Robbie Dial is in Biloxi prefishing and reports boat owner David Braswell  (The Getting Jiggy) caught a very large blue marlin, which was David's first blue marlin, as well as several kings.  He's attempted to email pictures, with only these two making it through.  Compare them to the pictures from Hatteras after Ida.

"Atlantic Ledge" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/16/09

I just read that Captain Barrett said the Kings should begin biting.  He was right!  Captain Jeff B (Do Work/OIFC) and 1st Mate Jay Utley went to the Ledge and got into the kings this morning.  Jeff reported that other boats around him were also catching several.  Check out the picture of the 30.50 lb'r they landed!   Then for some bazaar reason they just shut down.  He moved a couple of times but couldn't  find them again.  As you can tell by the pictures of the porpoises the water has really cleared up.  The water temperature was high 60's to 70 degrees.  They didn't attempt to find bait so they used frozen cigar minnows.

"Nationals Bound" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/16/09

Boats on the trailer and bags are packed.  5:00am departure for Biloxi tomorrow.  Team OIFC is making a return trip to where the infamous "pickle incident" occured last year.  If you haven't seen go to www.youtube.com and search OIFC pickle.  Hopefully the bite will be at least a fraction of what we saw last year.  We'll keep the OIFC report updated from the road with information from this year's SKA National Championship.

While we're gone the weather is supposed to be great so I expect the fishing to turn on by the late part of the week.  King Mackerel will be in 80-100ft, grouper should be in 85 to 110 ft and the wahoo are likely chewing on the break.  November is one of the best months to fish our area so don't miss out on this weather window.

Lastly, don't forget about the Traveling Fisherman trip we're planning to Panama.  We need to have our list of fishermen together by December 1st.  If you're interested be sure to call or email me at captbarrett@oifc.com.  Call 910-575-3474.

"P M Update" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/15/09

Captain Jeff Beck (DO Work/OIFC) and 1st Mate Jay Utley just returned to port from a day long bottom fishing trip.  They fished squid and frozen cigar minnows in 90-95 ft of water.  The crew landed "an assortment of bottom fish", but only a few were of legal size so were put back.  Jeff said he had to go to 90 feet to find temperatures in the 66-67 degree range.  He stated the water was still murky from the winds and rain.  Several boats were out with him king fishing and none were reported caught.  Jeff and some other boats will go out again Monday..Hopefully we'll have some good news.

Remember the Captains Club...we've got some good stuff!

"News and such" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 11/15/09

**Team OIFC consisting of Barrett, Rube and myself have defended our title as champions of the annual OIFC.com KMT, hosted out of Morehead City and Hatteras.  Our first day of fishing we weighed a 46.95 and our second day we weighed a 50.05 for a 97 pound aggregate, followed very closely by Release who weighed a 43.05 and 53.9 for a 96.95 pound total- now that's close!  The Release team did get the satisfaction of big fish as they weighed a 53.9.  We look forward to hosting this event next year and hope that this year's catches of monster Kings will spur more fishermen to participate in this awesome fishery.

** Capt. Kyle's Inshore Classic is coming up Thanksgiving weekend.  If you are in town and need something to do on Saturday and you like to Trout fish, you really should enter.  The fishing will be VERY good and the entry is only $100.  Why not enter, if you're fishing anyway, might as well add a little excitement- CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS.

**Team OIFC and many other local teams are heading to Biloxi, MS to fish in the SKA's National Championship tournament, which takes place next weekend.  The format is the same as our OIFC.com tournament we just hosted which has each team weigh their largest King over 2 days of fishing and the highest combined weight wins.  Every year Carolina fishermen do very well in this event and many local fishermen have either won or placed very well.  I'll post happenings or shoot some pictures while we're fishing, so stay tuned for live updates.

**The Capt. Club Sale is now on.  Visit the OIFC and redeem your points you've earned through 2009 to buy product at 50% off.  This is a GREAT way to buy your Christmas gifts for family and friends; and they won't even know what an awesome deal you got on the gift.  Besides, who doesn't want an OIFC or GMAC sweatshirt, hat, visor, T...... ???

**Bluefin fever is all ready starting to kick in.  We've had several guys all ready drop their reels off for us to spool and put top shots on to get them ready.  It is still a bit early, but when the first report comes in, you want to be ready.  We have it all from A to Z including the experience and knowledge to help you.  Come see us for your Bluefin gear.  CLICK HERE to shop on-line for Bluefin gear.

**Thanksgiving is just around the corner and many of you spend the holiday at the coast.  The inshore fishing for Speckled Trout is incredibly good during this time, which is why its a great idea to fish in Capt. Kyles Inshore Classic, hosted Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving from the OIFC.  If the weather permits and you want to get offshore, look for good King Mackerel fishing near the Frying Pan Tower or straight off in 80-90 feet of water.

"High Tides" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/15/09

OIB is experiencing exceptionally high tides.  I've seen a couple of places where the water is over the walls.  A customer told me that his wake on the ICW was pushing water over some walls.  If you have a concern and would like your property checked, I'll be at the OIFC until noon and will be happy to check out your property.  Call me at the OIFC 910-575-3474.  If it is afternoon still call the OIFC.  Robert will be working and ask him to call me and I'll check your property.

"Last Day for OIFC.com KMT Sign Up" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/13/09

Well as it turns out our 9 day tournament probably could have been held over one weekend.  The weather this week has not been favorable and from Morehead to Hatteras this weekend it could remain a little sloppy.  It is supposed to be improving but further north will take longer to settle.  If anyone decides to brave the conditions this weekend and fish the OIFC.com KMT, registration will remain open until 11:59pm tonight.  I'm sure the fish are right where we left them and I bet they're hungry!  The last official fish day for the tournament is Sunday.  We'll post results when the event is concluded.

"Bluefin Weather" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/12/09

The weather here is RAW.  Just the kind that gets one thinking about bluefin tuna fishing.  Captain Brant has a section set aside with top of the line bluefin gear.  I just bought anOIFC Custom Bluefin Combo.  I feel like I just bought the winning lottery ticket.  Also check out our Web Store for more info.  Most will remember the season we had last year.

Not to get ahead of ourselves, the king season is not over yet.  The store has a "cheat sheet" out along with a display of tackle Brant recommends for those headed to Bollix...this also applies to our waters.

Finally word is that trigger fish were being caught in 80', keeper sea bass and kings were being caught at the Tower this weekend.  A customer bought several Roscoe Jigs today because of the number of fish he and his friends caught with them this weekend.  I've got my eye on an OIFC Custom Offshore Spinning Jig Combo.  Hopefully things will calm down shortly and we can get back after them!

"Come Aboard...Panama 2010" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/12/09

I have been periodically posting over the last few months about the Traveling Fisherman program and the next trip to Panama in March of this coming year.  The trip is scheduled for March 14th-19th, 2010 and will consist of 4 full days fishing and 5 nights at the Paradise Fishing Lodge.  For details on the trip check back through earlier fishing reports or email captbarrett@oifc.com.  We are hoping to fill this trip with a group of fishermen and fisherwomen with the common background of being friends of the OIFC.  The trip can accomodate up to 15.  The deadline to keep this an all OIFC trip is December 1st which is just a few weeks away.  So, if you have interest in coming aboard for this incredible fishing excursion I need to hear from you immediately.  Deposits are not due until January 1 but I need to get a list going for those interested.  After December 1st if we don't fill the spaces, the trip will be opened to the public by the lodge operator.  Once again, if heading south to Panama in March to chase billfish, tuna, and other glamour species is on your agenda contact me directly to join the team.  Email captbarrett@oifc.com or call 910-575-3474.

