"Letter From SCDNR Tag Program" | Tiberias - 22' | 10/18/17

Congratulations Angie Sutton! Catching a bull redfish over 40 inches is a feat in itself. Catching one that has been tagged is like hitting the lottery. Check out the info in the letter below that SCDNR sent Angie about her fish. See ya on the water!

"Bucket List" | Tiberias - 22' | 10/18/17

Congratulations to local angler Joe Zurad for checking another species off his bucket list. False Albacore on the fly! False Albarcore have been thick in the 35 feet area which is about 2 miles offshore. Catching them can be tricky, I can't imagine how tough it is on the fly. Awesome fight I am sure! See ya on the water.

"OIFC Updates" | OIFC | 10/09/17

Capt. Brad reports great King Mac action again today -- this time in the Cape Fear Ship Channel.  He guided Greg and Charles York from High Point, NC on the 6hr King Mackerel fishing charter.

The Fall Brawl is this weekend and all indications are pointing at an epic weekend.  Make the plans.  Fish the Fall Brawl.  Visit www.OIFC.com/FBKC for event details and entry

THE OIFC HAS LIVE SHRIMP BACK IN STOCK!  We are trying to keep up with demand as law does not allow for shrimping on the weekend.  We are stocked up now and will try to restock on Friday for the weekend.  Shrimp are $8/dz and get while supplies last at the OIFC.

"US Open - Record Breaking Fishing" | OIFC | 10/08/17

Fishing is the most humbling of sports.  One day you think you are great and have it figured out and the next month you spend hours agonizing on what you are doing wrong and why you are so bad at this.  Then the next big bite comes and you are back on top.  As a wise and experienced fisherman once told me, "We tournament fish becasue the highest highs are just ever so slightly higher than the lowest lows".  However, when you are in a low that comes to question.

I say all this with this past weekend's US Open King Mackerel Tournament in mind.  I can't say this was officially the strongest leaderboard in tournament history, but I've been fishing the event for more than 20 years, and I've never seen a leader board that had 10th place at 38 pounds and 50th place at 30 pounds.  It was impressive.  But then you pick out any 10 teams that fished and 8 of them will tell you it was terrible; they caught little or no fish.  And half of those teams could be high-level experienced teams.  And thus the humbling effect of a fishing tournament.

But, if you can look past the incredibly strong desire to win and analyze the fishing and the weather and the experience, I will admit it was a great weekend of fishing.  It was classic US Open fishing with 200+ boats sitting in the Cape Fear Ship Channel fighting over the same fish.  While the other 300 boats were scattered across 100 miles of coast, catching King Mackerel from water depths of 10' all the way out to 100'. The majority of the bigger fish came from the Cape Fear Ship Channel, East Beach off Bald Head and Topsail Beach area, but there were fish caught all in between.

First place was an impressive 49 pounds caught by the "Keep it Reel" fishing team out of Southport, NC.

And thus all this incredible fishing comes just ahead of the next big Kingfish event- the Fall Brawl King Classic.  The Fall Brawl will be hosted from the OIFC next weekend- October 13-15th.  This is a one day fishing tournament, with registration on October 13th and then teams choose fish either Saturday, October 14th or Sunday, October 15th.  Visit www.OIFC.com/FBKC for information and entry forms or on-line entry.

Pictured below is Caroline and Brayden McMullan with their 34.95 pound, 27th place King Mackerel they caught aboard the Team OIFC boat during the US Open this past weekend.

"Fishing School Change...Oct. 20th and 21st" | Tiberias - 22' | 10/08/17

Due to schedule conflict I have moved my October fishing school to the 20th and 21st of this month. Please sign up early for this school as only three slots are available. Call now 910 575 3474! These schools have tremendously helped anglers over the years improve their confidence, skills and success on the water. Weather permitting this class will have a focus on how to target bull redfish this time of year. If weather does not cooperate we will focus more on the backwaters concentrating on flounder, drum, and trout. Eitherway, lots of information will be given that should give any angler a good jump start on how to approach our fishery. Come on down and lets go fishing. Below are a few pictures from this past week's action. See ya on the water!

"King Fishing at its Finest " | Catch All | 09/29/17

The kings are close to the beach and very very hungry. Pictured below William Hastings, David Colwell and Mathew Colwell joined me yesterday on the OIFC Catch All to venture out and see if we could find a trophy king mackerel. Our biggest was 31 pounds and set a personal record for Matthew. Great job yesterday guys!

The fishing along the beach has been pretty darn good here lately. Redfish and sharks up north towards the river channel and big king mackerel just outside Shallotte Inlet. We wait all year for this fall run. Call 910 575 3474 to book your trip today.

"Playing Hooky" | OIFC | 09/28/17

I can clearly remember growing up and dad would come and snatch Brant and I out of school and we would head east on I20.  This was particularly the case when October came round and Fall fishing hit its stride.  Well full circle to today and after seeing the calm forecast for this morning and hearing of the continued off the charts king mackerel bite going on just outside of Shallotte inlet I kept the family tradition alive and took my oldest daughter Blakely fishing this morning.  On our way to the boat, we had to pass our cousin Brayden getting ready for school so he piled in the truck too.  The deal was we had to be back at school at 11 so the fish needed to bite quick.  It did not disappoint.  Bait was thick right outside the inlet and seas were flat.  We joined about 20 other boats just offshore of Shallotte inlet and enjoyed a steady bite of quality king mackerel.  It wasn't red hot but most boats were catching fish.  Most fish were very good size averaging 20+lbs up to 45lbs.  I even heard of a big cobia being caught.  We accomplished our mission when we captured the 25lber seen below and missed a 30+ that skied about 20 feet in the air.  We washed the slime off the kids and put on different clothes and were back in school by 11.  Got love it when a plan comes together.

"Clark Hammock report" | | 09/25/17

Here are 2 pictures of my father/son fishing trip this past Saturday, 9/23. My son is George Hammock and this was his first Spanish Mackerel. We caught several big ones trolling clark spoons around the Shallotte River buoy. Landed a king as well slow-trolling a cigar minnow in ~45 ft. of water off of Shallotte River channel. We finished off our trip with lunch at the O.I. Fish Company. Take care, Clark Hammock
