"Pagliardi's at it again" | Catch All | 04/22/17

Kevin and Alex Pagliardi have been fishing with us for many years now. Yet from reel screaming action to slower days on the Ocean, their attitudes are always positive. Waiting for the next bite or the next experience with a new fish. Luckily, this past trip on 4/20 I got to take part in Alex’s (pictured below) first experience with a wahoo. Great job guys!

"One way to celebrate 60" | Catch All | 04/22/17

The only thing Mark Wilcox wanted for his 60th birthday was to go offshore fishing. On 4/18 I was lucky enough to take him and his family on an 8-hour trip. Between live bait king mackerel fishing and pulling up jumbo sea bass, the crew went home with a cooler full of fish and stories to tell about Mark’s birthday. All fishing was done in 90 feet. Great job guys!

"Gulf Stream School" | Catch All | 04/11/17

With all the spring break commotion going on this week, I lacked to report on this past weekends Gulf Stream school. On Saturday 4/8 the class spent about two hours learning about our gulf stream fishery on land. We covered quite a bit of info including local hot spots, tying rigs, and analyzing sea surface temperature charts. Then on Sunday we ventured out to an area near the Same Ole Hole to put all the info into play. The entire day the class did a great job rigging baits, managing lines and finding fish. Bites from average size wahoo were consistent yet like anyone new to wahoo fishing, the crew was having a hard time keeping fish hooked. After some angling adjustments we got the right bite and executed when it mattered the most with an 83-pound wahoo coming over the rail. The fish was not only a personal best for the crew but also proved that with a little instruction and experience, big gulf stream dreams can be achieved. Great job crew!

"Spring season is happening" | OIFC | 04/11/17

In the fishing world, history will normaly repeat and so it is that the April Wahoo bite is on with multiple Wahoo bites occurring to most offshore anglers. The key to make the "catch" vs just getting the "bite" is getting a good hookset. That can best be accomplished by having a heavy drag setting on the strike and then relaxing the drag some after the hookup. Heavy means as heavy as your line test can stand without breaking. As April progresses, Mahi will start mixing in with the Wahoo and come May, Wahoo/Mahi and Blackfin Tuna will be on fire. No rocket science with this fishing forecast, just history.

Closer in the Kings are showing around the Tower and at SW ledges. Look for them to begin the move inshore to the 30 mile range soon, and then look for the first {big} kings of the year to show up off Long Beach Pier area the last few days of April and first days of May. Magically when our charter boats start catching Grey Trout at close in reefs, the beach Kings will appear soon thereafter. Again, it's history.

Inshore Trout/Reds and a few Flounder are showing.

Come on down and enjoy this magical time of the year when fishing is at it's absolute best. In the words of famous fishing legend Lentz...May only comes once a year and you don't know how many more Mays you will have.

Top right photo shows a picture of my son and I in the middle (Doug & Daniel Cross). We took your class 2 different times to learn how to fish in the Gulf stream. We learned a ton. I have my own boat and I can't remember the last time I went offshore and didn't come home with a boat load of fish. These guys are professionals at what they do. Great photo and thanks again for teaching us the right way to get it done.... Douglas Cross.

WAIT LIST

If you wanted to fish the Kingfish Cup and you did not make the first 100, PLEASE get on the wait list. It is going to mean something. CLICK HERE to go to the page to join the WAIT LIST.THE WAIT LIST WILL CLOSE 4/16.

** IMPORTANT **

The Kingfish Cup WILL NOT in any way affect your participation in the Jolly Mon or Fall Brawl.  The Jolly Mon and Fall Brawl remain open to the public and registration will go just as it always has, closing the Friday evening prior to Saturday's fishing.  There has been some confusion between the limited entry Kingfish Cup and the Jolly Mon.  The Kingfish Cup is riding as an umbrella across the Jolly Mon, Got'em On, Fall Brawl and Rumble tournaments, but they will not be affected or changed in any way due to this.  These tournaments are open to the public as they always have been- see you at the weigh-in!

JOLLY MON VIP UPDATE

There has been some deep thought going into this year's Jolly Mon VIP.I feel like the format we have used the last two years has run its course, and it is time for something new.We may bring it back in the future, but let's switch it up.One of the big reasons for the VIP was to have an event that was completely different than what we typically see in a Kingfish tournament. It was designed to be more fun and relaxed than the coming weekend's main event. Thus, here's the plan.

The Jolly Mon VIP will be a 3 fish aggregate:1 King Mackerel, 1 Barracuda and 1 Amberjack. The heaviest combined weight of one fish per species will be the winner. You HAVE TO HAVE all three species to be eligible to win the primary prizes. There will be no check-out and the boundaries will be the same as the Jolly Mon.All other rules are the same as the Jolly Mon except:All boats must be in weigh-in line by 3pm.The entry fee will be $210, with the 3 highest aggregate weights winning the primary prize money. There will also be optional TWT's of $105 each for the largest fish of each species, winner-take-all.

Lastly, entry to fish the VIP will be open to anyone; there is no qualification required. In the spirit of fun, let's allow anyone to get out and have a fun day on the water turning these "trash" fish into treasure. The deadline to enter will be when on-line registration closes at 11:59pmon Tuesday, June 13th. Entry will be available on-line or by mail - CLICK HERE - or visit www.OIFC.com