"Rainy Day Report" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/11/09

Needless to say nobody is fishing the OIFC.com KMT today.  I don't believe there will be any fishing until the weekend according to the weather forecast.  Right now it's raining sideways and when the rain quits the wind is not, at least until Saturday.  This is good though.  We need a break after last weekends adventure.  My arms and back are still sore from doing battle with all the monster kingfish.

Today is a good day to think about the upcoming winter months as this weather is somewhat typical during that time. First up will be the Bluefin Tuna madness again in December and January.  We have placed the welcome signs and encouraged the pogies to stick around so hopefully the bluefin will once again make an appearance right here outside our back door at Ocean Isle.  After the bluefin have moved on, the arrival of February and March means its time to either clean out the basement or search for warmer latitudes and the next great bite.  That is where the Traveling Fisherman program comes into play.  The OIFC is putting together a trip to head down to Panama, Central America and fish for giant black marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, huge yellowfin tuna, roosterfish and snapper.  The trip is slated for March 14th-19th at the Paradise Fishing Lodge.  We'll be fishing 4 full days aboard the center console fleet while accomodations, food, and cocktails will be provided at the fishing lodge for 5 nights.  For an adventure of this caliber we were able to secure an excellent rate of $2600 per person for 3 per/boat.  This includes everything but airfare to Panama, transportation to the lodge and gratuity.  We will be fishing the world famous Hannibal Banks and Montosa Island using a variety of techniques including live bait, casting top water plugs and trolling lures.  From my own experience down there I can promise there is no where on Earth with the variety, quality and quantity of gamefish.  We have several fishermen and fisherwomen interested in the trip but there is space remaining.  It's a great opportunity to travel to an exotic fishing location with a group of familiar fellow fishermen and fisherwomen.  Deposits are due by January 1, 2010.  Email captbarrett@oifc.com if you're interested in joining the team.

For now we'll watch it rain, recover from recent battles, and dream about the next fish.

Former tropical storm Ida is blessing us in southeastern N.C. with a few showers.  But that does not deter the Fishing Report, especially when we have such good reporters!

Dr. Jeff  Wallen of Myrtle Beach and OIB reports that he fished with live shrimp Sunday and caught 2 18"+ trout and several slot redfish.  he bought his shrimp in Murrells Inlet.

Captain Jeff Williamson (Get Busy/OIFC) decided to return from deer hunting and sent this picture of some flounder caught in the Lockwoods Folly River by Jeremy Ridenhour.   Jeremy was using B&M PK 5's.

Also, Jamie Blue of Clemson Univ. updated his earlier report with a picture of a blackfin tuna caught on Martin, Joe and Chris McLoed's fishing trip

"Local Fishing Report" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/10/09

Finally got a chance to take my dad king fishing. He had heart valve replacement surgery 6 weeks ago and felt like going, so we went. He did good and Joshua did Great. We went 24 miles off shore and had a ball!!!!!!! Thankfully I had Dylan with me as we had a Chinese Fire Drill of sorts.. I was on the bow with Dad trying to gaff has king, ( he gave out half way through his first one he hooked up with but I talked him into staying with this one till we got him in) and had two reels peeling almost into a meltdown off the back. I finally gaffed Dad’s king and looked back to see Dylan on one rod and my 6 yr old Joshua holding and fighting the other.. It was nuts.. We only kept 4… 1 for supper and 3 I owed to a neighbor at the condo for letting me borrow his cordless drill last weekend. We had a ball!

Forgot to tell you that my Dad is 83.. what a great day..

"OIFC.com report" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/10/09

This weekend my father, brother and myself competed in the annual OIFC.com King Mackerel tournament.  The tournament has weigh-ins stationed in Hatteras and Beaufort, NC and allows participants to choose to fish 2 out of 9 possible days.  The first day of competition began on November 7th and the last day will be on November 15th.  The tournament is on-going right now and entry remains open until Friday PM, but the competition is all ready heated.  Saturday Team OIFC posted the largest fish of the day with a 46.95 pound King followed by Release who weighed a 43.05 pound King; several other boats weighed fish up to 35 pounds as well.  On Sunday, the tournament got very interesting as the Hooyah weighed a 51.6, Team OIFC weighed a 50.05, Release weighed a 53.9, and Dig It weighed a 40.55.  If you do the math, Team OIFC has an aggregate 2 fish weight of 97 pounds followed by the Release with 96.95 pounds.  Now that is absolutely as close as it gets.  Hooyah had posted a 22.3 on Saturday and their 51.6 had them beat out the Dig It for 3rd place by .5 pounds.  The concept behind the tournament is to give tournament fishermen an opportunity to compete during the best fishing of the season.  Who doesn’t love to catch monster King Mackerel?  The tournament is still on through next weekend, and right now, the weather looks like it will break by the weekend.  If you want to enter, go to www.OIFC.com and click on the OIFC.com King Mackerel Tournament.  Entry is handled exclusively on-line and all rules are posted there.

On the fishing story side about the Team OIFC day-- we got into one of the classic late Fall bites.  We caught 20+ Kings over 25 pounds, 6 were over 30 pounds, 1 was over 40 and 2 were over 50.  We weighed the 50.05 that we caught first and the BIG fish pictured below that Barrett and Rube are holding is possibly bigger, but we didn't want to kill another huge fish, so we took her picture and released her.  Luck would have it we hold the lead by .05 pounds-- maybe its karma?  Wish more of you guys out there would get in this tournament-- 2 out of 9 fishing days gives plenty of time to fish on good weather days and you can't beat the fishing--- Entry is still open until Friday at midnight- might get pretty again this weekend- ENTER and catch the big ones-- good luck

"Wahoo/Sailfish" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/10/09

The OIFC has been asked fairly frequently lately for wahoo reports.  Well  Steven Smith has come along to save the day!!!   Sunday he was fishing in the Stream, near the Blackjack, at a depth of  250 feet of 80 degree water.

Steven said that they had several wahoo hits and a nice sailfish using an  OIFC Custom Wahoo Rig.  They landed one wahoo and released the sail.

As we all know Saturday and Sunday were just tourism bureau excellent days.  By all predictions we are in for some nasty weather the next couple of days.  It should be oughta here before the weekend,  but we'll have to see what it does to the water conditions as far as fishing is concerned.

Thanks for the report Steven.

"Tournament Update Day Three" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/09/09

Holy *&%#!!!  What a day of fishing.  Today's fishing embodied precisely why this tournament was started.  The waters from Morehead to Hatteras in the late fall is a special place.  We've experienced the bite here in the past and thought it would be great if more kingfish  teams had a reason to explore the incredible fishery right here in our own state.  Thus, the OIFC.com KMT was born.  I'll admit it, Team OIFC is made up of kingfish junkies. We are always searching for the next great bite of kingfish.  Today we got a fix that none who were there will soon forget.

I haven't received a report from everyone who fished today but I do have some information.  The teams of Dig It and Release fished from Morehead City today and absolutely put the smack down on the fish.  I know this because Team OIFC eventually joined in on the smack down on the east side.  Dig It put a 40lb slob together with their 32 from yesterday for a highly respectable two fish agg.  Release, who weighed a 43 yesterday, weighed the king of kings today with a 53 and change!  Wow!  That is the big fish of the tournament so far.

Team OIFC and Team Hooyah left out of Hatteras inlet this morning in opposite directions.  Hooyah went north and OIFC south both looking for bait which proved to be difficult in both directions.  Hooyah gave up on the pogies that were so plentiful the day before and all but disappeared today and headed offshore.  The fished the same area from yesterday that was so productive but today it was dead.  However, they were able to jig up bluefish and croakers which made for great live bait.  With their hopes and dreams of catching monster NC kingfish all but dried up after a long day of fishing, Capt. Lee Frick reported they made one last move inshore to a cooler water temperature break.  At 3:00 just 15 minutes after dropping the lines in she hit.  By 4:00 she was on the scales at 51lbs and change.  That makes 2 50's so far.  Hooyah puts their 51 together with their 22 from yesterday.

