30/12

The OIFC has received many pictures of kings caught yesterday and I have some to add also.  I'll post them during the course of the week.  But for today I'm only going to post one picture and to date it is my favorite.

"Kings" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/28/12

Capt OC is on a near shore charter wearing out the Spanish, but he called me to say he is hearing a lot of radio talk with a good bite of Kings at the Shark hole and 15 mile rocks.

"Popcycle Shortage" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/27/12

A Severe Cigar Minnow shortage has hit fishing.  Nobody can get Cigar Minnows
because hurricane Isaac in the Gulf shut down fishing early and thus the shortage.  So, Captain Brant has bought Jigger Ballyhoo as a replacement.  "Jigger Hoos" are small ballyhoo. They are packed roughly 20+/- per pack. They are VERY good substitutes as they are more durable than Cigar Minnows and can be trolled faster.  They work great on OIFC dead bait rigs.  The only thing that has to be done different than Cigar Minnows is to break off the bill before rigging.

Today marked another mile stone in my recovery: first serious fishing trip.  The weather forecast was right and I received an invite to fish with good friend Joe Seegers of the Sputhport area aboard his boat Hooked Up.   Joe spent most of his early years working as a mate out of Hatteras, and I looked forward to learning some of his tricks.  I was very impressed.  Through the day we hammered away at the Blackfin and Skipjack Tuna while sprinkling in the occasional Wahoo and Sailfish.  By day end we had 7 Skipjack, 8 Blackfin, 2 Wahoo (1 @ 60 #) and went 1 for 3 on Sailfish.  We spent the entire day working the inshore side of the Steeples.  Thanks to Joe and great crew and friends Rich Carcich and Scott  Myerson and of course my brother Barrett who was assigned my care taker for the day.  Much more fishing awaits in my near future.  Stay tuned.

"stream bound" | Real-Time Update | 09/27/12

Headed out this morning aboard the Hooked Up with Capt Joe Seegers. Wahoo is the objective. Likely fishing between Blackjack and steeples. It's a beauti ful morning on the water. Amped up and ready to put some meat on the deck. You'd think capt Brant would be a little more enthusiastic for his first return to the bluewater! It was an early morning :)

"At It Again" | Get Busy | 09/26/12

Tommy "Flatfish" Helms took a little time away from showing real estate the 22nd to get in a little flounder fishing.  He said he had to cut his day short and most of his fish were caught in the last 20 minutes of his trip.

Ed Morris' grandson Sean took him out on the "Chillin'" last Saturday and they each landed a nice Red Drum.............not for eating though.......they were both over 28" +/-, but great fun to catch. They caught them right around high tide on pogies...........not saying where, just look at the pix

Thx Ed and it will be our little secret

Today Capt Brant, Derek and I took a few kids on an educational field trip. (wink wink) Ian Bowen,Zeb Clemons, Sidney Jones, Luke Hardee, Addi Hardee, Caroline and Brayden McMullan prove to be quite the little fishermen. They began with angling the Spanish mackerel and by the end of the trip they were hand lining the fish in all by themselves. They were the best little crew we have ever had! The ages range from Brayden at age 3 to Luke age 11.
