"Kingfish Classic" | Do Work / OIFC | 02/25/17

The Pre-kickoff Meeting of the Kingfish Classic was held this evening at the OIFC Wing and Fish Company with a large group of anglers in attendance. Captain Brand covered the main points of the Series and answered questions. This looks like it's going to be a huge success. "Bluefin Trip" | Catch All | 02/19/17

Good first day with boat up in Oregon Inlet. One of my favorite things in fishing is to give first-time experiences. Today Jerry Fehlig and son Wade Fehlig finally got to catch their first Bluefin Tuna. Jerry said it has been a 20yr quest foiled by Mother Nature and bad luck; but not this time. Jerry did a great job battling this 87", 395lb Bluefin from start to finish to accomplish the longtime goal. Congratulation and thanks for letting me play a part.

Camdyn Beck had the good fortune to blue fin tuna fish with her dad, Jeff and friends Brian Aycock and Captain Brant Saturday at Wanchese, NC aboard the OIFC's "Catch All" Contender. They didn't catch any bluefin Saturday but did manage a yellowfin for dinner. Below is a picture of a huge bluefin caught Friday. That trip is described in Capt Brant's report,a picture of the yellowfin the crew Saturday caught and a picture of deckhand Camdyn cleaning the "Catch All". There are no free rides in this circus :)

"What a Day!" | | 02/10/17

What a day they had!  Here is a short video from Jeff Lane and Devrin Avant.  They went out on Lane's 2015 Sea Hunt Ultra 196 on Tuesday.  They ended up at the Shark Hole in about 70 ft. and caught their limit in Black Sea Bass, Grunt and Grey Trigger Fish.  They said they reeled in over 200 fish...now that's a workout!!!

Great job Guys!

Our good friend Eddy Jones lost his Mom several days ago. Today he sought the healing peace of the ocean with good friends Corey Bellamy and Wayne Tew. Eddy reported Captan Stan put them on a spot 65 miles out of the Shallotte Inlet. They were blessed with 3 nice wahoo weighing 58,51 and 41 pounds. You and your family are in our prayers Eddy

"Bluefin Report" | Catch All | 01/30/17

I wanted to follow up on yesterday's Bluefin catch. Capt Derek and I decided to head out n the am with the hopes of finding a Bluefin. We crossed the Frying Pan Shoals and set out lines off of Kure Beach, an area that had been producing Bluefin over the past weeks. We quickly noticed as the sun began to rise that there was no bait present and all the birds were flying past us heading offshore. We fished 30 minutes and decided that the area was not "happening" and surmised the birds must be going somewhere. We began running a search pattern, heading offshore then back west and inshore and then back off. My fishing philosophy is that I'd rather fish less time where I know fish are than fish more time with uncertainty. We neared an area 10 miles SW of the Cape Fear River that has produced for me in the past; the Radar buoy area. We saw a dozen or so birds working and decided to set out and give it a shot. After setting up, Derek looked to the north and located the Oasis; a herd of thousands of Gannets circling and diving about a mile away. We made the turn, and as we approached I got that nervous feeling. I knew we were in the spot. We began marking massive piles of Menhaden. I tied on a Sabiki and as I marked the bait I put the boat in neutral while Derek caught Jumbo Pogies. As he was hoisting in the second load, the long top rod sounded off; fish on! There's nothing like a 50 wide screaming off under 20 pounds of drag as if in freespool. Derek suited up in the stand up harness and we began making way to the fish. Derek got the mono topshot on the reel and pushed the drag up to 30 pounds. The water was only 50' deep, so the fish spent most of the time on the top, darting from side to side and treating Derek to a rodeo ride. As the fish tired and settled down, Derek pushed the drag to 40 pounds and leaned back into the harness. I readied the harpoon and darted the fish. It took off but now had a poly ball holding up. The details were all that was left, and now she's on a flight to Japan. The total fight time was 48 minutes and the fish weighed 420ish and measured 94". We set back out and fished the area hard with one more hookup, but the fish pulled the hooks shortly after the initial run. It's been a few years since we've seen Bluefin off Ocean Isle and hopefully this will be a growing trend. But, proof they are out there! Here are a few pics from the adventure.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I stopped the boat twice to jig bait and both times our trolling baits sank to the bottom and we were covered up by big Red Drum; they must be thick under the bait!

"Bluefin at the OIFC" | Catch All | 01/27/17

Capt Brant & Capt Derek landed this monster bluefin about 12 miles off the Shallotte Inlet this afternoon near the 10 mile Boxcar It hit a ballyhoo on a pink and White Sea Witch. Derek fought the tuna about 45 minutes before Capt Brant sunk the harpoon.  They had hooked up a couple of times before getting this one. Brant said the pogies were thick and the birds were working. Congratulations to Captains Brant & Derek. Y'all come try your hand