Team OIFC had the same bait struggles as Hooyah.  After running about 40 miles down the beach we finally found the pogies.  They were the same turbos from the day before.  If you haven't seen these pogies before you wouldn't believe it.  They are enormous.  Being that we were so far south from Hatteras we decided to fish some of the east side spots around Cape Lookout.  It was mid morning before we finally found the fleet of boats and the fish.  There was no question if we were in the right spot when we pulled up as there were 8 boats at the spot and 8 bow riders with bent rods.  For the rest of the day we went to battle with a class of kingfish that is hard to believe.  I don't know how many fish over 30lbs we released but we let 3-4 40lbers go and one fish that was between 50 and 55lbs.  During that stretch we kept one that would be our weigh fish.  We couldn't bring ourselves to kill two fish of that size.  At the scales our slob weighed 50.05lbs.  That makes 3 over 50 on the scales.  What a day!

I'll be the first to admit that this tournament hasn't caught on like we hoped.  The participation has not met expectations.  What has met expectations is the fish.  They have not disappointed and have been as advertised - big and hungry!  To have this many big fish with just a few boats fishing says a lot about the fishery.  I'm hoping there are some teams out there that are planning to register for the tournament this week, but if not, it sure has been fun for those of us who were out there over the last few days.  There is nothing like being in a bite of big fish.

As far as tournament standings, I can't post anything official yet because my best calculation has it so close I don't want to say without know for sure.  There is a dead heat for top honors in the agg between Release and OIFC.  Dig IT and Hooyah are also neck and neck for 3rd and 4th.  Release does have the big fish so far.

More tournament updates will be posted as they come in.  For Team OIFC it's time to rest for a few days.

"Day Two Tourney Update" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/08/09

Wow, what a difference a day makes!  The weather up here in Hatteras is absolutely magnificent.  Calm seas, blue skies, cool temps and hungry kingfish.  Teams fishing the OIFC.com KMT hit the water today in search of monster kingfish from Morehead City to Hatteras.

I have limited communications here in Hatteras but it is my understanding Mike Williams on the Release scaled a stud 43+lb kingfish today that was weighed in Morehead.  Team Dig It also posted a 32 and change.  The bite was apparently very strong as all the boats fishing had a load of kingfish.

Team Reel Linemen, Team Hooyah, and Team OIFC fished from Hatteras today.  The day started for us by departing the inlet and locating a school of pogies just down the beach.  Now these are not your average pogies.  These are super turbos.  The pogies weigh between 1 and 3 pounds each.  Trying to pull a net load over the side is quite the chore.  Armed with the best live baits possible we each of the three teams headed out and set up on different areas of a temperature change.  The bite was awesome early with double and triple hook ups the norm.  The majority of the fish were in the 15-20lb range but bigger fish were around.  Note the picture in an earlier report.  At the end of the day, Team Reel Lineman scaled a 19 and change and told a sad story of a monster that was eaten by a shark.  Team Hooyah posted a 22 and change and Team OIFC lucked into a 46.95lb hog.  This is why we come to Hatteras!  If you ever wanted a chance at catching giant kingfish now is the time.

Tournament registration remains OPEN.  The weather is still perfect and the fish are only just getting started.  Team OIFC and Hooyah are back at it again for the second day of the tournament tomorrow.  I'm sure others will also be fishing.  More news tomorrow.

"Local Scene" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/08/09

What a king Rube and Barrett have in their report.  Meanwhile, back at the ranch, inshore Bo Tucker and Glenn Hess had a great morning on the ICW behind OIB.  They were fishing with live shrimp on a rising tide.  Bo caught the shrimp in a creek yesterday.  If you've got live shrimp then "you da man!"

Offshore...The pogies were around the mouth of the Shallotte Inlet though most everyone skipped looking for them and used frozen cigar minnows.  Seemed the Horse Shoe and the Shark Hole were the best places to be for king action.

Jamie Blue has just reported that he fished aboard a friends Grady yesterday.  He said they caught blackfins, 3 of which they kept, they kept a 25 # king and several false albacore which were released at the Steeples.  He also lost what he thinks was a big wahoo when a line broke.  The bite didn't start until about 1:30.  The fish were hitting dark colors..blue/black, red/black and a blue bling head.  Jamie's day was completed when his Clemson Tigers beat FSU at Clemson in what was a great game to watch.

Matt Holt of Sunset Beach, aboard his black Contender "GutSea" bottom fished.most of the day today at the Atlantic Ledge.  Using dead cigar minnows he caught several keeper sea bass, bee liners and a gag grouper.  He reported that they were catching sea bass two at a time on squid.   They had two grouper get off.

This weekend has probably been the prettiest here this year and a lot of boats took advantage.  Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Thank's to everyone who provide reports to the OIFC so we can share them!

"Radio Report" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/07/09

The OIFC radio (channel 11) was rockin' today.  There were a lot of boats out king fishing.  According to what I heard the pogies WERE on the beach,  it sounded like they were being caught off Holden, but having cigar minnows onboard was still a good idea.  Several teens to twenties kings were being caught.  The seas were in great shape, but grass was a problem.  Some of the captains were reporting that close in the grass was so thick you could hardly pull a line.  More Sunday as I get it.

"Day one tourney" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/07/09

Day one of nine is in the books for the OIFC.com KMT.  Apparently the bite of big fish wasn't great for the boats fishing the tournament today.  Team Blue Chips was the only boat to weigh with a fish just over 13lbs.  The good news is there is 8 more days to fish.  The tournament is still wide open for the taking and registration is open until next Friday.

Team OIFC consisting of myself, Rube, and Brant headed north this morning.  We left out of Ocean Isle around 5am and fished our way to Hatteras from Morehead City.  We found plenty of bait, both pogies and blues, and lots of hungry small kingfish.  Now if we can just turn those hungry kingfish into 40lbers we'll be in good shape.  Tonight we're camped out here in a luxury condo at Hatteras Landing Marina along with fellow Ocean Isle based team, Team Hooyah.  The weather is supposed to be perfect for the next couple days so we're headed out tomorrow and will declare tomorrow as one of our fishing days for the tournament.  Stand by for the report tomorrow.

On the local OIB scene, the kingfish bite was good today and improving.  They should hit 5th gear tomorrow as the water continues to clear with the stable weather.  65 to 85 feet of water is the best bets for kingfish action.  The Jungle, Shark Hole and Atlantic Ledge are all producing.  Go get em!

"Latest News" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/06/09

The OIFC has received reports of fantastic sea bass action.  They are biting as close in as the Youpon Reef, and the Shallotte Ledges.  Many are keepers. With the cooler weather the sea bass are moving closer in.  Still the chances of catching the biggest are in deeper water.....65 ft or so.

The gray trout are also showing up around the Youpon and the 460.  They are hitting Betts Spec Rigs tipped with 1" to 2" squid strips or shrimp.  Fishermen have been having a blast with them on spinning tackle.

Reports are the kings are hanging in 80-90 ft of water with the Horseshoe and the Atlantic Ledge showing promise.  The Shark Hole has also been productive.  Right now the pogys are not around...dead cigar minnows or live cigar minnows jigged up are the ticket.

Have fun!!!!

"OIFC.com KMT Update" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/06/09

Attention teams fishing the OIFC.com KMT.  You MUST declare the days you are fishing prior to 6am of the days you fish by calling our hotline at 910-253-3474.  Also, when declaring your day on the phone message please give us your best guess on which weigh station you will be reporting to, either Hatteras or Beaufort.  You are not bound to that weigh station if your circumstances change but it will give us a general idea if we need to have our weigh master on duty.

