"CCU Seminar" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 03/07/13

The OIFC received this from John who attended the Seminar-

Saturday Coastal Saltwater Anglers put on a seminar to help defray costs of these college students fishing. There were four presentations. The 1st was offshore trolling and everyone had to learn something. Next was Jacob from OIFC and he did a great job with an inshore presentation. I recognized one of my favorite fishing spots on the Shallotte River in the short video. It was nice to see his young son land a redfish on the video. Jacob was very open showing everyone the tackle he used and described his presentation too. He informed the group of boat position depending on tides also. He answered questions from the group when he finished. I no longer have my 17’ skiff and since the restaurant added docks in the river I may not get back there as much. At low tide with boats at the dock my larger boat may have a problem with the sand bar. Like Jacob, I preferred the river through the tide change. When finished Jacob had to leave as he had a client to take fishing while the rest of us talked among ourselves during the lunch provided. The next presentation was given by two kingfish tournament anglers. With my bigger boat curtailing trips to the river and Tubbs Inlet I was anxious to hear what they had to say. I ran charters on Lake Erie long ago and am anxious to begin trolling and drifting in the ocean, especially trolling. I really needed to find trolling speed ranges and etc. That info and much more was provided. The last presentation was by a charter boat mate on near shore techniques. The raffle—well let’s just say there was so many items I believe everyone left with one or two fishing items! I’ll go back next year and suggest everyone consider helping these young men and having a good time learning something too. Jodie Gay of Bluewater Candy lures will be giving a different presentation in Wilmington on the 16th. Sadly, the same day as OIFC is having a special day…. Bet I can make both!

A friend of mine TIm and I made a couple of these this weekend and thought id share this simple and cheap solution to rod storage. I will be using this for whenever I get done from a day of fishing. I'll simply take all my rods off the boat and stick them all in this rack as well as all of my used lures/rigs for the day..Rinse everything at one time and let it dry and your done.. I trailer my boat and usually when i get done i'll lay the rods against the boat and rinse them that way and usually end up having my rods sliding down the boat scratching it up. Im sure most of you guys have seen similar stuff but heres what we used << For one just like this that holds 8 rods You will need 2-12ft 2inch pvc ,12 pvc T jointsand 4 end caps, pvc glue and thats it . If you want add a bungee chord around the whole thing and hang your lures from there to be rinsed off. Takes about 20 minutes to build and will be great storage for brushes,rods,gaffs,lures,etc..

Rod vertical cuts were 11 inches .. And the horizontal end pieces were 2ft and get 2 Hollow T joints for them to slide fully onto the 2 inch PVC.. .. The cuts in between each rod holder for me was 3 inches but I think 4 would of been a little better if your carrying anything bigger than a 50 w reel

Steve Pfaff 03/07/2013

Nice job. Would you share the cut length (pre-glued)of the rod verticals and the three horizontal end leg sections?

Eddy Jones 03/07/2013

Capt. Rickey 03/06/2013

Great idea and I'm sure you don't want them scratching your new Cape Horn.

"Bag of Tricks" | Tiberias - 22' | 03/02/13

Trey joined me for a half day of backwater fishing. We started in some well known hot spots and started with all my usual tricks. It would do no good for me to tell you what  we finally caught our fish on today. I pulled out an old private stash of discontinued baits that only come out under special circumstances. The bite was tough for us today and special circumstances is what it took to put a few fish in the boat. Trey landed his first redfish today. Trey had another one on that appeared to be a little bit bigger than the first but pulled the hook. The reds were not very aggressive with their strike today. On the other hand, the trout that we caught busted it! We landed about half the bites because the wind was blowing just enough to keep a bow in the line. We still managed to bring some good eating back to the dock. Make no mistake about it though, we earned it! Trey, thanks again for coming out and fishing with me. Hope to have the opportunity to put you on some bigger reds in the future. See ya on the water!

"March Madness" | Real-Time Update | 03/02/13

1st Mate Derek and I left the dock at 10am this morning for an early season adventure with Ron Komich and Dave Picha. Fishing in 40-50 ft of water we caught and released dozens of the "endangered sea bass." Conditions were beautiful for our first trip of the year. The true madness of March was the quality and quantity of the bass. being released. However, a great start to a new season with a couple of really nice guys.

"new YouTube video" | OIFC | 02/28/13

Many of you saw this last year, but we just now got around to posting it on YouTube -- this was video that Chris Campbell shot while fishing with Team OIFC for Bluefin Tuna last year out of Oregon Inlet -- We are watching the weather right now, looking for a break. These Bluefin are holding off Oregon Inlet now!  If we get a trip together, I'll post on the site and if you can move fast, grab your boat and gear and come on with us.

Pinwheel -- no class. Arrogant. A bad representation of professional and recreational fishermen.

Jeff 03/02/2013

Emails have been sent! All we can do is try.

Rube McMullan 03/02/2013

The email address for the Wicked Tuna folks is: NickCorporon@gmail.com wickedtunacasting@gmail.com We've been trying to talk them into bringing on the Carolina boys, Team OIFC to invade the turf of the New England boys and start a North vs South war. No takers but maybe they will listen if we keep pounding on them. Fire away! Thanks.

Jeff 03/01/2013

If that doesn't get your blood pumping and make you want to get on the water, nothing will.

Corey Bellamy 03/01/2013

Will do that would be awesome ...

Capt Brant 03/01/2013

We tried to get on Wicked Tuna show. Cross my heart, we pitched them last year to bring us in as "young guns" from Carolina that were showing up to mess with all the old timers. Now look at the format- Pinwheel?? Sound familiar? I think we could have done a better job to shake things up than Pinwheel. Maybe the producers will come around. Email the show and tell them to bring in Team OIFC. We need your help!

Corey Bellamy 03/01/2013