Lastly, VERY IMPORTANT, remember that registration remains open until next Friday the 13th of November.  Teams may enter anytime during the course of the event until next Friday.  So, if you're waiting on a weather window you can still enter until next Friday.

The weather appears to be lining up perfect for the next 4 or 5 days.  This should be a great opportunity to take revenge on the fish as the conditions are just right for an all out blitz of huge NC kingfish.  Looking forward to this one!

"Recent Action" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/05/09

William Parker and Steele Park have reported that the Sea Bass action is hot and heavy at the Youpon Reef.  Steele fun fished today and caught a bunch.  William and his wife fished yesterday and said they were catching them 2 at a time.  He said that most were undersized, but there were several keepers mixed in.  William further reported that he had a lot of king action at the Shark Hole but did not elaborate on his bait.

The weather this weekend is supposed to be superb with 10 knot winds and the  temperatures to be in the low 70's along with plenty of sunshine.  This is a perfect scenario for a fantastic weekend of fall fishing.  I am looking forward to having a lot of action to report!

"Backwater Action" | OIFC 1- 36' | 11/02/09

While Captain Squid was catching those magnificent grouper many others were having good luck in shore.  As we saw, Brandon Sauls was having his day, but he wasn't the only one.  I talked with some who caught several nice flounder in Tubbs Inlet.  Captain Jeff (happy birthday) Williamson reported good fortune at he docks near Shallotte Inlet and watched as others scraped barnacles off the bridge fenders, fished with sand fiddlers and landed a cooler full of shephead.

Bait wasn't a real problem if you went after it on a fairy low tide.  Captain Jeff Beck found a mix of shrimp, mullett minnows and mud minnows in the creeks.  Speaking of tides, we were experiencing extreme lunar tides, which at low tide made navigating the shallows and fishing the docks near impossible,

If you caught the tides right..you could get in the action like Ryan Neuwirth, "Marky"  Mark, and Thomas Willis in these pictures.

"Inshore Report" | Speckulator - 22' | 11/01/09

November is finally here, which means some of the best inshore fishing of the year is upon us.  The trout fishing is good right now, but should only get better in the coming weeks.  The water remains to be slightly warmer than normal, as it has warmed back up a few degrees in the past few days.  It is a sure bet that when we do get a substantial cool - down that the trout will really start snapping.  On the redfish front, they're also very prevalent and willing to bite right now as well, and things shouldn't change.  These late fall and winter drum tend to run a little smaller, but they usually make up for it with they're numbers and willingness to bite.  The flounder usually get put on the back burner this time of year, but they are still around and there to be caught if you put you're time in.  I actually caught 4 one day this week on artificials while trout fishing, so theres no telling what you could do if you specifically targeted them.  NOW is the time....so go catch some fish.

""Trick or Treat"" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/31/09

Bet these kings, grouper and AJ's wished they hadn't been tricked into treating themselves on the pinfish Captain Roger Gales, Bob Newell, York Pharr and Ned Garber were fishing with aboard Bob's Regulator today.  They were fishing in 70 ft. of water when Bob caught the citation 32.7 lb king and Ned caught his 32.1 lb'r.  I'm sure  they wish they'd caught them last weekend for the Fall Brawl.

Not to be outdone, Captain Brant and Captain Chris Dew landed their own kings at the Jungle.  The Captains reported swells of around 4 ft.

Captain Jeff Williamson had an inshore charter today and boated gray trout, speckled trout, reds and one extremely dark colored flounder.

The fun of fall fishing is upon us and should be around for awhile!

"Spot Report" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/30/09

The spot are running and the piers are packed!  What does that have to do with me, you may ask?!!  Everything if you intend to use the boat ramp.  The parking lot is full with netting boat trailers.  Not a complaint about spot netters.  They have to make a living too.  However if you're going to use the ramp you had better plan your trip well.

If you believe the weatherman, near shore and inshore fishing may be the best call.  He's calling for winds, and right now he's on the money.  Kinada hurts my reporting.  But,  Captain Jeff Williamson can always be counted on to come through in a pinch.  He just sent these pictures of some kings he landed while on a guide trip a couple of days prior to the Fall Brawl.  Jeff and the guys were fishing the Lighthouse Rock using pogies when they landed these mackerels.  I deleted Jeff's email so I must apologize for not having the names of the folks who booked the trip.  If you send them to the OIFC, I'll make the correction.  MY BAD.

Couple of things, remember the guide program.  It's a great way to pick up the techniques our captains use and if you are just getting into fishing it's a fantastic way to start.  Also, with the fall fishing don't forget the Rodeo.  However we don't have a spot division.

Finally, beware of pirates this weekend.  Thay have already seized the OIFC.

"The Next Tournament" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/29/09

If you haven't already, be sure to check out the headline advertisement for the OIFC.COM King Mackerel Tournament located on all the pages at OIFC.com.  This will be the second year for this event, which was one of the most enjoyable and memorable tournaments we fished last year.  It is scheduled over a 9 day period from November 7th thru the 15th.  Teams will choose to fish 2 out of 9 days.  This is an aggregate event with the winner determined by the heaviest combined weight of two kingfish (1 per day).  Unlike the other king mackerel tournaments we host here at the Fishing Center, this tournament is hosted completely online.  Registration, rules, awards, and results will all be online at www.oifc.com.  Also, unlike our other events, this tournament is not intended to be fished in our local waters.  During the late fall each year northern North Carolina has one of the most unbelievable king mackerel fisheries in the world.  Between Cape Lookout and Cape Hatteras schools of giant king mackerel invade the area to gorge themselves on the abundance of baitfish.  Typically during this time fishermen get tired of catching before the fish quit biting.  The average fish is around 30lbs.  40lbers are common and fish up to 60lbs are possible.  The baits of choice are either bluefish or extra large pogies up to 2lbs.  As far as fishing goes, things are basically the same as anywhere else its just all the species are supersized.  The baits are bigger, the kings are bigger and it's not unlikely that you'll run into a giant bluefin.  The best fishing areas will be where temperature changes cross structure in 60 to 80 ft of water.  Or, just find the charter fleet.  Team OIFC will be fishing from Hatteras all week and will be happy to help anybody that wants to fish the tournament but hasn't fished the area before.

There are two weigh-ins for this tournament.  The first weigh in as in Beaufort at Town Creek Marina and the second is at Hatteras Landing Marina in Hatteras.  The early entry is $300 per boat.  Teams can register online at www.oifc.com anytime during the event until November 13th.  I encourage anyone considering fishing this event to make a trip out of it and visit Hatteras for a few days.  It's a truly unique place this time of year and the fish are close outside the inlet.  Billy Webster at Hatteras Landing has put together special rates for boat slips and accomodations for tournament teams.  Although there are no official get togethers/captains meetings for this event, I'm sure we'll cook out a few times during the week at Hatteras Landing and hang out on the docks.

All the information for this event is located on our tournaments page at www.oifc.com/tournaments.  You'll find information on contacts for accomodations, rules, schedules and other general tournament information.  You can enter through that page or just click on the advertisement on any pages at the OIFC.com site.  Contact captbarrett@oifc.com if there are any questions or you need help on preparing to fish unfamiliar waters.  Don't miss out on this one, it should be fun!

"Lobotes surinamensis" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/28/09

Just after everyone had finished weighing in their kings for the Fall Brawl Richard Keck walked up from the docks carrying a big brown fish which was obvious to the crowd, not a king mack!

Richard walked up to the scales, and Rube weighed the fish and identified it.  The ole'Lobotes surinamensis weighed 12.10 lbs.  Good sized fish.  Rube went on to explain that though  caught in our waters it was uncommon to see this tasty fish.

The big fish with what appeared to be three tails is usually an incidental catch while the angler is fishing for something else.  It's very often thought to be sick and thusly released because it floats on it's side.  Looking  a lot like a flounder, it generally hides under something, like weed, waiting for a bait fish, then darts out quickly and drills it for dinner.

Richard as fishing the Youpon with a pogy when he ran across this triple tail.  No, I'm not that smart, out of curiosity I Googled triple tail before writing this post.

"Fall Brawl recap" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/27/09

Wilmington based brothers, Mark and Billy Emmart fished aboard their boat, Moon Doggie, in the annual Fall Brawl King Classic hosted this weekend out of the Ocean Isle Fishing Center. 170 fishing teams from all across the southeast entered the event and aspired to win the top prize of over $15,000, but this year the Emmart’s punched their ticket and walked away with the big money. Mother Nature did a pretty good job for the fishermen, providing much lighter than expected winds and seas on Saturday and Sunday. On the other hand, the NOAA weather man did not do a good job at all as predictions of heavy rain and winds were forecast for the weekend. Fortunately for the tournament and its competitors, many teams saw through the forecast and chose to compete; 170 total teams, making the Fall Brawl the fourth largest Kingfish event of the year hosted in the Carolinas. The event offers a Captain’s Choice format which allows teams to choose to compete one out of two days; either Saturday or Sunday. Given the terrible forecast for Saturday, only 17 out of the 170 teams chose to fish Saturday. Randy Spainhour and Buster Gunter aboard the Steel Fishing out of Southport, NC took the early day 1 lead with a 35.25 pound King. They caught their fish early Saturday morning on a live Bluefish while kite fishing at Lighthouse Rocks. Sunday the remainder of the fleet hit the water. Winds had shifted to the north at 10-15 knots which enabled fishermen to fish in near flat calm seas due to the wind blockage from land. Luckily, the majority of bigger Kings were located close to shore, so even the smallest boats were able to compete. The first place winning team of Mark and Billy Emmart chose to fish an area of ledges and hard bottom 6 miles offshore of Bald Head Island on the east side of the Frying Pan Shoals; known as the Fairway ledges. They had put the boat into a downsea drift and at roughly 1:30pm the winning King, a 41 pounder, sky rocketed a medium top-lined Pogy. Billy went to work on the rod while Mark steered the boat toward the fish and 20 minutes later, sunk the gaff into a fish worth just over $17,000 to the brothers. Second place fell to local Holden Beach fishing team Sea Byrd, including Ricky Byrd, Brian Matthews, Danny Matthews, Jenny Matthews and Will Richardson. Their King weighed 38.55 pounds and held the lead up until the final hour. The team caught their King while slow trolling between Yaupon Reef and Ocean Crest pier. The King sky rocketed the propwash Pogy and headed for the hills. Brian Matthews did the angling duties while Ricky drove and Will eventually put the gaff in the fish. Randy Spainhour and team were bumped to third which was their final finishing place. Fourth place fell to local Ocean Isle Beach fishing team of Toby, Andy and Rusty Russ, fishing aboard the Mr. Goodhands. They caught their 32.90 pound King at Lockwood’s Folly inlet on a triple Pogy in the propwash. Fifth place was won by the family fishing team of Frank, Caroline, Horace and Brice Byrum aboard the Wishful Thinking. This team is truly a family team as Horace is the father, Frank and Caroline are husband/wife/mom/dad and Brice is the son. This team caught their 31.35 pound King while fishing 1 mile west of Shallotte inlet. Frank reported that he had not gotten all the lines out when the King hit the medium top line and nearly spooled the reel. Frank angled the fish while Horace drove and Brice gaffed. It was the family’s first ever fishing tournament. The tournament’s top junior angler was Brice Byrum, fishing aboard the Wishful Thinking. Top lady angler was Ginny Matthews aboard the Sea Byrd and top Senior angler was Randy Spainhour aboard the Steel Fishing.
Thanks to all the teams that participated in the event. Also, thanks to sponsors such as Yellowfin boats, Ocean Isle Fishing Center, Sea Tow, JP Russ & Sons, Bell & Bell and Ocean Isle Marina for their support. The event offered fishermen and their families a great atmosphere and opportunity to compete together for big prize money. Oh yes, and the Spot Derby of course took place. This year’s grand champion was six year old Maddi Stevens who teamed up with one awesome Spot to win the round-robin format event and take home top honors. Congratulations to all. See you on the water.

"Locals" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/27/09

If you think vacationing and fishing in South Brunswick County, N.C. is great, try growing up here.  So it is with Daniel Russ who along with friends  chartered the OIFC Carolina Cat to a place on the leader board in this weekend's Fall Brawl.  Daniel, who is a part of the family owned J. P. Russ and Son Grading and Contracting grew up on the Intracoastal Waterway just a stones throw away from the OIFC.  When not working, you can find him bow hunting in Brunswick County or wild hog hunting in Georgia.

His group fished with Captains Chris "OC" Dew and Jeff (Get Busy) Williamson aboard the Carolina Cat.  The group, fishing with pogies hung near shore where they caught their 26th place $1,000 king.

The Russ Charter fished Sunday.  You can tell the weatherman missed the mark by the ocean conditions in the pictures.

"Fall Brawl" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/26/09

The 2009 Fall Brawl is in the books and the records are on their way to the OIFC vault to be kept for future generations.  Once again the weather man helped us out.  NOT!!  He was wrong, but the weather was right.  The conditions may not have been perfect, but they were certainly fishable and far better than predicted.

Regardless, there was a great turnout, some quality fish caught, the usual excitement, fine food and a fantastic time!  Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated even if you just came and enjoyed the weigh ins...you are all important to the success of the tournaments.

The format will only allow 5 pictures at a time.  The 1st three are of the top 3 finishers.  I'll do a few more entries of some random shots I took.  If you see any you like, send me an email at sunset69@atmc.net  with a description and I'll forward them to you.

"Fall Brawl report" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/24/09

Standings after Saturday- 17 out of 170 boats fished:

 STANDINGS AFTER SATURDAY:

1- STEEL FISHING- RANDY SPAINHOUR- 35.25

2- EASY TIMES- CHARLIE WILSON- 22.50

3- FREESTYLE- ROBERT FREE- 20.05

4- 2ND MORTGAGE- MIKE MCDUFFIE- 17.60

5- EAST COAST SPORTS- RANDAL EDENS- 14.65

6- DADDY'S ADDICTION- JEFFREY SRONCE- 14.60

7- EVOLUTION- SCOTT HAMILTON- 14.60

8- REEL WEINER- THEODORE MERCER- 10.55

Word is the leader may have been caught at Lighthouse Rocks.  There were also two of these fish that I know of caught at Lockwood's Folly inlet.  The inlet bite is the best news as this proves there are Kings on the beach.  Regardless of how hard the North wind blows tomorrow, you can fish the inlet mouths in relative calm seas and catch fish.  Pogys were very plentiful today up and down the beach and lots of Blues as well.  The weather man really blew the call as seas were reported at 2-4 feet and very fishable- there was a pretty large southerly swell, so take notice when leaving the inlet in the morning- be careful.  My call is still Shallotte inlet.  Especially after reports of fish at Lockwood today.  Good luck and good fishing- see you at the scales tomorrow.

"Baltimore Fishing Club" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/22/09

The Baltimore Fishing Club has fished with the OIFC the past two days.  This is a group of gentlemen who enjoy themselves by fishing worldwide.  The Club is made up of Joe Fontaine, Ken Cunningham, Arthur "Otts" Nash, Renfro Carter, Joe Cook, Thomas Cooper and "Big Fish" Cal Fleming.

The group fished with Captain Brant yesterday.  They found pogies down by Myrtle Beach and caught kings at the Hammer.  Captain Barrett and Rube also caught kings at the Hammer.  This is an area which should surely be given serious consideration for the Fall Brawl.  However, be reminded that several Fall Brawl winning kings have come from around the Shallotte Inlet sea buoy.

Today, the Baltimore Fishing Club joined Captain Chris Dew and 1st Mate Steele Parks for a day of bottom fishing aboard the Carolina Cat.  They used cigar minnows, pin fish and squid as they landed several grouper, snapper, vermilion snapper, trigger fish, sea bass and AJ's in 85-100 ft of water.  During their day of fighting bottom fish they broke several grouper leaders and snapped two rods.  There was some serious fishing going on with this crew.

Thanks to The Baltimore Fishing Club for choosing the OIFC to fish with and hurry back!

"Rodeo Update" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/22/09

There's been a couple of changes in the OIFC Rodeo in the past couple of days.  Cane Faircloth has taken the lead in the King Division with a 37.6 lb fish he caught on 10-20.  This pushes Neal Loman to 2nd,  Jeff Beck to 3rd and knocks Jay Bucklen off the board.  Tripp Hooks took 2nd in the Spanish Division with a 5.8 lb Spanish he caught on 10-2.  This pushes Austin Aycock to 3rd and knocks Jeff Beck off the board.  Finally, Bryan Aycock weighed a 4.2 lb Sea Bass putting him in 1st place, moving Jimmy Lee Williams to 2nd, and Rube McMullan to 3rd.

That's a fair amount of movement in the course of a couple of weeks after a quiet summer as it relates to the Rodeo.  Fall fishing is in full swing, get in the Rodeo, and if you are be sure to let the Fall Brawl Weigh Master know when you weigh in.

"Fall Brawl report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/21/09

It is absolutely beautiful all this week, but go figure, a front pushes through on Saturday.  The forecast has been changing daily, but this report is actually pretty good and I'd take it any day.  The tournament is on schedule and looking good.

FISHING:  Pogys have gotten pretty tough to get as the beach water temperatures have fallen into the high 60's.  The hot hole area and Myrtle Beach have been good places to get bait this week.  However, we've been catching a ton of Kings this week in dead Cigar Minnows and also, most of the fishing spots have live Cigars to jig as well.  We weighed a 37 pounder from Lighthouse Rocks yesterday and the bite has been red hot at the Shark Hole and Jungle- biggest I've seen from these spots was low 30's.  Look for the 390/390 to be good and I'd say there's a great chance that the ledges off Shallotte inlet might produce the winner- lots of bait in this area.  Stay tuned.

"Fish and Dive" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/20/09

Today, the OIFC landed bottom fish by hook and line as well as by spear gun.  To begin with,  pogies were thick from the Shallotte inlet to the Lockwood Folly Inlet.  The issue is that they have assumed their winter position in 20-25 feet of water.  They will be tough to catch and impossible to get if you don't have a cast net suited for the job.

Captain Chris Dew had a productive charter today and landed several grouper and snapper.

Captains Amy, Brant, Barrett and Chris Eckert went on a diving mission today also.  The seas were a little rough this morning, but flattened by afternoon.  The ocean temperature ran from 72 to 75 degrees and the water was not in the least dirty.  The crew dove in areas of 100 ft deep and 85 ft. deep and were rewarded with several lobsters and a hog nosed snapper.  While in the 85 ft range several kings were seen skying while attacking bonitos..

There were also several radio reports of excellent king catches throughout the area.  You may notice I've not given specific locations.  With the Fall Brawl this weekend, anglers are holding this information close to their chest and have not given me permission to disclose their spots.  Suffice it to say, the kings, just like the bait are here.

"Grouper" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/19/09

The most asked question today at the OIFC was "where's the bait"?  Captain Chris Dew found it......between the Holden Beach Pier and the Lockwood Folly Inlet in about 30 ft of water.  He also found a good deal of Spanish there too.  Then the group from Charlotte, Tony Blanton, Jimmy Lewis, Drew Dickson, Robert Callahan and Rusty Caton headed to water 65 ft. deep.  There they jigged with Shimano Butterfly jigs and pogies.  The result was several groupers including these caught by Drew, Robert, and Rusty in the pictures.

Also on the 16th Captain Barrett caught two grouper weighing 17.6 and 12.9 lbs.

Last, but surely not least...I humbly apologize to Miss Caroline McMullan for misspelling her name in an earlier report...I'll probably do it again, and I hope an apology will work..(lol).

"Now for the Fun Tournaments!" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/18/09

We tournament fishermen and fisherwomen work so hard during the dog days of summer. Sometimes we're lucky and the conditions are nice on any given Saturday but most of the time we are faced with a southwest wind 15-20mph, 3-5ft seas and fish that aren't really in our area in great numbers.  We struggle to locate bait, we slave away all day in the hot sun, and we hope to squeak out a couple bites during a full day of fishing.  Well...it probably isn't quite that bleak, but the point is, times they are a changin'.  It's fall, the weather is here, the bait is here, the fish are here and I wish you were beautiful said Buffett.  Typical fall weather is moderate temperatures and wind from the north.  The great thing about a north wind is that no matter how hard it blows, the ocean will always remain smooth within a few miles of shore due to the land blockage. The other great thing about the fall and the north wind is the massive amounts of bait that is triggered to migrate right along our beaches during this transition season.  And, oh yeah, one more great thing about all this is the opportunistic kingfish isn't missing out on the party.  He'll be patrolling the beaches intercepting the migrating baitfish fattening up for his winter migration.  Not only is he attracted to the beach because of the baitfish, but also because the water is calmer and clearer than it is offshore if a hard north wind is blowing.  Fall is natures way of rewarding the hard working fishermen who battle the many obstacles during summer.  Bait is plentiful, the fish are plentiful, the fish are close, and you can almost always fish in calm water if you choose.  So if you are a tournament fisherman or fisherwoman now is the time to cash in those chips you earned by fishing all summer and come enjoy fishing the way it should always be.

With the tournament season winding down I encourage everyone to join in on the last two events of the year here in the Carolinas.  The first of which is the annual Fall Brawl King Class held at the Ocean Isle Fishing Center next weekend October 23-25th.  Registration is on friday and teams may choose to fish either Saturday or Sunday.  This tournament annually hosts between 150 and 275 boats.  Fishing should continue to be outstanding and the winner almost always comes within a driver of land.

The very last event of the season here in North Carolina is the 2nd Annual OIFC.com King Mackerel Tournament.  This event is planned at a time and place where the biggest kingfish of the year and in the southeast congregate on the East Side of Cape Lookout between Beaufort, NC and Hatteras, NC.  The average fish is around 30lbs with fish over 40lbs common and up to 60lbs possible.  Fishing teams will have a choice with their fishing days.  Between November 7th and November 15th (9 days) teams will choose and declare 2 fishing days.  Registration will be online at www.oifc.com/tournaments and will remain open furing the competition until Friday November 13th at 11:59pm.  Check out the OIFC.com tournaments page for more information on this event including accomodations, prize structure, rules, and additional tournament details.

The air is cooling and the fishing is getting hot.  Come join the fun and camraderie for the last two kingfish events of the season and reward yourself with a great catching experience after a long summer of fishing.

The king bite was on yesterday at the Lighthouse Rock.  Our charter boats were in them  hot and  heavy as was Miss Caroline who took her dad, Brant and uncle Barrett fishing  on Barrett's Yellowfin.  Caroline said her little brother Brayden couldn't go because he didn't have a life jacket that would fit.  Carolyn also reported that she caught two kings on her own!

"It Continues" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/13/09

The King Fest continued with the Carolina Cat.  Captain Chris Burrows and 1st Mate Steele Park served up a buffet for their charter from Raleigh, N.C.  The group consisting of Jim Bos, Kirk Dittmar and Nick Versmissen fished with pin fish and pogies which they caught just off Holden Beach.  The pin fish were the bait of choice for the grouper and AJ's and the pogies for the kings. Most of the kings were caught on the downrigger with a pink Blue Water Candy skirt.

Captain Brant was fishing near the Carolina Cat and landed several kings himself.  He also reported a 40 lb'r caught in their vicinity.  All our boats were fishing in 50 ft of water with pogies caught just off Holden Beach near the water tower.

Captain Jeff Williamson had a full day's guide service aboard the Prokat" Clarat" with Cary Campbell, Bo Tucker, Jim Pressly and Elmer Gaw.  The morning part of the charter had Captain Jeff sweating bullets.  All he could hook up with was sharks.  But come afternoon, Jeff's skills kicked in and he got into the kings so frantically that he thought they were going to eat the bottom of the boat out.  At some times he had triple hook ups.  Jeff and the other OIFC boats were fishing the same areas and stayed in communication...teamwork pays!  Just one of the many reasons to fish with us.

"Inshore Report" | Speckulator - 22' | 10/13/09

It seems that fall has finally begun to set in this week after quite a bit of SW wind recently that was keeping everything warm.  However, this steady north wind should get begin to get the water cooled downed, which will should make the fishing heat up.  Not that the fishing isn't good right now, but it should only continue to get better.  The flounder and trout continue to bite consistently, and the trout fishing should really start to pick up as things cool off. The drum bite is also very good now, with plenty of reds of all sizes out there to be caught, from 16" pups to some 40+" citation class fish.  Without a doubt the best inshore fishing of the year is upon us, so find an excuse to get to the beach and go fishing.

"Join The Crowd" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/12/09

Sunday my family and I joined the gang from the OIFC fishing at the 90's.  Since my 3 yr old granddaughter was going with us and the wind was blowing I decided to call the OIFC to get an up to date sea report.  The OIFC charter captains  generally radio the staff to give us a sea condition and bait report as soon as they can.  Ya'll should feel free to call us for that information if you are going out.  That's what we are there for.

We found our bait just east of the Shallotte inlet in 6 1/2 ft. of water.  One throw of Capt. Brants big net  resulted in a boat load of pogies and a monster red fish which we released healthy.  Check out the picture.  If you are considering going after some drum this is a good the place to check out.  Again, if you want to spend more time fishing and less time getting bait, Brant's pogy nets are a must.  Christmas is just 2 months away and a good cast net would be a great present.  I've included a picture of what 1 throw got us.

We made steam to the 90's, we set our baits and immediately got a strike.  Our first hits were on the downrigger set at 25 ft and....you guess...the Yea Haw fish call !  The rest of the time out there was spent hooking up and watching the other boats gaffing kings.  Which reminds me, a good gaff, the right length is a must.  Courtney hooked up on a the Monster of The 90's.  She fought what ever it was for a good 45 minutes.  Every time she thought she had the upper hand her Speedmaster would again start screaming.  Before we could see what we had been chasing it broke off.  With that, we headed back in.

The Fall Brawl is just 2 weeks away.  You don't want to lose the winning king because you don't have the right equipment or your equipment isn't up to the task.  Check with us so you'll be ready.  Also, the Fall Brawl T-shirt is beautiful.  You can pre order on line via the web store.  If you wait 'til Tournament weekend you may be disappointed.

"Sunday report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/12/09

The Rickenbaugh family joined me aboard the OIFC World Cat for a 1/2 day trip.  We fished Shallotte inlet for Kings for an hour so with no luck.  I spotted birds working offshore of the inlet some 2 miles and we change to Spanish gear and caught several 2-3 pound Spanish.  The winds settled so I made the call to spend the last hour fishing for Kings at the 390's.  We found action quick and stayed hooked up the entire hour, boating 4 Kings and releasing several others- the biggest around 23-25 pounds.  Pogys were plentiful at Shallotte inlet and I think there are Kings there too, the tide was just wrong for us.

DON'T FORGET- Fall Brawl weekend after next- October 23-25 - REGISTER ON LINE or PRINT AND ENTRY FORM or enter at the OIFC on Friday, October 23rd--

"Fathers and Sons Charter" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/11/09

This afternoon dad, David, son Chad Gray, dad Chris, son Mason Muhlsteff, and Rocky and his son Josh Culbertson all from Charlotte, N.C. joined Captain Chris Dew aboard the Carolina Cat for a fishing adventure to the 90's.  The ocean was fairly rough, but no so to make fishing uncomfortable, especially since they caught  a fish box full of kings and tuna.  Chris was using pogies with Blue Water Candy skirts.  The pogies were thick just off the Shallotte inlet.

The Carolina Cat wasn't the only boat catching kings.  Captain Brant, Brian Aycock along with his family, Captain David Hooks as well as my family and me were also raking in the fish.  We caught our pogies with our Captain Brant's Custom Pogy Net in 6 1/2 ft of water just outside the Shallotte Inlet.  Earlier, Brian had caught several kings at the Shallotte Inlet Buoy.  Some other fishermen tried the Old Cape Fear River Buoy and came up empty.  It shows the kings move around, and where  a hot spot was today it may not be tomorrow.

Thanks to the guys for fishing with us, and check out their pictures.

The two boats stuck together and fished the Old River Channel Buoy using pogies they caught off the "High Hill".   They said the pogies floated the net. The crews said the ocean had some swells but was very fishable.  Along with the kings, John Waite landed a 6.60 lb citation spanish mackerel.

"Thursday Fun" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/09/09

Thursday I had the pleasure to work as Captain Chris Burrows' 1st mate as he chartered for Donna, David, Dena Skinner and future Mr. Dena Skinner, Todd Binkley of upstate S.C..

We began the trip looking for bait, which was scarce.   Stephen Hunter (Bounty Hunter-Cape Horn) found it 1st and and hooked us up.  We were working the 460 for spanish, pulling clark spoons on #1 and #2 planers.  While out there we landed spanish and false albacore.

We got word of kings at the Shallotte ocean buoy and proceeded there.  We pulled pogies, but couldn't get a bite.  We saw a couple of kings skying, just not on our rigs.

At least we did get the skunk out of the boat, and had a great time with our charter.  The only thing I can attribute our less than stellar day to was the bananas someone left on the fence post at the top of the dock ramp.  I didn't even touch them, so it wasn't my fault!!

"1st King Trip" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/08/09

The OIFC's newest employee, Steele Park took his mother-in-law, Pam on her 1st king trip this morning aboard their boat the Sea Monkey.  They weathered the"pleasant?" NE winds.  They started at the Youpan Reef, then  moved closer in to be protected from the uncomfortable NE wind.  Between the pier and the sea buoy thay hooked up with a 20 some lb king which Pam fought like a pro.

What disappointed them was they saw a huge, possibly 35-40 lb king sky just before they hooked up.  Steele said the king Pam hooked up with was on a live pogy with a white skirt.

With it seemingly to appear the kings have moved in closer everyone needs to get "ready to Rumble", in the Jungle that is!!!  Congrats Pam and thanks for sharing your achievement.

Steele is the newest employee of the OIFC and has a lot to offer.  Stop by and meet Steele and take advantage of his fishing knowledge.

"OIFC.com King Mackerel Tournament" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/08/09

The 2nd Annual OIFC.com King Mackerel Tournament is coming soon.  The competition will commence on November 7th, 2009 and run through November 15th.  Teams will be able to register online ONLY at www.oifc.com/tournaments beginning Monday October 12th.  Registration will remain open throughout the tournament until Friday November 13th at 11:59pm before the last weekend of fishing.

The purpose of this event is to provide a competitive arena for fishing teams at a time and place where the kingfish bite is at its peak.  From Cape Lookout to Cape Hatteras in early November the kingfish are plentiful and they are LARGE!  Fish from 30 to 50lbs are common and watch out for the ocassional giant bluefin tuna mixed in.  The second idea behind this event is to promote the Ocean Isle Fishing Center's online webstore www.oifc.com/fishingstore.  Capt Barrett, Capt Brant and the OIFC staff hope fishermen will take a few minutes to look around the webstore and give us a chance to earn your business.  There is a plethora of custom products that are a must have for late fall North Carolina king mackerel fishing.  Some of which products will be put on sale beginning Monday the 12th until the tournament.

This is a pick 2 out of 9 day format tournament.  Teams must declare their days of fishing be 6am of the day they will fish by calling the declaration hotline at (910) 253 3474.  The phone system is set up for teams to leave a message declaring their day.  The time of the call will be automatically recorded.  You MUST declare your day in order to weigh a fish on that day.

There are two weigh stations available for this event.  The first weigh station is located at Hatteras Landing Marina in Hatteras.  Billy Webster is the harbor master and will also serve as weigh master.  Billy has been kind enough to put together special accomodation packages and dockage rates for tournament competitors.  I highly encourage anyone fishing this event to make the trip to Hatteras.  The fish are typically very close to the inlet and fishing Hatteras in the late fall is a "cultural experience" everyone needs to experience.  To secure your accomodations and dockage contact Billy direct at (252) 489-0458.  Make sure you let Billy know you are fishing the OIFC.com KMT.  For anyone unsure of navigating to Hatteras contact ME.

The second weigh station is at Town Creek Marina in Beaufort.  Shae Lewis will be the weigh master in Beaufort.  Town Creek has a newly built boat ramp perfect for large center consoles.  They also have plenty of overnight slips, ice and other supplies for kingfish teams.  Call (877) 347 4869 to arrange dockage.

Early entry opens Monday October 12th and remains open until 11:59pm Friday November 6th.  The cost for early entry is $300.  Late entry will remain open during the competition until 11:59pm on Friday November 13th.  Late entry is $350.  There are also two $200 OPTIONAL TWT's available.  There is a big fish TWT and an aggregate TWT.  The winner of the general tournament and the aggregate TWT is the team that posts the largest combined weight of two kingfish, one per day.  The general tournament and the TWT's will payout the top 3 places.  1st- 50%, 2nd- 30% and 3rd- 20%.  This is a 100% payback event less operating expenses.  Operating expenses shall not exceed 10% of entries.  More boats = more payout.  The payout will increase with every additional participant.

Additional information on RULES, REGISTRATION, RESULTS, and other general tournament information is posted on the tournament home site at www.oifc.com/tournaments

They departed at lunchtime.  First they got bait, which was no problem, then headed to the 90's.  Having no luck they moved to the Sherman.  There they saw spanish skying everywhere.  There was also plenty of AJ's,.  So after Hunter and Phillip landed a few 30 or so lb jacks and some spanish they headed back in.  Sounds like a good 1st trip out.  Maybe we have some more anglers coming up!

"Gray Day" | OIFC 2- 27' | 10/06/09

What started off as a gray, foggy, drab day at the OIFC turned out to be alllllright!  First of all Captain Chris Dew showed up for a last minute half day charter. with Charles Wilkinson, a builder from Little River, S.C. and his employee Jose Hernanfaz.

Around noon Kyle Warren of Shallotte, N.C. wanted to know if someone could weigh a flounder he had landed at the wall at the Shallotte River.  The flat fish weighed in as a citation 6.60 lb'r!  Kyle said he was using mullet minnows.  He also said he'd been catching spanish on mullet minnows at the same location.  We appreciate him stopping by so we could weigh his fish.

Shortly thereafter Captain Kyle Hughes (Speckulator), arrived at the docks with a 4.6 and a 3.5 ln flounder Ray Kimpel caught while fishing with his wife Emilie.  They are from Arcadia, Michigan and this is their 2nd charter with Kyle.  They always take the fish they catch and good ole N.C. sweet potatoes back to their home state.

Around 3 pm Captain Chris (OC) Dew and his guys to the OIFC.  With them was a 26.70 lb king Jose caught on the long line as well as three more kings.  They caught the fish in 65 ft of water on Captain Chris' signatureBlue Water Candy skirted king rigs.

What a great way to get out of the dreary day funk!

"nice catch" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/06/09

Report from Michael Herndon- We had a great day on Saturday and caught and released a sailfish, this time we actually had a camera on board. The sailfish was caught by Zach Illing, in the picture is Carson Herndon, and Tanner Junker. (Davie
County) All three boys did a fantastic job getting the sailfish in the boat, taking a few pictures and releasing him. The sailfish was caught at the 390 hole, headed out to the jungle in the afternoon and limited out on Kings all using poagies. Weather was great and seas were awesome.
I will send photos of the 12 kings and 2 spanish. Wow what a day to be on the water.

"Sunday fishing" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/06/09

Took the Allen family fishing on Sunday.  The targeted species was Grouper and I had all ideas we'd limit out early then spend the rest of they day catching Kings.  Either I've forgot how to do it or they just weren't biting, but we worked very hard for only a few Grouper.  The fish we did boat were in 65 feet of water and we added a nice Genuine Red Snapper for a bit of color.  Fortunately the weather was great and the company was good, xcept for a few foul odors, and a good time was had by all.  I will note that it was a full moon and I am officially filing this as my excuse.  I've had recently been diving on a couple of the spots we fished and I know for a fact there are Grouper there.

Also- there is an epic red hot Kingfish bite going on this very minute at Lighthouse Rocks and the Shark Hole -- Pogys thick at Shallotte inlet

"Fishing Grapevine" | OIFC 1- 36' | 10/06/09

It's not really a grapevine because the Fishing Report tries to only report facts.  Over the past few days, including the U. S. Open, there have been plenty of kings landed.  Toby Russ reported catching in the 20's, Joel Foster had many.  Joel's were on naked pogies, some on double of pogy rigs.  Several of the kings were from the area of the shark hole, though I haven't got the scoop on where the others were caught, and with the Rumble In The Jungle on the horizon I doubt I will. Off shore there was a confirmed report of a wahoo in the 80 lb. range.  Don't forget the earlier reports from the weekend of the cobia that were landed.

In shore and near shore the reds are hot.  Brandon Sauls slayed a bunch of them at the Jetties.  I also got confirmed reports of several in the 30 lb range.  One angler said boats were lined up at the Jetties and most all were hooking up.

Donnie Clark, of the Raleigh/Cary area said he caught spanish and blues just off the Jetties.  Donnie was pulling Clark Spoons and using Yo-zuri's.  The king fishermen know the value of blue fish.

Bait is still plentiful off OIB and Holden Beach.  The weather appears to be funky for the next few days, but the way the forecast has been changing perhaps we can get out and do something within a few days!

"Wahoo report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/05/09

Several boats took advantage of a nice day yesterday and ventured out to the blue water.  Here you have Ned Garber with Andrew Sanderson of Harrell's Store, NC with a nice 'hoo they caught on Bob Newell's "Black Dog."  This fish hit a green sea witch/ballyhoo.  Capt. Joe Seegers squared (both father and son have the same name) ran the "Hooked Up" to the Steeples/Blackjack hole yesterday and put a 52 pounder in the box.  He also reported some blackfins and a ton of false albacore.

"Dylan's First Sail" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/05/09

As told by Jim Bowen:

My son Dylan caught his first sail at the Shark hole on Friday during the tournament. Took us a little over an hour to get him in the boat. Also, at the jungle on Saturday, we caught a gag grouper on the outside line, top water on a pogie.. 2 cobia also on top with pogies, a huge black sea bass on the down rigger, and limited out on kings both days most in the mid twenties. We cooked up some mighty good food Sat night… picked up 7 lbs of shrimp at Holden Beach off the shrimp boat and went to bed early!!

**I am told the sailfish swam off without a problem, evidently ready to head back to an exciting day of balling all that bait at the Shark Hole!**
